My bornagain christian friend dragged me to church one day and I learned his church preaches that you don't have to be a good person, you just have to believe in Jesus Christ as the son of the one and only true God and you will be absolved of all sins and go to heaven, while the greatest person in the world who spent their entire lives living perfectly and doing no bad will go to hell so long as they are not christian.

That's technically wrong. The best person who lives their life perfectly will go to heaven. The point is that there is no such person.

That's technically wrong.

We're talking about the varying stances of "Omnipotent sky man"

It might have made more sense if I put quotations around "That's technically wrong"

You're pulling a technicality principal in a discussion about the different ways people believe in an all powerful being in the sky

Actually Pope John Paul II said that being gay was natural and not something for Catholics to attack. But he said the Catholic church could never really support gay marriage

This is what the religion is meant to represent. I really like this man.

I'm Christian, not Catholic; but my father was raised by a catholic family, and from what I've ever been told, everyone should be accepted and treated equally.
In my opinion, my path is mine alone, just like everyone else's. I don't enjoy it when other people try to challenge me, and tell me why I'm going the wrong way, so I don't do the same to others. Just because you don't believe in something, doesn't mean you should insult and challenge those that do.
Just let people live their lives, and make their own mistakes.

(.gif kind of fits what I'm saying..?)

I am personally a Christian, but I really don't give a **** what you believe as long as you don't say anything about anyone else's beliefs and just sit there eating your god damn med-pudding.

No where in the Bible does it state you have to believe in God to go to Heaven.

The catholic churches official teaching is in the catechism. This was mass, Mass, it was a celebration, not a publicity stunt, it happens every day. He's not saying anything new, he's just saying that we are all redeemed by Jesus, including atheists.
It is really nothing new, if it was, he'd have to make it very clear that he is speaking from the seat of Peter and our doctrine is going to change.

Now I could be mistaken, but isn't there a difference between denying God and then thinking he doesn't exist?

This is why I, as a Catholic, believe that Atheists can go to heaven.

It may not be a common belief, but finding God hard to believe in and not wanting his forgiveness are two different things.

I bet if you asked an Atheist 'If you had diffinitive proof that God exists, would you want his love?' they'd say yes.

Well, assuming you had proof of God I would think there would be proof of a devil too seeing as this whole thing is about heaven or hell. Couldn't it also be that the devil is trying to create problems to make you reject God's love? I apologize if I misinterpreted what you were getting at. The way I had read your comment was one of those "If God exists why do bad things happen?" types.

We do care about what the Pope thinks about atheists. Because the Pope's opinion can translate to the opinion of many more catholics, who will in turn be more tolerant of us athiests.
