It would be funny to tie a road flare to the tip of a wing before takeoff. Somewhere you would see the red, and the smoke, but not the flare itself.

they can. also they are self oxidizing so they will burn up at altitude with little oxygen.

Just read the article. I thought it was the airlines being lazy, but it was really a genius way of saving time for flight mechanics. Way to go Alaskan airlines.
