No, its a slightly slanted table -or camera - with levels.

Fun thing to do, grab a spoon thats slightly longer than the diameter of a bowl. Place the spoon in front of the bowl in front of you and then place it a bit behind the bowl in front of you. Notice in the former it looks "bigger" than the latter, where you can get it so you can't see it. It's called perspective.

Now take that spoon shove it down your throat and never breed.

when one is higher or lower he is making it so the left edge goes along one line, rather than having it right above it, so b will end up going farther than a to the left, or not as far, which changes how far b extends to the right as compared to a

Figured it out and tested it. They appear different sizes because of the angle at the edge of the shape. Because he is placing the paper an inch or so away from where he places it at the top it appears to be longer. Either that or it's because the top edge is longer due to the curve.
