As a Christian myself I would just like to add that its The old testament that says that.. we live under the new one.. at any rate.. I think people should do what they want and just get along...
#136 to #134 - WtfStrawberries (02/04/2013) [-]
care to explain the difference between the old testament and the new one? Theyre both apart of the bible yet people feel lik picking and choosing whats right for everyone else :I that's how I see it anyways.
#184 to #136 - Womens Study Major (02/04/2013) [-]
The old testament was prior to Jesus' birth, when there was still a debt to be paid by all humanity. The New Testament was formed after Jesus Christ came and died and repaid all debts of humanity. So you'll see the old testament has more violence and more 'revenge' type writing because there are dues to pay all around, however the new testament is love, acceptance, and forgiveness because there are no dues anymore and we're all forgiven and paid for.
User avatar #164 to #136 - skubasteve (02/04/2013) [-]
What does that have to do with the bible. Every society, regardless of a time period has tried to choose what is right for everyone.

User avatar #166 to #164 - WtfStrawberries (02/04/2013) [-]
Im saying they use THE BIBLE as an excuse to, while only choosing bits and pieces of it to follow themselves. You don't understand what im seeing very well
User avatar #170 to #166 - skubasteve (02/04/2013) [-]
I see exactly what your saying. What i'm trying to do is prove a point. No matter what religion/society/social group there will always be a fringe that take it to an extreme.

This is nothing new. Many Christians follow Christ's teachings while gleaning what they can from the old testament that follows his teachings. Do some miss the message? Of course.

Give me a christian that takes the bible to make himself a better person and thinks for themselves rather than someone that takes it to heart and stones there kids any day.

They think like this:
"It's the OLDER part of the Bible. Let's ignore the parts we don't like, but preach the parts that we do like."
User avatar #165 to #137 - skubasteve (02/04/2013) [-]
Shame on someone thinking for themselves then.

The first slave owner was actually a pope and the concept really didn't fly off till a hundred years later. then slaves became super common
User avatar #86 to #84 - heretofuckshitup (02/04/2013) [-]
also it was a gift, he didn't ask for a slave and i'm sure this slave was treated somewhat better. more like an indentured servant than a slave i believe
#87 to #86 - Womens Study Major (02/04/2013) [-]
Pretty sure people had slaves long before Christianity came about.

Just curious, but why do athiests feel the need to try to prove that religion is just a bunch of lies. All that religion does is give people a set of morals to try to live and better themselves by. I think it's great that people can believe what they want to, but why try to strip others of their beliefs?
User avatar #145 to #74 - konradkurze (02/04/2013) [-]
religion isnt a lie, the judeo-christian system and all its offshoots are lies

the real religions have gods with names. like the norse , greek and egyptian gods

That's funny, because the internet is generally OK with BOTH slavery and gay people.
User avatar #70 - xxsleepxx (02/04/2013) [-]
4 things:
1.) The bible never straightout said "yay slavery" it was arrogance and the interpretation. The "White Man's Burden" sort of, if you will.
2.) Way to go to the Old Testement. Reason why it's called Old.
3.) I'm tired off all these religious posts, mainly from athiests.
4.) From one athiest to another; shut up, no one cares, get over yourself, move on with your life
#262 to #70 - Womens Study Major (02/04/2013) [-]
1) You're basically saying it's arrogance and a misinterpretation without any justification?
2) So, the omnibenevolence of God is inconsistent? Is God not an enlightened being?
3) Biased opinion.
4) Biased opinion.

There is the matter that not most of religious figures stood against slavery, but most of the religious figures stood (and are staying) against homosexuality.
Then again, they are "white men" misinterpreting the holy teachings of god...
#213 to #70 - Womens Study Major (02/04/2013) [-]
Except the part which condemns gays also comes from the "Old" Testament. But that part doesn't get dismissed so easily.

Until Christianity, and indeed all religions stop causing so many people to die for no good reason, I think these should continue.
