I'm an only child, so my parents bought me a dog when I was around four. Named her Taco, because I was a stupid kid. We were best friends through everything, she slept on my bed, would bring me rocks and pieces of wood to help me build my "clubhouse," and would refuse to leave my side during our endless vacations. School started, and she would follow the bus all the way to the school and wait outside the fence for me; my teachers used to give her their leftovers and always laughed, calling her my guardian angel.
Every night she was there to be a best friend, from my childhood to high school. Never faltered.
Cut to me being 18. Taco has dementia, daily seizures, and can't even walk straight. I know what has to be done. I take her, alone, to the vet and place her on the table. For the first time in months she shows signs of stability and recognition, and looks directly into my eyes and gives me her paw as they inject her. Body goes limp, eyes never leave mine as they close. She came back in the last minutes of her life to say goodbye, to say that she loves me.
I cried all the way home, dug her grave (took me a bit of time, the shovel was likely bigger than me), and wrapped her in the comforter set I had on my bed when I was a kid and she slept with me.
Kept waiting for her to wake up.
Dreamt for weeks that she came back to life, and was trapped under all that dirt, and would make it halfway down the hill to her grave before realizing she wasn't coming back.
Still can't keep pictures of her around yet without tearing up... you can never have a best friend like the friend you have in your dog.
Long post is long, sorry :/

I had a cat when I was 15, her name was Opal, and she was a tiny little Siamese that we were fostering. She had cancer, and had come from an awful home; an actual crazy cat lady who didn't care for the 15 odd cats in her 1 bedroom apartment.
My mum was busy with our other animals (at the time we had 3 cats, 3 dogs, 2 horses and a parrot), and my da didn't particularly like cats. But I loved that little kitty. She stayed in the little basement living room where I could play video games and watch tv without disturbing my parents. The second I came down the stairs she would race to my feet and pester me until I picked her up and cuddled her. She would lay in my lap the entire time I was in the basement, purring away, happy to be with me, and I with her.
One day, while online, I reached down to pet her while a video buffered, and noticed she was cold. She had died on my lap, cuddled up to me, and looking content.
We only had her for maybe 6 months, and I've had many animals through my life, but my little Opal has always stuck with my heart, so happy that I gave her a loving home after the terrible one she had before.

Pic somewhat related, another cat that I lost just recently to old age.
