I don't know, but I'm fairly certain Clannad can be considered a great anime and it doesn't contain any real fighting and it still handles really tough topics.

Huh. Well, I haven't really watched the anime version all that much as it seems too compressed for me. The Visual Novel goes into much more detail and conveys the emotions much better, but then again, you have to like reading if you want to go through the Visual Novel version.

Opinion time:
I can't get through most anime I try to watch. Soul Eater and some Naruto back in the day were pretty much the only animes I've ever managed to ever actually get in Now whenever I turn something new on everything's just so oddly sexualized, the dialogue just seems to be so all over the place, and social scenarios play out so oddly that I have no incentive to follow along because I always get the feeling that it's just gonna end up with some socially awkward nerd trying to get with some well-endowed chick that's into him for no good reason, but then he always pusses out in some way and it always ends in a nosebleed.

Then stop watching slice of life rom coms.

There are **** tons of genres of anime, what you described is only one subsect.

Here's a list of good animes animes I personally enjoyed that are not just about a guy trying to bang a girl (I should point out most of the time if it's not about romance it's either fantasy or mechs, because otherwise there stories would usually be boring or something already done by non-anime stuff)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: If you don't like Magical Girl animes in the vein of Sailor Moon, don't get put off by the first 3 episodes, trust me, it's not what you'd expect. I am not big into Magical Girl stuff but this is my favourite anime

Dangan Ronpa: Sorta a big brother murder mystery based off some visual novels for playstation, no combat, and the blood is censored to be bright pink but it's pretty cool

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood: there are some relationships but they are certainly not the focus, there's a decent amount of combat IMO but the anime is fairly long (more than just a 13 or so episode series)

Attack on Titan: Again, quite a lot of combat at times, but still some slower paced bits about potential deception and interpersonal stuff etc.

I picked 4 fairly big well known and popular things because they're easier to find and less likely to start fights.

I feel like I shoulda mentioned a mech anime but it's hard to pick.
#185 to #144 - anon (09/11/2013) [-]
That's due to the amount of neckbeard weeaboos who need to stroke their own cock at the same time as to stroke their own ego, thus the ******* of fan service.

Personal opinion, those who feel a need to watch that is beyond pathetic.
User avatar #234 to #144 - snowshark (09/11/2013) [-]
Adding to the mountain of suggestions you'll likely get probably won't be of much use to you but if this does help, I'm glad of it.

Trigun: It's got a very 90s design to it and some silly elements (though none more than one would come to expect in anime) but they work well to offset the astounding quality, compelling characters, dark turns and somewhat unique handling of rarely touched-upon themes.

Coupled with an obviously talented visual team and some great source material to adapt (the anime is better than the manga. Rare but a welcome sight) it is certainly worth the time to digest.

A quick note to you, mind. There were two directors until about half-way through. One pushing for comedy and another for dark, sadistic and twisted. One of them left. It really shows. Enjoy.

Eureka Seven: Since I saw Mecha mentioned I'll throw this gem in there. Most people haven't seen it and that is a shame because it is one of the best anime I've seen. Stunning visuals, strong plot, great mythos and some of the most genuine characters you will find in anime with a TON of memorable moments.

It is quintisential escapist sci-fi anime and it never stops giving you new and interesting things to watch. It would be a crime to miss out on at least trying this series and it's one I fear far too many people are guilty of these days.

Or, you know, blood, psychological games, murder, and a plot that moves every episode (leaving out obviously shows that are skyrocketing over 200 episodes).
I'd argue that sex is sold harder in 'regular tv' shows. On the same level as stupidity is sold. You know, keeping up with the kardashians or whatever putrefied **** is popular now.
User avatar #115 to #56 - Nihatclodra (09/11/2013) [-]
It's too bad the Dangan Ronpa needs about double the amount of episodes they were given... most of the characterization, investigations, trials, etc have been cut out of the anime adaptation, and is generally rushed. It's still entertaining, but the game is so much better the anime can't been seen as anything other than a joke to those who have played it.
User avatar #117 to #115 - mrefox (09/11/2013) [-]
Yeah, but it was the one I could grab off the top of my head. Besides Deathnote, but that's overused.
#120 to #117 - Nihatclodra (09/11/2013) [-]
Fate/Zero would have been a good example (though my picture isn't the best representation of the series... but how could I possibly resist posting it?).
User avatar #171 to #120 - snowshark (09/11/2013) [-]
People seem to forget them but the best examples I can think of are Eureka Seven, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.

