You know, when someone is robbed it doesnt always result in a murder. I think more people will fight back against someone with a bat, thus resulting in more violent acts. If i was walking around on the street, knowing everyone could be armed around me, I for one would be alot more tense.

30 deaths in a population of 36 000 000 = 8.5 x 10^-7% of the population
11 493 deaths in a population of 312 000 000 = 3.68 x 10^-5% of the population
Comparably that's 43 times as many firearm homicides per capita in the U.S. than Canada

Switzerland: 0.52 percent of homicides are caused by gun crimes, while everyone there owns one. (Canada's numbers are 0.5)

The huge problem with the USA is the black market, compared to gun laws. You can get a gun off of the black market for $70. Gun laws are very strict in some states (IL); yet still have huge gun crimes. It's similar to trying to outlaw drugs here. (And we all know how that's gone.)

Notice that the graphic compares accidental deaths to gun HOMICIDE.

"In 2009, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 66.9% of all homicides in the United States were perpetrated using a firearm.[5] There were 52,447 deliberate and 23,237 accidental non-fatal gunshot injuries in the United States during 2000.[6] Two-thirds of all gun-related deaths in the United States are suicides. Of the 30,470 firearm-related deaths in the United States in 2010, 19,392 (63.6%) were suicide deaths, and 11,078 (36.4%) homicide deaths"

That's 30K gun deaths and 75K gun injuries annually. If we assume the graphic is for the same year (and that it wasn't just made up NRA ********* which is pretty doubtful) that would make guns almost as deadly as ******* CAR CRASHES. That is absolute madness.

I honestly think you guys (America) have backed yourself into a corner and I see no easy way out. One thing is certain, and that is if no one ever had guns, less crime related death would happen. Not up for debate. But there is no way you guys will give them up now, and the last people to give them up are the ones who seek to hurt people with them, through "Defence" or just crime. Meh, escalation gives me a headache.

Okay people, work this one out. Why would you need a gun? You have no reason, unless for hunting or sport reasons.
In which case you do, why would you need an automatic one? Simple answer, you don't.
Yes, I'm sure you can come up with some figures in you're favour, but nothing lets you kill more people faster than an automatic/semi-automatic weapon. By all means, own a gun, but you only should have it for the right reasons with the right precautions.

Because a baseball bats only use isn't "KILL MURDER KILL".

Since 2010, there have been 29 recorded school shootings in the United States and 1 in Europe. Guess which one of those two places has tighter gun control.

[inb4 one's a country the other's a continent. They're both fairly similar land mass sizes and population]

Isn't Europe a bit upset with their gun laws now though? I read somewhere that there is still conflict... Sides, gun control doesn't help limit illegal acts. Guns will still be here. Criminals will still find a way. I am not being an ass or anything... Just guns are used for sport (IE. Hunting, target hitting, ect)... Just people use them wrong... Like baseball bats... I am not wanting to ensue an argument at all! I just want you to understand that at the moment, Europe is till going through a lot even with the gun law. People still hurt and kill with bats today like guns. Both items used for sport.

Just up right and blaming guns isn't the solution. Maybe controlling who gets a gun better maybe. Like... medical tests to make sure you're healthy enough... I don't know. I just don't enjoy an object being the blame for something a unfit being did...

I hope this is understandable and not going to send someone off on a big mean wall of text.

Except bats original purpose was to kill, people also use it for sport just as guns are used in sport. And guess where nearly all the shootings took place "Gun free zones" US statistics show that when gun control is enacted here more people get robbed, killed, and raped, and when they lax them the numbers drop.

Yes, but nowadays a bat is commonly used in a little known sport known as baseball, which is case you didn't notice is a little more popular than shooting based events.

Also, most events require single shot sporting guns.

So if something is popular we should allow it? Millions hunt and target shoot, by this logic that should be allowed. And no, there are a variety of shooting competitions almost none of which use single shots.

Americans need to realize that making a new law doesn't make it instantly 100% take effect. For big laws like this, banning guns will probably be ineffective for a few years, then will be better in the long run. America is too concerned with right now.

Yes, bats were used to kill, thousands of years ago. We're talking about a thing that was made with a primary use that is for sports.
A guns primary use is to fire a deadly piece of metal to most likely kill, harm or injure.

Except the so called "assault weapons" everyone is talking about banning are primarily sporting rifles, the places that sell them even label them sporting rifles. Also the gun bans lasted 10 plus years, long enough to gather substantial data.

the how come other countries have about the same homocide rate and they dont have guns?
#21 to #17 - ichtus

(01/24/2013) [-]
The answer is quite obvious if you look at the list of countries by intentional homicide rate, for instance on wikipedia. One might notice that all countries with a higher homocide rate than the U.S have a living standard way below the level of the U.S., which implies higher crime rates and hence more homicide victims. If we look at the top ten list of countries by human development index (on which the U.S. scores fourth) we notice that all countries have a way lower homicide rate.

As for the chart: one should be extremely cautious not to compare the orange/green bars with the blue bars. It is not about reducing death, it is about reducing intentional murder (i.e. not the self-inflicted or unintenional ones).

Furthermore, it is commonly accepted that weapons meant for killing make society more dangerous, even if the weapon is originally meant for self-defence.

Lastly, while I happen to agree with a lot of the statements of moderate opponents of increased gun regulation, I am quite positive that a thougtful dialogue about the social effects of widespread gun ownership will eventually lead to less dramatic deaths.

Axes original use was for killing as were bats, ban those too?

I tend to disagree: axes were originally developed for sharpening sticks, which in turn were used as weapons. But that is most certainly not the point. In the eyes of most modern humans, axes are meant for cutting wood or shaping tools. Guns have the image of a murder weapon, no matter how often it is used for sports, and the psychological step from owning a gun to using a gun to harm others (including in self-defense) will consequently be much smaller.
I would very much like to remind you that I am not a proponent of banning guns from society completely. I have no need to deny people access to their preferred sports, but I do think guns are to prevalent in the American society.

Just because some people are ignorant about guns doesn't warrant regulation, and the data shows otherwise as more people use the weapon that people see as a non weapon.
