I haven't really read up much on the the civil war lately, but I'm fairly sure the North would of had more foreign backing as well. Not to mention, would not be nearly as susceptible to a revolution as the south, when you oppress people it doesn't lead to a stable country/government.

If their economy continued to depend on it long enough, they wouldn't allow them to immigrate, so it just kinda depends on how the South would've continued on. Not to mention strong ideals like that don't die down easily, so there would've been strong support in the South to keep slavery, purely out of personal beliefs if anything.

Most likely the south would've ditches slaves as soon as mechanized farm equipment became available.

One could argue that they would not let the ex-slaves ascend to any stature in the South, that they would've been made to do other things (Maybe maintaining the machines?) and kept as a working class, where they would've been underpaid and mistreated. As I said, strong ideals don't die down easily, especially ones that deal with race.

You'd be surprised how many southerners were sympathetic to blacks, remember after the war both the north and south treated blacks like ****.

Refer to comment #247

Also, While people may not have owned slaves, many people had racist ideals against African-Americans and had a very low opinion of them. Not everyone though, there were people who lived in the South that risked their lives to help them escape.

Most people everywhere had racist ideals against blacks at the time.

The difference is the political standpoints of the North and South, which is in part why we had the Civil War. In my opinion it was a case of who the people in power were and what they believed. Not entirely of course, but at least partially.

Probably, but the north was a safer place for blacks to be, at least safer than the south. Not to mention from the north they could go up to Canada. Btw, thumbed all your comments for being polite and mature, a refreshing change from most of funnyjunk.

Ok, because if you were African-American, you would still be a slave. Anyhow, I agree with asschwitz.

I agree that that they were just a group of people tired of being told what to do by people who live a completely different life, but unfortunately history will forever label them as the bad guy because of slavery and the fact that the north won.
