I like Macklemore, but I find it annoying how everyone is like "HURR DURR MAKLEMOORE BEST RAPPER EVAR" when they just found out about him because of thrift shop and act like they've been listening to him since they were born.

I was on youtube and found macklemore clicking through videos and listened to a few of his songs and it's pretty great, a new style.. fresh compared to the music in this day and age. Shower me in red, I don't care.. thought I would share my opinion.

Everyone finds out about an artist from a particular song, though. Yonkers by Tyler The Creator, Taylor Swift/ Justin Bieber, Drake, Nicki Minaj, all these (except for TTC) mainstream artists have had one hit song to lure in the audience to listen to the rest.

So if you say that an artist is a one-hit wonder, then it's a wonder how they sell so many albums, not just singles

He might be saluting but if he's trying to cover his eyes he's doing a terrible job

I like rappers that just capture what real life is. Macklemore unlike most rappers grew up in suburban Seattle. Macklemore is a skilled rapper but he ain't really my type of rapper. I think a really good rapper is Nas, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, etc. They actually paint an image in your head of what they saw and what they felt.

I hate macklemore so much, and yes, I have listened to his other crappy songs besides thrift shop. Everyone found him from this song, and I live in seattle so hes some kind of hometown god here, but he's awful. I could name 5 seattle rappers who are better off the top of my head that don't get a quarter of the recognition they deserv
User avatar #218 to #214 - ravarshi (06/14/2013) [-]
where in seattle friend? And while i agree seattle considers him an idol now, we did the same **** with Nirvana back in the early 90's and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, granted he's the first big shot "rapper" he'll blow over in a few years once the fandom dies down.
#220 to #218 - robertito (06/14/2013) [-]
nirvana and them actually were consistent and made good songs though, only difference. I actually live in Tacoma but I say Seattle cause people don't know anything in washington except Seattle. Where are you??
User avatar #246 to #220 - ravarshi (06/14/2013) [-]
i live in south seattle, near tukwila. And while i agree with you that they were consistant, (and since somefag thumbed us down for words on a screen) Ray Jr (his actual name) is a cool dude, his dad works in Burien.

I respect him not only because he's from seattle, but like eminem and Tupac, isn't a rapper that's bitches this, money that. his rap is based on emotions and his upbringing. so his music is good, while limited, maybe in a year when he can publish more will he actually be on the same level as they are.
#249 to #246 - robertito (06/14/2013) [-]
he will never be on the same level as eminem, that won't happen. Fags here in washington will keep trying to hype him up, but its not happening. lol. I go to burien a lot. my best friend lives there. lol

lol, that's pretty dope, how old are you? (so i dont feel creepy. being an oldfag myself)

just because you think someone's better than someone doesn't mean they aren;t talented?
#232 to #229 - robertito (06/14/2013) [-]
In my opinion yes? lol. Macklemore has basic, if any rhymes, and his flow is weak.
User avatar #234 to #232 - creepingquincy (06/14/2013) [-]
Well he has decent content, he sounds pretty good to me, I dont really see a reason to hate him but I guess we dont all have the same taste in music after all
#235 to #234 - robertito (06/14/2013) [-]
yeah, though he's also a hypocrite. a couple years ago he was wearing the expensive clothes he raps about not wearing today. IDK, he just bugs me
User avatar #237 to #235 - creepingquincy (06/14/2013) [-]
Well to be fair to him, he gets a LOT of freebies, people give him clothes so he can be seen wearing their brand, its like advertising, plus he doesnt dress to impress
#238 to #237 - robertito (06/14/2013) [-]
This was a long time ago before he blew up lol. Back when his vids had like 100k views and all that crap
User avatar #241 to #238 - creepingquincy (06/14/2013) [-]
Well I guess we all had our phase, anyway he's basically rolling in the money, but I appreciate that he doesn't flaunt it like most mainstream rappers
#242 to #241 - robertito (06/14/2013) [-]
I guess? but I mean flaunt it if you got it. whats the point of being rich if you dont use it? Dying rich isn't any good
User avatar #244 to #242 - creepingquincy (06/14/2013) [-]
as in if he makes a music video I dont see him showing off girls in skimpy suits pouring champagne everywhere and standing by expensive cars if you get me

oh yeah I get it lol idk just me, I think hes an idiot

People are acting like he is the first rapper to do this.

There are so many more that are better than Mackelmore's mediocre rap 'career'.
#149 to #142 - bigrog (06/14/2013) [-]
Album hit number one as soon as it dropped with no major record company backing him. I wouldn't call that mediocre.
#152 to #149 - iloverapingmen (06/14/2013) [-]
>Implying popularity or sales decide quality.

The only reason the album hit number one was because of Thrift Shop, arguably the most noisome and annoying song of the year that got raped by the radio.
#221 to #152 - lazragoon ONLINE (06/14/2013) [-]
Why? Its a cleverly written song with a cool beat, it doesn't have a bad message "Support your local thrift shops/donate/Don't waste **** , people might like it"

You don't like it because you think you're cool to hate things that are popular.
#155 to #152 - Rascal (06/14/2013) [-]
Well, yes, popularity and sales do decide quality. If it weren't quality, it would be neither popular nor sell well. You are the exception in disliking it, not the rule.
User avatar #167 to #155 - iloverapingmen (06/14/2013) [-]
Yeah, then all mainstream artists are musicians of the millennium. You know very well that many good artists are undermined beause they do not appeal to the general tastes of the masses.

Mackelmore is very radio-friendly.
#174 to #167 - Rascal (06/14/2013) [-]
So something that a majority of people consider good isn't good?
Just so we're clear on an objective level, that is the entire basis for something to be good.
You don't like mainstream artists, but most people do. If more people liked these "undermined" artists, they wouldn't be undermined because they'd be good.
User avatar #188 to #174 - iloverapingmen (06/14/2013) [-]
Stop putting words in my mouth. I am not saying very popular musicians are bad, it's just a trend nowadays for generic, unoriginal trashy music to come out and get popular.

And also, it is ignorant to think every great artist is going to get big and every **** artist will not. It happens so much in the music world today.
#162 to #152 - bigrog (06/14/2013) [-]
Same Love, Otherside, Can't Hold Us, and Wings have all also been extremely successful singles. It made it to the top because it was a sweet song. And popularity might not decide but it is definitely a damn good indicator.
User avatar #171 to #162 - iloverapingmen (06/14/2013) [-]
I am not saying Mackelmore is indefinitely bad, I'm just saying he is the only one who got popular promoting these messages. Why? Because his beats and lyrics are very generally appealing.
#179 to #171 - bigrog (06/14/2013) [-]
Isn't being appealing what makes music good. Would anyone listen to tupac is he wasn't appealing to them, would anyone listen to the Beatles if they werent appealing to them. He got popular because he made good music
User avatar #183 to #179 - iloverapingmen (06/14/2013) [-]
No, I'm talking about how generic Mackelmore is. He isn't really introducing anything new into the music world.

I am not saying that every piece if music needs to be revolutionary, I'm just saying I've seen this before, and done better.
#186 to #183 - bigrog (06/14/2013) [-]
ALL MUSIC HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE. There is nothing left that is truly original, all rifs, themes, metaphors, and things to thing about have been about a million times. And i would say he does stand out because he above the rest. The creme always floats to the top. If be were generic he would be playing in some clupb that no one has ever heard of because he couldnt make himself stand out.
