An Irish/Germanic heritage, interesting mix.
At that time, she was probably one of the few who did speak it. It's pretty much dead now, sadly, its pretty cool. My brother whos at Uni (or "College") uses it to pick up girls.

No, catholics weren't allowed to own land until the emancipation act. Even at that, the protestants wouldn't sell.
That was always said, catholics made the best of what they had.

Watch a few documentaries, its very interesting, and would inspire you to join the IRA haha (just kidding, that ***** over now.)

Just because it provides utility doesn't mean it's better. I personally think that French sounds awesome, which is part of the reason I took it.

I have a relative that does business in North Africa as well, and knowing French has helped him quite a bit for his field, since many North African countries are French-speaking.

Whether we have the option or not, I fail to see how trying to learn another language will ruin your life. Trust me, here in France the people are the very first to complain about having to learn another language which, in all honesty, is a pity.

I don't think getting to learn another language is a bad thing, I just find it sad we can't choose which language we prioritize. I wished I'd have gotten more English and German, because my English grammar isn't that good, and my German is, aside the pronunciation (West-Flemish is very similar to German), is terrible.

Et le français.. C'est une langue difficile.

For a fellow polyglot, I find it disappointing you call taught languages at school "forced learning". Sure, you might not choose which languages you WANT to learn now but that's what uni's for, personal enlightment! Aren't history, mathematics and biology also just forcefully taught?

Et oui, j'en suis fortement conscient, j'ai dû très rapidement m'adapter du Néerlandais à la langue de Molière!

Very true, yet I never said I hated the concept of forced learning, did I?
We are forced to learn in Belgium. Whether that is a bad or a good thing is something everyone decides on their own.

Although there are some classes I wouldn't have mind not having. I doubt I'll do much with the history of drama in the Netherlands as a foreman..

Not even close, it's just that most of the people who make them use poorly drawn faces as shorthand for "you should now laugh", so most of the content created is **** and gets shot down. Very rarely, one like this shows up which actually seems to use the medium as a means of adding to the story told in it.
