Okay, so racist jokes are okay. Sexism is funny. Religion is made fun of constantly, but the minute you say anything about metric measurements, **** gets real.

Lol the real speed that a major of the world measures in is up there. Americans just have to be different in everyway.

The British drive on the left while the vast majority of countries drive on the right, so the USA isn't the only one who likes to be different

being american it actually pisses me off, the conversions are so random 12 inches then 5280 feet? id be glad to use the metric system like i do in physics. things are much simpler when its all base 10
User avatar #262 to #115 - infamoustrapper (11/26/2012) [-]
i dont see how an american, after using the imperial system his or her whole life can hate it. sure it may not be as simple for math, but for understanding distances and how far away places are, it isnt bad....which is what feet, miles, and inches do anyway. who cares about how it is slightly harder to do math with
User avatar #199 to #115 - hiddenshaddow (11/26/2012) [-]
Even this american wants to be a Canadian. :P we got bacon
User avatar #81 to #77 - hiddenshaddow (11/26/2012) [-]
Ya ok I'll give you that one but what about measurments? Almost the whole world as gone to centimetres meters and kilometres while america still uses inches feet and miles.
#128 to #81 - mrbrianlolz (11/26/2012) [-]
We started using the Imperial system when the UK told us to start using it, I suppose we just never left it.

i wonder what all the fuss is about. it's quite common to drive fast over here.
it isn't even dangerous. in order to acquire a diving licence everyone has to take at least 12 driving lessons (at least 4 of which have to be taken on an autobahn) and pass a rather difficult driving test, not that american joke one. every german car has to pass a very strict examination every 2 years to make sure it can be operated safely at maximum velocity. fewer people die on german autobahns than on almost any other kind of road, anywhere in the world.

That's 155.35 mph.

we should totally build an autobhan in north america.
User avatar #31 to #3 - nass (11/25/2012) [-]
The concept wouldn't work in the US. In Germany you're only allowed to overtake from the left side, slower cars and trucks drive right, depending on the number of lanes, mid ist mostly the "average" with 120-130 kp/h and left lane is for having fun/being late for work. I'm not sure if this would work out if everbody overtakes from the right and left side.
#30 to #3 - mclaughlinar (11/25/2012) [-]
Until 1999 a lot of Montana highways had a speed limit of "reasonable and proper" or something like that, but no real limit.

In Texas we recently raised some empty patches of highway to 85 which is pretty fun...
User avatar #22 to #3 - theguythatisnotyou (11/25/2012) [-]
If I remember this correctly there is straightaway in Colorado that stretches about 70 miles, and people pretty much max out speed going own that. I could be wrong though. I'm simply remembering what my 4th grade teacher told me.
User avatar #24 to #22 - themastertroller (11/25/2012) [-]
how long is the autobahn?
#36 to #24 - genasi (11/25/2012) [-]
it's not a single road, it's the network of highways in germany. so it's several thousand miles "long"
User avatar #11 to #3 - blaxfire (11/25/2012) [-]
People can barely handle a simple round-about I dont think they would be able to handle a stretch of road pushing their car to the max.

its really exhausting to drive for 5 hours at full speed.

But yes its really fast :) and dangerous

because in germany are a lot of idiots too driving to slow on the left side when you come from behind ****

supposedly the autobahn has no speed limit, this is not true; i think the top limit is like 90 mph, however there are sections that are not patrolled with no cameras

over half the autobahn does indeed have no speed limit whatsoever, only a "recommended speed". You don't get fined when going over it, even if you directly overtake a cop car.

The rest has either a constant limit of around 80, or a shifting limit depending on weather and traffic.
User avatar #40 to #5 - symustafa (11/25/2012) [-]
Yeah, the speed limit changes depending on the situation on the autobahn like accidents or the weather. Plus some parts do have speed limits that don't change. The usual limit if there is one is 120 km/h.
#4 to #2 - paulol (11/25/2012) [-]
Well, the recommended speed is ~80mph, but in sections without explicit speed limit, you can go as fast as you want to. :)
#13 to #4 - Rascal (11/25/2012) [-]
:> i live in germany

but gas is so expensive here :( its not cheap to drive 160 for a long time

and those slow idiots only driving 80 on the right side :E I hate to brake down

User avatar #27 to #13 - xxxdemongirl (11/25/2012) [-]
if you are speaking in km, yes 80 is slow, but if you are talking 80 mph, in America, people here actually will honk at you passing them when you go that fast. It's depressing
