Its this double standard that annoys me the heck out. Not being a bible thumper but bible butchers annoy me. All Christians are inconsiderate assholes in these type of atheists mind JUST because we have a belief and we're proud but they can slander it freely because why? I hate the hypocrisy. Why cant we all just not give two ***** about each others beliefs? And when you talk **** about someone else dont get defensive when they do it too.

Again, Im not preaching, Im a christian with MANY atheist friends but the difference is we never talk about it cause it DOESNT MATTER.

Living in alabama I can actually tell you everyone is like that. Some people are quiet about religion, but WAY more people try to shove religion down absolutely everyone's throat. Everywhere else I've been in my life all the religious people I know are great and everybody gets along with each other. If I told anybody here I was atheist I may actually have people hate me for the rest of my life.

A lot of religious people are really great to be around, hell even the pope is probably more tolerant than most southern christians. The amount of hypocrites here that believe absolutely everything the bible says and have no reason is ridiculous. People that talk about the "war on christmas" and hate every other religion because its not theirs.

Not to say that most atheists are complete asses as well. The problem is most atheists assume that all christians are like this, when in reality the people around me are the minority. I'm happy to not give a care about what anybody else believes in but no religious people at my university seem to have the same idea. The internet and my life are pretty much polar opposites.

the main idea for (i suppose almost) every deity is to be some kind of governor which we pay our respects to.

and its not hard to imagine this God, considering the fact we are pretty much gods to our body's cells in the same kind of way..

Wrong. Abrahamic god is pretty unique in it's absolutistic power and interest over individuals. Most deities are metaphore to some principle. Hell, most rulers to some kind of pantheon didn't even create the world, nor are omnipotent.

This kind of close-mindednes is one of the sad things about christians and abrahamic cultures in general. They have hard time considering other points of view.

Yeah, Allah/Yahweh/Jehovaw/God are, from an outside view, all the same guy. But in their own individual religions they are separate deities.

And Jesus was the son of a God father and a human mother, making him a demi-god, e.g. the same thing Hercules was. Only less cool

Just gonna point out that 1) this argument makes no sense, it is non-sequitor, counter definitional, and ad miseracordium - it has many logical fallacies, in other words and 2) those numbers are completely made up. HIndu alone has more than 2000000 gods.

It is interesting, by the way, that someone would discount the existence of such alternative gods (especially a Christian, with the Bible as a framework). The truth is that Christians only worship one god, not only believe in one.

if you're atheist, then why do you give a **** what other people believe? if they're not harming anything, then you have no need to care about it. if you're right, then they're happy and so are you.

I'm an agnostic atheist, and I don't care if you're religious, as long as you don't try to use your religion to interfere with science, education, politics, social progress, etc. etc.

tl;dr who cares?

Well the thing is, it does harm things. A large number of wars throughout history were about religion, and several laws are in place that, despite not being fair or not making sense, are only there because of what that country's main religion is. For example, gay marriage not being legal in various places, and is only just starting to be amended. Personally, I don't give a **** what others believe in. I give a **** when people use what they believe in as a justification to do things, such as killing in "God's" name, which still happens; as well as scaring people into accepting their faith as their own, forcing it on people and basing laws around it. Just because something doesn't harm you personally that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

********. those wars were NOT about religion, they were about land and money. The rulers used religion as a scapegoat, but it was not the reason for anything.

in the US, the 1st amendment prohibits support for or against religion, and the opposition towards gay marriage is not because of religion. again, religion is used as a scapegoat. people who oppose gay marriage (which is stupid. the combination of the 1,138 rights and benefits of marriage and the 14th amendment to the US constitution means opposition to gay marriage is illegal) would oppose gay marriage whether or not they were religious.

also, I said it doesn't matter as long as they're not interfering with the categories I listed.

Without religion it is unlikely that there would be any stigma against gay people. There would be absolutely no reason to dislike gay people at all. There would still be those who would find it weird but no where near as many as there currently are.
Many people are brought up hating gay people simply because they were told by a big book that gay people will go to hell and corrupt man or other nonsense like that.

SO I am to assume that terrorists, the ones who actually go out to do the blowing themselves up thing, are not told that their God wants them to kill themselves in order to kill "infidels", and that they will be rewarded for doing so? And, if you read all of my post instead of only the parts you wanted to see, you would have seen that I said I hate it when people use religion as justification for things. It doesn't matter if it's a "scapegoat" or if the people would oppose it either way, they're still using God and the Bible as justification for not making it legal. I have not seen a single argument against gay marriage that did not include religion. Also, I'm fairly certain Hitler causing the deaths of a million Jewish people was at least partially religion based.

the genocide of the Jewish people, the mentally retarded, the gypsies, etc etc is the CLASSIC example of scapegoatism.

they were murdered because of the economic meltdown of Germany after WWI. The Jews specifically were blamed on the economic disaster, and Hitler used this scapegoatism to gain power in the eyes of the people. this has nothing to do with religion, it's economic and political.

Terrorists are told to do things for religious gain, but the ones in power are doing it for political gain and control, so it's ultimately political, not religious.

the arguments against gay marriage are made due to people's own moral preconceptions which exist independently from their religious background. People have these preconceptions regardless of what their "Church" taught them. homosexuality has been taboo since the 19th century in Europe, and was thought to be a mental disorder, but this has been long since discredited.

true, religious people tend to still find homosexuality immoral, but so do some non-religious people. correlation does not imply causation. bigotry exists independently from religion.

Yes it does, but, and listen carefully to this, they are still using religion as justification. It doesn't matter that people would have found other ways to find things they don't like to be immoral, but that isn't happening. Using religion as justification is happening, and we have to deal with what is happening, not make excuses because of what might have happened. And you are right, religion is often used as a scapegoat, but that is only possible because people use religion as a justification for their actions. If no one did that and just tried to live in harmony instead of fighting because they think someone else is wrong, then no one would be able to use their beliefs against them. They don't have to stop believing in their religion, they just have to stop fighting because of it.

An agnostic atheist is someone who does not believe in a god, but does not claim to no for certain there isn't one. It's the most sensible position, in my opinion, simply because we can't truly KNOW if gods exist, considering we aren't omniscient.
