Just gonna point out that 1) this argument makes no sense, it is non-sequitor, counter definitional, and ad miseracordium - it has many logical fallacies, in other words and 2) those numbers are completely made up. HIndu alone has more than 2000000 gods.

It is interesting, by the way, that someone would discount the existence of such alternative gods (especially a Christian, with the Bible as a framework). The truth is that Christians only worship one god, not only believe in one.

a fact to him? that doesn't make sense a fact is something that has been proven correct not a personal opinion. You were obviously saying that he was making fun of you and that's why you don't like him. Are you sure you know what a fact is? For ***** sake.
#507 to #505 - yunorepost (02/09/2013) [-]
Let me simplify this for you since your mind obviously can't handle it. In his mind it is a fact. While in reality it has not been proven to be one yet.
User avatar #510 to #507 - thebritishguy (02/09/2013) [-]
no, it said that there are over 2700 Gods and it has been proven

He's making fun of Billions of people and ******* on their beliefs. I'm pretty sure that qualifies someone to be a dick.

I know that the world doesn't revolve around you, that isn't relevant at all?! why does it make a difference who's beliefs he is " ******** on" and he has a point that is completely true, I don't care who he offends it is the truth.
#521 to #519 - yunorepost (02/09/2013) [-]
Then you are a dick as well. End of story. If you ever have/had kids I'm going to come tell them santa clause doesn't exist. Same with easter bunny and all others. Oh wait you already would have told them cause you're a DICK.
User avatar #524 to #521 - thebritishguy (02/09/2013) [-]
I wouldn't tell them that Santa Clause will burn and torture them for eternity if they don't love him and I am the dick? I will tell them he doesn't exist when there older if they haven't worked it out for themselves so it doesn't become harmful.

You seem to be throwing out too many stereotypes for each side, while your point has been well considered & understood I feel you stereotype it. Not to mention anyone who uses alot of critical thinking & rationality can't see God in all of this. If for example a scientist's reason for thinking God is involved is because we don't know how it got there or how it started, that's just the God of the gaps argument. Using God to fill spaces our science currently doesn't understand.

just gonna point out how blown my mind is right now

2870 deities were invented, but why? what about human nature and psychology causes us to invent supernatural leaders? is there some sort of human necessity for a divine leader or spirit? what if sometimes people witness something truly unexplainable and immediately attribute it to the existence of a god?

the thought is just mind-blowing really. the fact that 2870 deities were invented throughout the 6,000 years of recorded history, that something causes people to follow things they cannot sense. whether based purely on intuition, or for manipulative reasons, these people follow something they don't understand in hopes they may better themselves, usually through some sort of sacrifice. the way that a "god" or "deit" being supposed within a social groupy can affect the lives of others in such a way that actually proves power in favor of a possibly non-existent being

You also have to consider there are some cultures who have the same gods, but with different names. Same function and everything and even in the case of Greeks and Romans, the same star positions. What amazes me, is that multiple cultures; who more likely than not, didn't knew one another existed, chose the same gods to represent the same functions in society. Even cultures thousands of miles apart such as the Egyptians and Mayans have pyramids dedicated to their gods.

Thats amazing.
User avatar #222 to #168 - kingrayne (02/09/2013) [-]
Not every Greek god stayed the same, and Romans left out some gods and added more.

It's simple, humans need reasons to explain things we can not yet explain, saying a god is responsible is easy. This same need is what drives science

Being agnostic is the same exact ******* thing as being atheist or religious. It's like saying, "well i believe this, but if the other side proved without a shadow of a doubt that they were right, id believe that!" well ******* obviously you would have to if it was proven. anyone would have to believe something else if it was PROVEN.
tl;dr being agnostic is retarded
