the problem with this is that the 600 poly mesh was probably the original made in blender/3ds/maya while the 6000 poly one was the 600 poly one imported into some sculpting program then sculted and the 60000 poly was just a turbo smoothed version of the 6000. the 60 poly mesh was probably the 600 poly mesh with some half ass reducing technique done to it. The only versions where real effort was put into would be the 600 and the 6000

Ummm you do know that it was done backwards...
Meaning they sculpted it first then lowered the poly count.

the 600 one seems too symmetrical and each polygon seems to deliberate to be an optimization. Also from my experience, it is easier to sculpt from a base mesh you made and imported than from scratch.

I have no idea what you are saying... I cant understand what you are talking about what do you mean optimization? and what are you talking about with the imported base mesh?!

They first made the high quality mesh then they lowered the polly count, down to 600.
And I really cant understand what you mean with the last comment.

I believe the polygon reducing modifier in 3ds Max is called optimize. This works by setting a threshold of the minimum distance between 2 vertices. All vertices closer than the threshold will be collapsed together.

Most 3d models start with a box. The box is then subdivided and the individual faces and vertices are extruded and manipulated to form the desired shape. This technique is referred to as box modeling. Once the mesh is detailed enough that it is ineffective to manipulate the individual vertices, the mesh is exported from a 3d modeling program (3ds/blender/etc) to a 3d sculpting program (zbrush/mudbox/etc) so a high resolution mesh can be made for a normal map to be extracted from.

While you can start with a basic shape and sculpt it a high resolution mesh, you have less control over things like polygon density so it is really ineffective for making models for animation and gaming

I have been using max for over 5 years and I have never done what you are talking about.
I use mudbox to model for the entirety of the project then I import into 3ds max to bake on the textures, or normal mapping. the reason I go with 3d max and not mudbox is the normals turn out better. Then with the texture I put it on the low poly object so i can either render faster or import it to a game.
I model and texture for video games but I dont know anyone in the industry who does it the way that you are talking about.

unless you steal other peoples work (including the default human) and add onto it, I don't see how you could make anything decent solely using mudbox. Please educate me

Modeling is like working with clay... How else would you make things... I dont know what you mean how can I make anything with it...
Thats like saying you cant make any pictures with photoshop unless you have a base picture...
for the last few months I have been doing space ship design, modelling them with mud box then getting my normals then baking them. then importing them to my game engine. And thats if I dont use a third party tool like substance designer.
When I use SD I dont have to make any textures in psd

yes but you only have the primitives so you cant make complex forms without a bunch of unnecessary polygons. Start from a box or even a sphere and try to make something like a person, animal, alien, demon, etc.

you would make a box in max, modify it until it is like a 600 poly mesh that looks nothing like a box, then import it

Tris? HAH! Quads4Life

In all seriousness, I'd take the 600 Tris one and Texture bake the details of the 60000 on to it with Displacement maps, and Normals. Sure, the 6000/60000 ones have more detail, but in terms of optimisation for rendering and game engines, You can get the same result from using Less Tris/Quads. For example, Look at the Gears of War 1 Models, They were literally Blobs in 3D, But with Bump and Normals, they look like the Marcus and Dom we know today.

Tri's Look Gross anyway, All stages of these models would look better in quads.

Can you tell me of a game that compares to LoZ Ocarina of Time? Final Fantasy 5 and 6 are still easily the best RPGs ever. As far as platformers go, they're jokes now. Dynamite Headdy was infinitely better than any modern platformer. The only genres that really improved over time as far as I'm concerned are racing games and fighting games though the formula to Super Smash Bros hasn't really changed since N64 nor the Gran Turismo formula since PS1 so those are both in turn just reboots of their prior offerings that were much more valid on moderately classic consoles.

Yes, FPS games are pretty much al the same game with different areas and guns. None of them have a compelling story which forces people to play them mostly online after they beat the whole campaign in an hour or two and then they're bombarded by twelve year olds who have all apparently ****** their mothers. Battlefield is probably top tier as far as FPS games go but that's kinda like winning first at the special olympics.

Of course Angry Birds is huge, it's both addictive and simple enough for stupid people to play. That doesn't make it any more compelling than any other dumbed down Worms rehash.

Once people wont be able to tell the difference in graphics quality and it will be so much easier to handle developers will have more time (if they aren't EA) to focus on gameplay and storyline, as these will stand out a lot more in future games, I am guessing this should begin in the PS5, Xbox4, Wii3 generation, so the 9th gen.

Yes Im sony fan since when i was 10 with a ps2. People got to get over those old consoles nostalgia. Games today are much better story and gameplay. Compare MGS4 with MGS1. Although World of Warcraft's enjoyability took an exponentially increasing downhill curve since the release of WoTLK (The expansion itself was rather good), It looks much better than other recent MMOs, despite it's lack of polygons. Recent MMOs like Rift have just made everywhere look green and foresty without varying colour or scenery very much at all. With World of Warcraft, every new area had a different theme and you could really feel the new atmosphere it created... I have stopped playing it now though, now that almost every aspect of the game has been completely ******.

This is missing the point of more powerful computers and consoles. Even if adding more polygons doesn't make a character look "that" much better, we can fit more of them on screen at once, along with better A.I., more particle effects, etc. Essentially, we can fit more stuff onto the screen at once and make that stuff behave more realistically.
