We were talking about this in World lit 2110 today. The prof was talking about how in the rules of theater you are never supposed to mix tragedy and comedy. But I guess rules were meant to be broken.

isn't a comedy just tragedy + time and a resolved ending?

it didn't give me much of a feel, but "The Late Philip J. Fry" is one my all-time favorite episodes

Brace yourself for the feel.
Fry and Leela end up together, when they marry, Scruffy gives them his shares in Planet Express as a wedding gift so they can live more comfortably without worry of their future. However, tragedy will take Leela from Fry before her time. The original planet express crew, save Fry, pass away.
Fry travels back in time to before the year 3000 and takes a job as a janitor, putting all of his wages (except what he needs to get by) towards stock in the small delivery company he works for.
That's why Scruffy is so relaxed all the time. He's been through every moment once before, he came back to spend the rest of his days reliving his life with Leela.

But I thought Scruffy's true love was the mop bucket.

His sanity was the price of reliving his life over and over. Now he no longer remembers his original task, doomed to repeat for a different love each time.

My personal theory on Scruffy. We know next to night, aside from how he never gets worked up when the crew is in danger, and he owns a majority share of Planet Express

Thank you kindly. I'd be really happy if they did a scruffy episode and that ended up being his origin. Then again.. the mystery is part of who he is, you know?

Fry WAS Lars. Fry is also "Fry from 2 iterations of the universe ago, who landed a forwards-only time machine on current universal iteration fry". It's not implausible.

You need to watch it. It's among my all time top 3 favorite shows. It's an excellent mixture of comedy and feels, sometimes along with some social satire. It really is good, I promise.
