A lot of Christians really hate atheists, a few people I know, even friends, have told me that I'd be going to hell and they didn't like me.
My mom would probably disown me if she knew I was an atheist.
We don't have it "hard" I guess, but we're still thought badly of.
User avatar #435 to #428 - jellybob ONLINE (01/31/2013) [-]
Well I personally hold nothing against you or any athiest for their beliefs (or lack thereof). I just disagree with the point this post is making. Compared to the countless religious people who have had to practice in secret under penalty of death over the centuries, the moderate social chastisement that is given to atheists from the obnoxious bottom percent of religious people really isn't that bad. Doesn't make it any more or less right though.
User avatar #442 to #435 - Noah (01/31/2013) [-]
Not all Atheists hate Christians, and vice-versa, but there is also the few who do.
And living in a first world country during these times, any kind of punishment is rare for any religion.
But yeah.

I am an atheist and I am proud... That is simple to say when your life is OK,but when your life is in dangerouds and nothing can help you,you would pray or bealive in some high power to save you !
#433 to #360 - comanderspy (01/31/2013) [-]
you sir have all the right. i disagree with most of religion (except for the part where it says not to be a dick) but when logic and rational thought is of no help, there is no where left to turn other than religion to explain why something is happening. i think that Muslims are so religious mostly because of the fact that they need an explanation for the things that happen around them, and a set of rules so that things can be expected. because of all the wars and **** they go through science and other areas of study cannot explain human behavior as good as religion does
User avatar #377 to #360 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (01/31/2013) [-]
But what if you grow up in an environment where you are never taught about a higher power and never learn of one. What would one do then?

And why be proud of being an atheist? Personally I don't really consider myself anything.
#447 to #377 - comanderspy (01/31/2013) [-]
then you are an atheist if you dont believe in nothing.

i dont really know what would happen to that guy with no religious exposure, i think it depends, if he was brought to a modern world without any religious whatever, then he would be an atheist or man of science. but if not, eventually he would need a way to explain why the sky is blue and night dark. probably ponies?
User avatar #452 to #447 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (01/31/2013) [-]
Actually I am semi religious to such a degree, but it's pure traditionalism more than anything else.

But I don't think that "no religion = man of science"
Man have been without science and religion for a long time before we adapted the oldest tribal beliefs.
User avatar #468 to #452 - comanderspy (02/01/2013) [-]
i dont know, i mean back, and i mean waaaaaay back when humans were in africa, just finished being monkeys, there was absolutely nothing to do. at all. so the only thing left was think, or **** . and you cant **** all day long. eventually you are going to bump with questions like "What the **** is that shiny ball up there? some super cool guy must have put it there." eventually developing into a more personal relationship.
User avatar #475 to #468 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (02/01/2013) [-]
They were probably thinking about getting food. However when humans evolved from small packs and into bigger tribes with some sort of organization and got chiefs and settled down, even if only temporarily, then I believe that religions started. Up until that point, survival was the prime goal.

Also Science and Religion walk hand in hand. Only Feudal Europe and other particular time periods and places that got the right chemistry end up in the *********** that is a scientific halt and complete religious rule where the the main religious body is controlling every aspect of society.
User avatar #499 to #489 - comanderspy (02/01/2013) [-]
that is very sad, because those leaders are not like ghandi, or budda, they really dont give a **** about god, they really care more about the power they have over their people ie* medieval Europe - enlightenment europe

im from a poor country filled with corruption, so i sometimes think of being a dictator and cleaning the **** out of it, not ruining the people's life, just getting rid of the political scum (there is an average of 75 million dollars "lost" every year) but i dont think that when they tell me "you can do anything" i could be able to stay straight, maybe but i dont know. User avatar #518 to #516 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (02/01/2013) [-]
Many people think they would. But unfortunately they probably wouldn't. Even if they once were unfortunate with their place in society.

I don't know about my own path. I know I'd be a dictator. I know I'd spend lots of money on myself, military and infrastructure. But that's what I know. The rest, well I'd have to find out.

As you can see, when I have no one to turn to, no higher power is there for me.
Ergo, There is no higher power.

