The "Death of the Family" act might have made you believe that (SPOILERS)

During that act, Joker kidnapped Alfred (he wanted him for a plan of his, not because he found out Batman's secret identity) and Bruce was having nightmares due to that. In one particular nightmare Bruce saw Joker as his butler Alfred trying to kill him.

It's part of a story arc called Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?

The entire story is made up of two parts, part on in Batman #686, and Detective Comics #853
