Except hotel cleaners aren't paid to pick up your stuff, they're paid to vacuum, change the sheets and towels and dust surfaces. Everything else isn't their concern.

I saw a few comments about tips so I might as well share what I heard.

In the USA service personnel such as hotel workers, waiters, etc got tips for good service.
Soon tips became a considerable amount of their pay so something was of course done about it.
Now I'm not sure if the government actually enacted a tax or the employers just decided to lower wages but nowadays such personnel is much less paid and rely on tips for a decent overall pay which is why people consider not tipping rude.

In Europe and pretty much everywhere this phenomenon never occurred so leaving additional money for service is not normal at all because as logic dictates they are paid to do this. However it does happen if the worker was extremely good.

Sorry for the long read, just trying to share some info. It might not be fully correct and the USA might not be the only country where this is happening.

I worked as a waiter for around 7 years in Europe/Greece and I can assure you that leaving no tips or an insignificant amount, is considered very bad practice and will probably lower the service quality received on the next visit. I suppose this might vary depending on the country of course.

Then again Greece is in debt as much as the USA is, so... similar economies? :P

I live in Europe, and I do not tip...because I think the whole concept is silly...at which point our social norms developed to the state where we give extra money for waiters but not Mcdonalds workers, we give extra money for pizza delivery boys but not for cashiers, even though their salary is pretty much the same... seams silly. It is restaurant's owners duty to pay waiters for their job, not mine. If waiter doesn't work good just because I didn't gave him extra cash that means he is just a ****** waiter.

Well, don't keep that attitude if you're ever going to a stripclub, unless your anus is prepared for the bouncer wrath.

I'm in China atm, and last month I left a tip after an excellent dinner at a restaurant in Beijing - the waitress came out and ran down the street after me, thinking i'd forgotten my money on the table. Tipping just doesn't happen at all over here

I have a pikachu toy that said pika pi! and moved around, I left it in my bed at a hotel and apparently nearly gave one of the older cleaners a heart attack when she went to make the bed
I found him tucked in

I can remember that as a little kid I had a teddy bear and when I came back to the room the cleaner had tugged him in :D