Also I hate how the pope speaks out about gay relations and sex before marriage - and then he goes and ***** an 8 year old boy.....
User avatar #388 to #368 - mreatslittlekids (01/31/2013) [-]
the pope IMO (not catholic) is a joke. (inb4 raging catholics). no where in the bible does it say the pope has any power. and many people, such as martin luther (leader of protestant ref.) asked this to the church. it's just an attempt by the church which has succeeded in giving "holy right" to one specific person and give the power. It's basically the same as the "Divinity of Kings" thing. The monarch has power because "God wills it". Yeah well I don't see a paragraph in my ******* Bible that says anything of the sort. As far as sex before marriage, there was reason for that back then. It was a much more conservative and male dominated society. Sure the Bible may say that but I believe if it's not lustful then bedding a woman is just fine. If you love your girlfriend but just aren't ready for marriage that's damn well good enough. gays, well that's a diff topic. I don't see how gay christians can work. But I have nothing against gays. I have several gay friends.

Sorry to but in, but you said Atheists "have faith in scientific theories."

By definition, faith means believing in something without certainty and without a large amount of solid evidence. A theory, by definition, is a factually supported reality; having 'faith' in a theory is impossible, because a fact does not rely on somebody's belief or faith in it, but rather just our knowledge of their existence. Facts are facts.

But evolution is a fact, and while it is not a scientific law, neither are many things. Gravity is a theory as well, are you saying you don't believe in gravity? You're not making the distinction between hypothesis and theory properly.

Also, evolution does not even contradict faith. Doesn't it make a spot of sense that a being who has the ability to create the entire universe could create beings that have the ability to adapt to their surroundings in the long-term?
User avatar #394 to #387 - Kaiserlome (01/31/2013) [-]
So its a fundamental disagreement on basic logical axioms? There wouldn't be much point in debating then because we really can't agree if that's the case.

Im atheist I dont try to argue religion with people because its wasting breathe
However there was a girl in my advanced biology class
Unbelievably religious
Always trying to preach to kids about their sins during classes and generally pissing people off
and I try to not be as asshole but one day she pushed me to far

(continuously baiting me by telling me how im wrong, saying I was going to hell, saying that gold will judge you without remorse, Ect ,Ect)
>Be me in the 5th period course
>Religious girl constantly bothering people throughout the year
>Begins to harp on me about how im a sad excuse for a human being
>She finally calls me ignorant (mfw)
>Decide to finally answer her back calling her a hypocritical waste of oxygen
>She stands up and starts yelling at me
>Getting angry Im one of the most level headed and smartest students in my highschool if I would just do the work Said by almost everyone of my teachers
>Call her out on threatening students with hell and gods wrath
>Yell that I dont need the threat of an eternal damnation hanging over my head to be a good person
>Say she shouldnt be preaching to others when she herself has committed most of the sins Including(Gluttony, wrath, envy, lust)
> Say if your such a good little church goer why she has been pregnant twice

She wont even look at me anymore
and I know most of you will probably think me an asshole which I am at times but I am only ever an asshole if they deserve it

Tl;DR
You will find more hypocrites holding a bible to preach at others while they themselves should be reading it

I hate religion, let's not beat around the bush here it's holding us as a society back and it's really astonishing people still make the decision to subscribe to a religion that contradicts proven sciences. Not to mention all the deaths in the name of religion and I'm talking recently, back in late 2012 I was reading about a 16 year old boy who died due to a burst appendix, his parents of course refusing to take him to hospital instead putting their son's life in the hands of prayer. The scary part is that they got away with it.

Then again this was in America if I recall correctly, where "In God we trust" is still printed on the money.

I've never had a need for god, could this be why I don't believe in one? I've never had any great suffering that I couldn't handle on my own and I'm fairly young. I've always held the opinion that if there is a benevolent god, I'd get a calling during a time that I struggle. Which if I'm lucky will be my death bed.
But as of now, I can't bring myself to see all religions as a metaphor to describe human emotion and consciousness. Like a way of talking, which would explain why gods are so often affiliated with powerful emotions like anger and love.

Yep. You know, most people don't even hate other people (like gays) because of their religion, it's just a convenient excuse. I think a lady from the Westboro Baptist Church said it best. "I don't hate them, God hates them." Right.

It does however cloud your views and often cripples people when talking about morality. Religious people can believe in all in the basics of kindness and love and what not but when it comes to complicated moral issues they perform worse more often than atheists do.

i look at life as jesus looked at his, accept everyone. i don't look at everyone the because of personality and such, but i let everyone live their own life, let them do what they want. i don't cloud my judgement with religion like the ten commandment and such because that was written in the pass, if it was written acccording to modern moral code, it would be much more different.

Then you've transcended your religions history and discovered a sound moral philosophy. That's great, but religion more often than not prevents people from doing so.