Trigun has a lot of elements that people who aren't fans of anime may find to be turn-offs but it is a good demonstration of those elements not being horribly overused/abused whilst highlighting the juxtaposition with intense plot that characterises the best anime out there.

Cowboy Bebop really speaks for itself by this point in time.

Eureka Seven is one of the best anime I've ever seen and I stand by that. At no point does it mess about with elasticated character design, it has a good moral centre and demonstrates how young main characters can be utilised in dynamic and creative ways. It is filled with giant robots, robust visuals, memorable moments and is a good example of what anime does better than every other genre in film. It places great characters inside an intriguing and evolving plot alongside strong, memorable and creative visuals.

Oh, and it is one of the few times when children are written as children. It is traditionally very difficult to write children. Film tends to go the wrong way by making them too cutsey/irritating/serious and anime falls into a lot of those pitfalls too. Eureka Seven is one of the few times when children feel genuinely distinct from adults and they deal with their problems like kids do.

(It also has a bit of corniness to it which is something found across a whole swathe of anime.)

Though I can see why you wanted to mention Fate/Zero. That image is golden.
User avatar #330 to #171 - Nihatclodra (09/11/2013) [-]
There's also Spice and Wolf, Tatami Galaxy, Emma: A Victorian Romance, Beck, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Sword of the Stranger, Perfect Blue, Berserk, Ghost in the Shell, Basilisk, First Squad: The Moment of Truth, House of Five Leaves, Monster, Shigurui: Death Frenzy, Speed Grapher, Tokyo Godfather, and many more.
User avatar #333 to #330 - snowshark (09/11/2013) [-]
I've never been a fan of Spice and Wolf. It is good but romance is rarely enough to get me interested in a plot and there's no mistaking that the biggest focus and strength of the series is the relationship between the leads. Oddly enough I don't mind Gosick which has a similar concept with the heart of the story focussing around the main characters interactions but it had the strength of the sleuth element backing it up.

I'd still not watch it twice, though.

Either way, all good suggestions, except perhaps for Ninja Scroll... which, if I remember correctly is the one with the woman with a snake in her cooch. I can't take that movie seriously. Perfect Blue is the one about the pop-star gone mental, right? It's a good film and I love the use of shared madness, that's so rarely utilised in film. Berserk is always a classic as is Ghost in the Shell. I prefer the remake of Vampire Hunter D to the original though and whilst I've heard good about Beck I've yet to dive into it.
User avatar #475 to #333 - Nihatclodra (09/11/2013) [-]
Spice and wolf is good due to the interactions between the main characters, but that's not limited to romance. and maybe it's just because you're not the slow-paced type.

I also forgot to mention Mushishi.
User avatar #612 to #475 - snowshark (09/11/2013) [-]
That's not it at all. I love law and political matters, I simply dislike shows that revolve around a back-and-forth character dynamic. I've seen them before and I find them to be disappointingly unambitious. I see characters just as strong as those in the genre placed in far more imaginative/inventive/tense situations where the plot is more dynamic.

It just isn't the kind of story that interests me. The same with soaps and most sit-coms.
User avatar #642 to #612 - Nihatclodra (09/11/2013) [-]
Fair enough, I quite enjoy back-and-forth Character Dynamics though.

some more I came up with are: Natsume Yuujinchou, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Kara no Kyoukai, and Usagi Drop.

Not an acurate post. Anime 5 years ago is not much different from now days. In fact the botom picture could easily pass for an anime from 2005 or even older. As far as the 'slice of life' type anime that is popular today. It goes pretty far back. Anime's like Kimagure Orange Road, Touch, and Ranma 1/2 from the 80's. Heck look at Mahou Tsukai Sally was from 47 years ago (1966) and it's the cute girl/slice of life type anime.

Out of everything I've watched recently I would have to say that Aku no Hana is by far the best. That anime was a masterpiece. Not everything that comes out needs to be a masterpiece, Chu2 wasn't a masterpiece, but it was well made and enjoyable and i'm looking forward to the movie and season 2. Any anime is capable of accomplishing that, but so many fall short. They just have massive amounts of fanservice and then air it and people go ape **** over it.
