Religion is like KNOWING there is a black cat in a fully lit room, despite the fact that all evidence says there isn't...

Philosophy is the basis for science. Critical thinking arises from philosophy. The scientist can find nothing to be true if he doesn't have the logic and reason to make necessary connections. The scientific method is entirely centered on the philosophical idea that our reason is sure, we can make observations of the world, and we can combine the two to know how the world works through science.
Furthermore, science may only deal with empirical data. Philosophy deals with everything abstract which is extremely useful. For instance, you can't test if your world even exists or not. That is something for philosophers to figure out.
Also, theology makes no claims about the real world but only their respected religion. Theologians really do find the "cat," is just that the cat exists in their scriptural and traditional reality instead of the rest of the worlds.

Wouldn't philosophy be sitting on the street corner in a box because you have no job?

I love how people in FJ try so hard to seem inteligent. Like they are indeed people involved in science and other kind of people are retards. This site indeed HAS become ****

Well... no. Philosophy would be looking for a black cat by applying rigorous logic to the situation, to reach a conclusion based on long analysis and consideration. Science is the same, but with a focus on saying 'well typically in the past we have found black cats have a tendency to [...]' and trying the same to add to a growing body of data.

I guess that a difference could be put also like that: Philosophy would look for the black cat for the sake of finding and petting him. Science would put the cat to catching mice.

science would be looking for something like cat **** to imply that there is indeed a cat there and assuming it is black due to your trouble seeing it

Ok, philosophy uses mechanisms that are similar to science. Both start with an idea, proceed to define the idea, think about the idea, and propose either a test or a method of observing that would lead to the testing of the ideas properties. Philosophy preceded "science" in that science is more based on quantifying data and uses logic to explore new concepts. So its wrong to say, given this analogy, that philosophers are using nothing to find the black cat. I would suggest that they are using a dimmer flashlight because it doesn't have the strength of the quantifiable information. Also **** you for making me feel this was necessary.

That's not fair, the black science cat uses a flashlight, making it way to easy for scientists to find him!
