I found out about Baskin earlier this month after seeing a trailer, and it looked pretty good. It came out in limited release and on VOD yesterday, so I checked it out. It's a Turkish horror film that follows a group of police officers who respond to a call for backup from another squad. Upon arriving at the source of the distress call and investigating the building, they discover some sort of cult living inside. I never saw them eating each other or anyone else, but they do seem to kill and cut up a lot of people. Earlier in the film, the camera lingers on meat quite a bit, which makes me think they are cannibals. However, I don't remember any on-screen consumption of human.

Baskin isn't short on unsettling imagery or creepy atmosphere. There's no slow introduction, as the first scene ends on a fairly unsettling note. After this, there is a gradual increase in how disturbing things get. Once they arrive at the location they're supposed to be investigating (which they find out used to be a police department), things ramp up significantly. The visuals continue to increase in how unsettling they are until the climax of the film. There is a lot of blood and gore in this movie. I didn't have a hard time sitting through this movie, but if you don't have any experience with that kind of content or have a weaker stomach, Baskin may be hard to sit through. Some of the grosser things I remember: A woman gives birth to a calcified fetus. This isn't particularly graphic (she stands in a large dish, squats, and the fetus drops down), but it's definitely disturbing. In another scene, one of the cops has his eyes gouged out with a knife by the cult leader, who proceeds to stick his tongue in one of the bloody eye sockets. This same cop is then forced to have sex with one of the cult members (the same one who gives birth to the calcified fetus). It's very uncomfortable to watch. There's plenty more than what I listed, but these are the bits that stick out in my mind. The film isn't particularly scary, although I don't feel disappointed. Again, it goes more for that unsettling aspect with grossness mixed in.

Baskin's story is a bit hard to follow. The main character of the film, Arda, has some ability or power where he experiences certain things or feelings in dreams that are paranormal (I think). Remzi, who raised him after his parents died (also the leader of the police squad), shares or has a similar ability. However, the things that happen in this dream really do happen. There's no cheap "it's all a dream" trick. The film will cut from a restaurant, to the cult's base, back to the restaurant, but paranormal things will happen in the restaurant that bring Arda back to the cult's base. The locations are tied together and everything is really happening. However, this makes the plot a bit convoluted, as you're not sure when or where things are happening.

While on the topic of the story, there isn't much of one. I feel kind of neutral about this. The character's have no background and their business is never really explained. They're just cops who respond to a distress call. I wasn't going to talk about this because I actually didn't notice. I was more caught up in the horror going on. I read some reviews to help me collect my thoughts, and the lack of story was brought up as a negative in every review I read, but it doesn't bother me all that much. Sure, it would've been nice if it was there, but I was caught up in the atmosphere and what was happening on screen. Your feelings on this depend on how absorbed into the film you get. I've definitely noticed this in other movies, but Baskin distracted me with its blurred take on what's real and what's not.

I would recommend Baskin. It's thin on story, but not on atmosphere and disturbing imagery.

Holy shit, 10 Cloverfield Lane was good.

John Goodman really is a talented actor. He showed he can do a serious role really well in Argo but he was fucking amazing in this movie.

I'll admit that the first half of Season 1 sucked ass.

But the latter half, once they took a darker tone in the show and introduced villains like Non, Toyman, and Brainiac-8/Indigo, is actually pretty watchable.

I like the fact that after Kara's Red K rampage, everything wasn't immediately fixed.

People are terrified of her by the next episode, and they're probably still terrified.

It may very well be worse than Agents of Shield.

It is an extremely bad show. This is coming from a DC guy, and SG is my favorite super hero. Seeing her lobotomized and raped by bad writing, social justice, and extremely sub par acting is like watching an abortion.

I have never met a marvel fan outside of the internet who likes that show.

Even my most diehard of friends readily admit that it is terrible.

We gave it three seasons, the quality did not increase. Even drinking didnt help that show get better.

Batman vs Superman was definitely not as bad as critics said it was. If you're a DC/comic fan, you'll definitely enjoy it.
Lex was annoying however. But that Flash cameo, HNGHHHHHH.

On a side note, I also watched 10 Cloverfield Lane, very fucking suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Yeah. It wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be.

Except batman killed several people.
Useless religious undertones the WHOLE movie that were totally out of place except for the parademons at the end and in the dream.

I mean Superman getting his ass kicked happens a lot, it wouldn't be fun if he rekt everyone. The only religious thing I liked was the painting, which alludes to Darkseid. Although Batman did go against his code, I liked how brutal he was. Reminded me of Thomas Wayne.

It's a bunch of pretentious assholes who are expecting this movie to be the same as all the Marvel movies....
Batman v Superman is actually a pretty darn good movie. Not amazing. But good. Like 7.5/10 good. Go watch it for yourself and don't expect people to decide you should like it.

That logic applies to both critic and audience reviews then, leaving both to be potentially unreliable.

I haven't seen it yet, so I won't pretend to judge it, but the reviews I read echo similar pros and cons with the film's story (particularly problems in the second half), the characters, the structure, and various other elements.

The movie isn't getting bad reviews because critics are upset they're not like Marvel movies. The movie's getting mixed to negative reception because it has problems.

The acting was good. The story had good intentions. The movie even looked good. But the structure was bad. The editing was forced. They had an extra year to edit it and it still came out with bad pace and bad editing. They have good reasons to give it bad reviews because as a film it is bad.
