You know what would be cool?

Converting Mars into a giant spaceship, using its core as an engine. That way, we could get everyone out of the solar system before the Sun went kaboom.
#236 to #230 - casadue (01/20/2013) [-]
"before Sun went kaboom"

Well, I plan to be out of the solar system before it happens.

And I want to take Mars with me.

Mars does not have enough atmosphere or water to support life.
Mars does not have a strong enough gravitational field to hold enough air or water on the surface. they will just evaporate away. It is impossible to transfer that much water on mars. even in thousands of years.

I watched a documentary on that possiblity of life on Mars, and Mars is too light a planet to hold an atmosphere; it was slowly drift further and further apart from mars and would dissipate slowly. It would take constant teraforming to prevent this **** right here.

We're ravaging the earth for its resources, and dumping all the waste that we cant use back onto, and it also cant use it. We're basically parasites. I'de say we're worse than lice because given the time we're killing all other life on Earth, but we're not killing Earth itself as far as i can tell. Point is, nobody is jealous of parasites.
User avatar #69 to #31 - serotonin (01/19/2013) [-]
well it not like those resources were used for anything.
Also parasites come from outside of the host, we were created by the host so at best we are some form of autoimmune disease

On Terraforming: Mercury's too close to the sun. Pluto's too far. Neptune, Uranus, Jupiter, Saturn are gas giants, so no chance there.

Honestly, Venus is a more feasible option than Mars. If you could breakdown all the CO2 in the atmosphere into ozone, you'd have a HUGE Ozone Layer, it wouldn't be a volcanic hellhole and you could get a water cycle and carbon cycle going. Mars's gravity is too weak to hold an atmosphere.

One major problem with Venus though is that the length of day is 243 Earth days and a year on Venus is only 224.7 days, so a day on Venus is longer than its year. No idea how life would adjust to THAT.

User avatar #174 to #129 - samio (01/19/2013) [-]
Mars is feasible as a terraforming candidate. In fact, all the carbon dioxide we're spewing out now could be used to warn up the planet. To alter its gravity would be another matter, as well as the constant threat of solar radiation due to a lack of a magnetic field. However, an ozone layer as well as proper sustaining of atmospheric pressure would render the red planet a suitable habitat for human habitation, although you might need to bring some extra sunscreen, just in case. ;)
