What I don't understand is why the fact that he is Atheist is your favorite part. That doesn't affect any of his views and it just caps the whole thing with an anti-religious context.

It's not irony. The whole assumption that atheists are immoral hasn't been accepted by the cultural majority in America for almost 20 years. The majority of our culture is secular now. You can't pretend that the same prejudices that dominated America 20 years ago are still as prevalent. It just doesn't fit the facts.

They don't believe in God, and everybody knows it. Even Christians. They use the pretense of God to justify acting like total douche bags without feeling bad about it. Most Christians hate them too, from Mormons to Southern Baptists. I don't think anybody is really surprised by this, it makes sense. And since it isn't an entirely unexpected situation, it does not qualify as irony.

the fact that he's an atheist means you know he's doing this public service out of the goodness of his heart, by his moral reasoning that he himself has arrived at.

As opposed to any religious person, whose motivations are questionable since they believe doing it will get them into heaven - i.e. selfishness. The reasons behind the action still matter.

this is true good, people. Also proof that you religion doesn't provide you with a set of morals.

"Here's one now"
Yes I'm an atheist, but that isn't why I think you're retarded.

There isn't anything to disagree on me with, OP himself said I had it right when I was telling people that the reason he found it great that this man was an atheist was due to the fact he has grown up in a community of severe indoctrination involving physical and mental abuse, not to mention being surrounded by constant intolerance. Most of this, religious.

OP was referencing the fact that it's great he's atheist because he wasn't pulled into the same group his siblings were and now he is out there supporting groups and speaking out against his previous church.

It has absolutely nothing to do with it being great BECAUSE HE'S ATHEIST and nothing else, there is a ******* reason behind it.

This is why you are ******* stupid, because basic reason eludes you.

"and my favourite part of this whole story - he is an atheist"
You say this as if being Atheist makes you a good person, or a person who's free of hatred, and it makes you, OP, sound like a hater.
And to be honest, it sounds like this guys Atheism is all to "stick it" to his dad, which isn't exactly the right reason.

Kudos to him for his LGBT and child abuse work.

With regard to Belief and Atheism, neither make a person bad, there are hateful people in all religions, and there are hateful Atheists. Being religious doesn't make you hateful, and it doesn't make you more likely to be hateful and neither does being an Atheist.

"...and it doesn't make you more likely to be hateful..." Iagree with everything you said except that quote. Religion can make you more hateful just as it can make you more peaceful. Its about what you lay weight on in the Religion. Don't think that Religion is some form of race that no matter what Religion you have, it won't effect you. Religions carry out a message, wheter it be peaceful or harmful, and judging from what it teaches you and how much you choose to follow that Religion, it can effect you.

Although I do see what you are trying to say, that a Atheist can be just as bad as a Christian and the other way around or that a Christian can be just as good as an Atheist or the other way around, but to say that Religion doesn't have any influence in what kind of person you are, I simply disagree with.

tl;dr Religions can play a role if you are more good or bad, its what you choose to follow in the Religion that matters.

well arent you precious. Tell me atheist, have you ever made any scientific discoveries in your life or did you just go through school science and come to the conclusion that god cant exist.

Because unless you yourself have proved something scientific than you have no more credibility than someone who has read the bible and made a decision based off of that.

most atheists = read science text book = THERE IS NO GOD
most religious people = read (insert important religious scripture here) = MY GOD EXISTS

just saying, half you people on here think your argument is more credible even though you have done nothing to prove your credibility.

People aren't allowed to have a ******* opinion? No idea about the origin of life is even close to being proven. It's human instinct to idolize people that share the ideas you do.

People are free to be atheist regardless of whether they have any scientific proof. Go away idiot

Albeit I'm an Atheist, i agree with this statement a hundred percent. I just choose to believe there isn't a all knowing all powerful being, call me ignorant, call me stupid. But it's just what i choose to believe. just like, implying here, if you are religious you choose to have your faith. and i respect that as well.

No one can prove there is no "god". But are you willing to say that something that was said thousands of years ago and has no solid, hard proof, and that contradicts itself all the time, is actually reasonable and worth putting your entire soul and faith into?

This is why I'm agnostic.

But, your post has nothing to do with why OP thinks him being atheist is awesome.

It's because he is atheist, and related to the most hateful, radical Christians/Baptist/Whatevers to ever exist.

By your logic. for you to be religious, you have to have helped write the bible.

Very cute, however I believe he was saying "and the best part" in relation to the family he came from. Considering the entire family was indoctrinated in the highest degree to believe in religion (and the extraordinary amount of intolerance his family attached to it) and yet he came out a skeptic and a tolerance activist.

To the rest of your comment:

"Tell me atheist, have you ever made any scientific discoveries in your life or did you just go through school science and come to the conclusion that god cant exist. "

You don't have to make a scientific discovery, and you don't need any profound understanding of science to refute the existence of god. If the side making the claim cannot produce the evidence, then we do not believe the claim. It's a very simple process humans follow for everything because we aren't omniscient.

"Because unless you yourself have proved something scientific than you have no more credibility than someone who has read the bible and made a decision based off of that.
"

He doesn't need credibility when refuting a claim, someone who reads the bible and says it proves god exists when it doesn't is wrong. You don't need a mathematician in the classroom for one 1st grader to tell another 2+2 doesn't equal 3.

"most atheists = read science text book = THERE IS NO GOD
most religious people = read (insert important religious scripture here) = MY GOD EXISTS "

No it's more like

Religious person= Read holy scripture= My god exists.
Most atheists= That's wrong.= Your claim of god is wrong.
