Presidents rarely do anything major or controversial in their first term so they get re-elected for a second. This is where the shit goes down!

Candidate Popular vote Percentage Electoral votes (270 to win)
Barack Obama 60664801 50% 303
Mitt Romney 57823653 48% 206

Romney did not win the popular vote but it was close, and he lost the electoral vote by a lot more than 60. And obama would would have 330 vote if they counted in florida which was not counted in because obama went over 270 before they were finished counting the votes in florida.

Can someone please explain to me how American National suffrage works? I heard its not based on the number of people voting, but on the number of district so it reallsy is confusing.

Each state is allotted a number of representatives based on its population, as well as two for the senate. These representatives and senators make up the Electoral College, which is what we use for our voting system.

Each state has its popular vote, and the majority vote determines which candidate the representatives will vote for. They don't always follow the rule, but usually so.

The issue here is this:

Let's say every state that voted for Candidate A had a 90% majority, meaning nearly everyone in those states voted for him.

Then every state that voted for Candidate B only barely won, having a 55% majority.

If this occurs, it can very well be that Candidate A has many more popular votes, but significantly loses the election due to the electoral college.
