Since people seem to be so misinformed, I'm going to post this on every meteor post today. The meteor did not hit the earth which is good, it weighed around 10 tons and was travelling around 30 km/s when it exploded between 30 and 50 km over the Ural mountains. The shockwave broke windows and sent debris and fragments which were responsible for the widespread injuries and damage, including the hole in the ice of a lake which is being posted and that people think was the only result of the meteor.

I'm from Russia, and it did actually hit the ground, because after it exploded, a small chunk of it crashed into a frozen over lake.

That would've been a fragment, not the whole meteor, if the whole meteor had hit the ground you probably wouldn't be commenting right now....
