To deal with stupidity like this you must baffle the stupid people. My favorite way is to tell them that i'm and atheist and that the "Christmas tree" is a Pagan traditions that was stolen by the Christian church. This usually gives me enough time to get away before they can figure out what I just said.
#68 - freddyhollensen (12/10/2012) [-]
Newsflash... only American atheists got a problem with Christmas Trees.

in addition, it's not even originally a christian tradition, it's a pagan one, Americans celebrate it because of immigrants from Germany / Scandinavia.

I'm an anti-theist, I actively proclaim that not only do I not believe in anything but science, but also that religion is bad for the world. But even I like Christmas trees, have a lamp of the north star, and like the gold angel my mother usually puts on top of our Christmas tree -> in our completely atheist family.

My girlfriend is catholic though, she hates Christmas decorations.

I have never met an atheist here in Denmark who thought Christmas trees should be banned because they were promoting religious ideas. And 80% of... well everyone, says they haven't got a faith.

I'm American and I really don't give a **** about Christmas trees, Menorahs, or whatever type of religious expression. I share your view in the sense that I also only believe in science and that religion is bad for the world, but I prefer to not go by "anti-theist" because I believe that sounds a little pretentious, but that's just me.

"I'm an anti-theist, I actively proclaim that not only do I not believe in anything but science, but also that religion is bad for the world"

Surely seeing this post should open your eyes that it's not religion that is bad for the world, but the people who follow it, or more specifically, a minority of people who follow it. I could just as easily say that atheists are ruining the world by oppressing people who dare have symbols in their homes/person that represent their religious beliefs, but that would be ignorant because it's a small minority of atheists who do that. However, the idiots speak the loudest, so that's why the crazy ideas these people come up with are often allowed to influence the whole world.
User avatar #324 to #100 - freddyhollensen (12/10/2012) [-]
I try not to hate people, but I don't think religion is more safe from debate than political views... The reason I don't like religion is because I think all of it is flat out untrue, and people would be better off living a life led by reason, scientific understanding and having to think about moral and ethics from a secular perspective.

I do understand the whole, westboro baptist church are ruining it for us, but that's generally not what I'm after, I respecting people also comes from treating them the way you'd like to be treated, and if I said something that was wrong, like embryos got souls, I'd kinda like to know it.

A lot of people don't ''believe'' in evolution (Like it's something you can choose to believe in) This though, is a problem caused by religion, on nice, normal religious people. And I think they deserve to be told that the church is wrong and the scientist is right.

I've never heard of anyone in America who thinks Christmas trees should be banned, but there have been controversies about nativity scenes and other Christmas symbols being displayed on public property.
User avatar #71 to #69 - freddyhollensen (12/10/2012) [-]
But in Denmark, a lot of public money is spent of Christmas decorations, and nobody here complains about it.

It's somewhat of a secular tradition as it is a christian one, not long ago, I talked to my Muslim friend and my Buddhist friend, both of em were talking about Christmas presents.
User avatar #74 to #71 - Ruspanic (12/10/2012) [-]
Yeah, Christmas has become far more secular and commercialized in the US as well. Public money is also spent on Christmas trees and other such decorations in public places, but not on more overtly religious displays like nativity scenes. Most people I know, including Jews and atheists celebrate Christmas in some way.

My family is actually one of the exceptions. We're Russian and secular, so we observe many of the secular Christmas traditions on New Year's Day instead (decorated tree, presents, Santa-Claus-equivalent, etc). In Russia Christmas is a strictly religious holiday.
User avatar #86 to #71 - katjapls (12/10/2012) [-]
That's not true. Some of the immagrants in Denmark are complaining about Christmas, and want people to take down their christmas tree. They also want to remove christmas songs like (et barn er født i Betlehem) . But yeah it's not everyone who does it.
User avatar #325 to #86 - freddyhollensen (12/10/2012) [-]
True, but that would be those 10-15 muslims or whatever, I saw it in the news as well... For some reason, I don't really share their pain enough to really care if they are mad.

Newflash... You're wrong. No atheist, not any sane one at least, in America has a real problem with Christmas trees, including me. If it's in a public place (town hall, court house, etc.) and no other religious decorations are allowed (menorahs for example) then **** yeah I want it taken down, but otherwise, no one gives a **** . The whole "happy holidays" thing that atheists pull if retarded as well. "Hurrrr I'm atheist I can't say 'Merry Christmas' people should say 'Happy Holidays' instead Durrrrr" really pisses me off.

User avatar #99 to #95 - simplygabriele (12/10/2012) [-]
I say happy holidays because there's a ******** of different celebrations in pretty much one week. I'm an atheist and I don't care, people can wish me happy Christmas, happy Hanukkah, happy glory-to-the-hypnotoad day... From what I've seen it's Christians who bug innocent cashiers at Target cause they wished them happy holidays and did not scream out "ALL HAIL JEEBUS!" like they'd prefer.

Sure, it's a minority, but a minority that for some reason gets a lot of media coverage (cue O'Reilly with his yearly "Them gays and libs want to cross out Jesus out of Cristmas! It's all in their communist agenda - abortions, tax raises and NOT forcing kids to act in a nativity plays! SACRILEGE!").

Fact: Christmas trees were first used by peasants as an offering to Santa Claus in the hopes he would not kidnap their children to be used as elf laborers.

So, no cross necklaces. No Star of David tattoos (I've seen a lot). People just need to suck it up and deal. Most stores can't even say "Merry Christmas" because people get offended, so I make a point to say it to the customers that come into my work. Should we outlaw Independence Day, because it might offend people? Valentine's Day offends single people. Halloween offends people. Thanksgiving. Veteran's Day. Hell, I'm pretty sure people could get offended by Mother's Day. I will not be politically correct with what I say or do because I might offend someone. If you don't like a holiday, don't celebrate it. It's not that hard.

The idea of having decorating evergreens started by celebrating the continuing of life through the winter because evergreens don't drop their leaves. This eventually turned into the Christmas tree.

or something like that
