that moment where you lose your starter......I'll always miss you mizuno.
#86 to #37 - notafunnyguy (12/30/2012) [-]
i believe one of the rules is you must release your starter immedietly after capturing your first pokemon
#89 to #86 - anon (12/30/2012) [-]
not really, the only 2 rules are only catch the first on every route and if one dies, you have to release it. but you can add other rules
#90 to #89 - notafunnyguy (12/30/2012) [-]

i really want to try this, but what does it mean by area? like each road, town, etc?
User avatar #53 to #36 - jazargo (12/30/2012) [-]
I'm guessing it means like different routes, areas and places to catch pokemon, like when you enter a new place it tells you the name of it. Or i guess when you look on your pokedex for a pokemon it shows what 'areas' it appears in
Hope this helped ^^

yea it did thanks

You forgot my favourite rule:

-nickname all of your pokemon, even if you don't want to.

It creates a bond, one that is so powerful it is as if the pokemon are real and are dieing. I cried when my Fred died. Fred the pidgey I will never forget you. R.I.P. :'(

what if you encounter the same pokemon you just caught in the next area? do you still have to catch it?
User avatar #50 to #28 - hanabro (12/30/2012) [-]
Some people play with a "only one of each type of Pokemon" rule. That way, if you lose your Pidgeot, you can't just grab one of the thirteen other Pidgeys you caught. It makes each pokemon special and unique.
User avatar #59 to #50 - Lintutu (12/30/2012) [-]
what about your starter then? do you release it to begin with or what?
User avatar #152 to #59 - hanabro (12/30/2012) [-]
Your starter is the first pokemon you got in your starting town. So, if I was playing Yellow Version, then Pikachu would be the pokemon I "Caught" in Pallet Town. Towns and Caves count as "Routes" for the sake of this challenge. Also, I sometimes count large dungeons, such as Silph Headquarters being separate from Saffron City, although I might be lynched for saying that.

Another clarification that I've seen, although this is a specific instance, is Mt. Coronet counting as three separate areas; The Inside, The Outside (The Snowy Part), and Spear Pillar. Some people even go so far as to say that any time the random encounters change, you can catch another pokemon. I don't like that rule, because that means you can catch a Gastly on every floor of the tower in Lavender town.
User avatar #32 to #28 - lupislord (12/30/2012) [-]
not have to... *allowed to*

you wont be getting anything else
User avatar #30 to #28 - zedacedia (12/30/2012) [-]
You don't actually have to catch it, but you can't catch anything else in that area, and if you run out of pokemon you lose.
User avatar #33 to #30 - Lintutu (12/30/2012) [-]
ok, so encounter bidoof on route 1-catch it
and then i encounter another bidoof on route 2-don't catch it
i'm not allowed to explore route 2 for a different one? i have to move on to the next?
User avatar #35 to #33 - zedacedia (12/30/2012) [-]
Right. The first pokemon you see is the only one you can catch. No exceptions.

Unless you decide to change the rules. It's your game, after all.

I know the two games our disconnected, but here is a game me and my friends play: In CoD Black Ops 2 zombies, we set two rules:
1. You are only given two chances at the mystery box, and both guns given must be equipped and used.
2. You must upgrade both guns, and if the guns run out of ammo you are allowed to switch for any in-map gun, but no mystery box.
Really interesting to play, sorry if this doesn't interest you but seeing this take on Pokemon reminded me of it.

I have attempted 3 times. Two out of the three times I got my first pokemon from a route where you first get pokeballs, go up against the generic bird pokemon, and it gets a critical and BAM I lose it...

the point is to be stuck with pokemon you would not usually use, and to form stronger bonds by the faint/death rule.

Does rule 1 apply to the first area above Pallet town? You don't have any pok'eballs yet so you can't catch anything.
User avatar #14 to #11 - godtherapist (12/30/2012) [-]
The rule is only in effect once you get pokeballs.
User avatar #43 to #14 - waaw (12/30/2012) [-]
It's actually usually the opposite. If you don't have any pokeballs, then you're ****** and you get nothing from that route.

I figured as much, thanks.

my friend did this once with Pokemon black. lost his starter(snivy) early due to a random crit, and for most of the game was soloing it with audino of all Pokemon. he had that mother trucker take on 12 Pokemon in a row and still won since it turned out that nearly all of the Pokemon he fought were male, meaning attract won him all of his battles.

Audino op!

You could've used a potion.

You could've saved him.
But you didn't. The health was low, and you sacrificed your friend.

And for a what? A badge?
A piece of metal. Is that all your friend is worth?
