Not an athiest or a christian here, but OP's personal opinions aside; the bible was completely okay with slaves and I believe there's actually a bit where it talks about how much they should cost.

Oh look, another atheist quoting the Old Testament. Let me give you a tip: Learn about something you disagree with. Right now you're more ignorant than any average Christian.

Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."
Old Testament is still in play according to Jesus.

While in prison, Paul met a runaway slave, Onesimus, the property of a Christian -- presumably Pheliemon. He sent the slave back to his owner. This action is forbidden in Deuteronomy 23:15-16:

"Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee."

"He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him."

Rather than give the slave sanctuary, Paul returned him to his owner. Paul seems to hint that he would like Pheliemon to give Onesimus his freedom, but does not actually request it. See the Letter to Philemon in the Christian Scriptures.

Luke 12:45-48: "The lord [owner] of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."

Ephesians 6:5-9: "Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him."

Need I go on?
User avatar #71 to #69 - teoberry (02/04/2013) [-]
You conveniently left out 45. If your slave beats the others and gets drunk on your wine, he should be disciplined. simple.

45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk.

Ephesians tells slave owners to treat slaves well.

Paul did want to force Phil to do anything (verse 8), so he sent him back hoping Phil would treat Ones like he would Paul. Does not condone slavery.

Everybody is always bashing slavery, but could you imagine the current world if it never existed? It was(Possibly still is) crucial in our development as a whole.

Slaves built the pyramids
Slaves build the Parthenon
Almost every country on this planet throughout all of history had relied on slaves.
It was necessary at the time.

#66 to #46 - anon (02/04/2013) [-]
and, most people go off of uncle toms cabin for how all slaves worked. i'd say at least 20% of all slaves enjoyed it because they were treated like a family pet, they were given food and shelter they just had to work.

well if I instructed people who follow me to "kill gay people" but only once, I wouldn't be homophobic? it is amplified by the belief that God is all knowing through time and **** that if he would be to say something he would mean it. and also there are loads of stories and commandments were God says to kill gay people and have slaves:

The bible says you can't force a person into slavery. Back then slavery didn't mean what it does in the modern use of the word. Slavery was a lot more like a contract that required the person to work in exchange for something. Most often shelter and food sense money wasn't universally used.
#10 to #6 - anon (02/03/2013) [-]
You're talking about the flavor of slavery that Israelites would use with other Israelites. With foreigners it's completely different.

Here, watch this:

if only you weren't anon so I could reply...
User avatar #7 to #6 - thebritishguy (02/03/2013) [-]
it still says you can beat them with rods, also it says this:
"If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her." - (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT)
#47 to #7 - anon (02/04/2013) [-]
women were seen as only good to marry if they were virgins and women usually were not able to take care of themselves so the best solution was to force the rapist to marry and care for the woman so the woman now has a husband to take care of her plus money the real punishment is to the rapist ,see if they killed the rapist then the woman would be forever unmarried and poor this way a real justice is served
User avatar #49 to #47 - thebritishguy (02/04/2013) [-]
no, the reason that women which have been laid before are worthless is because it says so in the bible, it says if you are not a virgin and get married you should be stoned to death if the bible didn't say that it wouldn't be a problem, also it is in no way perfect justice as a women would have to live with a rapist who is his property for the rest of there life, do you not think they are going to rape, enslave and abuse her for the rest of her life? there is no law that the rapist has to look after the women at all and a rapist who wanted a wife could find a women to rape pay the fine and it would be exactly the same as buying a slave. If you say this is perfect justice you are deluded
User avatar #8 to #7 - Vandeekree (02/03/2013) [-]
Yes, all of that is true.
#3 - anon (02/03/2013) [-]

Atheism does not equate to morality. Followers of that creed have murdered millions, and when it boils down you are no better than the theist you claim are destroying the world. As I have typed this too many sodding times I am linking to my previous threads.

It is a faith like any other. A system of morality defined by those who follow it. Only difference is a lack of a big man upstairs (or big men/women upstairs if you're a polytheist).
User avatar #308 to #294 - Faz (02/05/2013) [-]
Atheism isn't faith its a lack of faith, atheism doesn't have a system of morality, being atheist means nothing more than you do not believe in a God.

Do you know how many ******* times I've heard people say that people are atheists just so that they can get away with doing "evil" **** ? How many times I've heard people say that there would be no morals without God? That their religion is the only source for morals?

It's infuriating. The image isn't saying that atheism equates to morality. It's saying that, according to the Bible, God supports some ****** up **** . How it relates to what I said, well, clearly, religion isn't the only part that is stopping people from doing the ****** up **** because the religion supports some of that ****** up **** . That their religion isn't the only source for morals. That, clearly, we would have some morals without "God".
#17 to #15 - dwarfman (02/03/2013) [-]
Never did I state theism equates to morality either. As I've said before: Men have amazing capacities for evil no matter their faith. (Atheism is a faith as well, doesn't answer everything and is the "best guess" presented to some, not to all)
User avatar #12 to #2 - thebritishguy (02/03/2013) [-]
