You should try playin the Dawn of War series first, so you can get accustomed to the story. I recommend Dawn of War vanilla and Dawn of War - Winter Assault for the story, and Dawn of War - Soulstorm for pretty much all the factions in the universe, except for Tyranids.

In the beginning, there was the Emperor. He unified everyone on Earth and created twenty things called "Primarchs", which were his sons. Each of the 20 sons were a different aspect of the Emperor's personality, and were supposed to serve as his generals, but some demonic newfags spread all of his sons throughout a ******** of planets. So the Emperor goes out and tries to find all of his sons. He finds them all, and then goes on this great huge crusade to bring every planet in existence under the dominion of his Empire. The Emperor says "Aight 'lil ******, you got this. Your brother Horus is going to lead you guys in my stead, and y'all are going to do this crusade for me." So they start doing it, conquering planet after planet, and destroying every religious faith they come in contact with, bringing forth the Imperial Truth that there are no gods. They were pretty much going on an atheist version of the Crusades. Well Horus decides that Daddy emperor has abandoned them so he can go become a God, and decides "Hey, that's BS dad, **** your couch", and proceeds to convince as many of his brothers as he can to join him in ousting the Emperor. 9 out of the 18 (I think) of the Primarchs side with Horus, and they go and attack earth, lose, and turn to the influence of these dark, evil ******* called the Chaos gods, who are each Nurgle (God of disease and pestilence), Khorne (Blood God), Slaanesh (God of pleasure) and Tzeentch (God of Change).

well "space marine" is a pretty good fps
if you are more of a real time strategy guy then the dawn of war collections might be for you
dawn war war and all the DLCs has more of a total war theme while dawn of war 2 is based around less but more elite and customizable units

If you want to get into the game, read a little bit of fluff for each race, possibly the intro section on the wikis, and decide which one you like the most.

Then, either buy or pirate the codex of your army and the 6th edition rulebook. Read them both, get a general feel for both the rules and your army's strengths and weaknesses. After that, buy a troops squad of your army of choice and paint it. If you **** up, seal them in a sandwich bag, spray a ******** of Easy Green household cleaner inside and leave overnight. In the morning the paint will come off with a scrubbing from a toothbrush, leaving the model clean and undamaged. In this way you can practice painting.

After you've done that, go to 1d4chan, the /tg/ wiki, and look up the tactica article for your army. This will give you some decent pointers on what to buy next if you want to avoid any pitfalls in your chosen army.

If you need any pointers on painting, drop me a PM and I'll spam you with some good stuff to try out, and what to avoid doing.

If your question pertained to the fluff and lore of 40k, then the best place to start would be to read the Gaunt's Ghosts series and the Commisar Cain series. Both are decent reads, and introduce you into the setting rather well. In general, for good 40k books look for either Aaron Demski Bowden works or stuff by Dan Abnett. The only problem with Dan Abnett is that he pretty much only writes about marines - but what he does write, he writes very well.

For further fluff **** just tool about on the wikis or ask around /tg/ for not-awful books to read. Like I said, any more questions, drop a PM.

Forgot to mention; if you want to get into the games, Space Marine is a solid representation of the universe, along with Dawn of War, Dawn of War; Winter Assault, and Dawn of War; Dark Crusade. Ignore Soulstorm. A combination of ***** voice acting and bad balancing made that game not so great, as well as a relatively dead modding community thanks to them never releasing a modding engine for that expansion. If you feel like it, look into Dawn of War II, although that received mixed reviews partly due to only controlling a small amount of troops, as well as having to be connected to the net all the time to play it.
