Or maybe one of his experiments backfired? His mask filter could've gotten broken....

Well, the purpose of WD is to do things most zombie films don't do. Like have the characters establish a civilization. Hence the reason why they don't focus on how this started or why. The whole "Waking up from a coma" thing was the best option to skip straight to the apocalypse.

It also allows fans to create theories that the entire story is just one big coma dream.

Walking Dead comics started in 2003, 28 Days Later came out in 2002. Seems like the writer for the Walking Dead may have been inspired by this movie.... hm..

That first walking dead issue came out in October of 2003. 28 Days Later was released in the States in June of 2003.

So, regardless, 28 Days Later still came out first

The Walking Dead premiered on October 31, 2010, on the cable television channel AMC in the United States. It premiered internationally during the first week of November 2010 on Fox International Channels.

28 Days Later is a 2002 British horror film directed by Danny Boyle. ... The film spawned a 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, a graphic novel titled 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, which expands on the timeline of the outbreak, and a 2009 comic book series 28 Days Later.

Nope. The comic book series did come out a year before The Walking Dead premiered though.
