So I've been reading up on EV training and heard with the help of Berries one could reset EVs and therefore it's not too late to EV train a pokemon unless it is lv100. (For Gen IV, the one I'm playing).

What I want to know is why isn't it too late? I've never reset EVs and wonder what would resetting the EVs do to the current stats of a pokemon. Would they decrease? And would a pokemon that EV trained from lv1 end up stronger than one that reset, and EV trained at lv70? Why not?

What if my pokemon was lv90 and had 252 EV defense, and 0 EV Attack, but later I reset the defense, and add to attack (making it 0defense and 252 attack) Once that pokemon levels, what would happen to it's defense and attack stats?

I depends on the pokemon. For the example you are asking 252 att 0 def and 252 def 0 att would have different affects on different pokemon. The equation that determines the output value of a pokemons stat is [((2 x Base + IV + (EV/4) x level)/100) +5] x nature

Base is the base value of the stat for that pokemon. Scizor has a base attack stat of 130 and a base defense stat of 100. IV is the IV for the current stat so a value ranging from 0-31. EV is the amount of EV's the pokemon currently has in that stat so a value ranging from 0-255. Level is the current level of the pokemon and nature is either 0.9 (if hindering nature) 1 (if nature doesnt effect the stat) or 1.1 if beneficial nature.

So Lets test it out:
Attack stat calculation for 0 EV and 252 EV for a perfect IV level 50 Adamant Scizor.
IV=31
Level=50
EV = 252 (and for the second calculation 0)
Base=130
Nature=1.1
[((2 x 130 + 31 + (252/4) x 50)/100)+5] x 1.1 = 200.475 rounded down to 200
[((2 x 130 + 31 + (0/4) x 50)/100)+5] x 1.1 = 165.55 rounded down to 165

By observing the equation above, everything stayed the same between the two equations EXCEPT the amount of EV's that the Scizor had in Attack. In this specific case Scizor lost 35 total Attack points by having 0 EV's in Attack. For every pokemon its going to be different because EV's are not the sole determiner of a pokemons stats. The BASE STAT, LEVEL, IV'S, EV'S, LEVEL, and NATURE, all go into the equation for determining the final output of a stat.

Coincidentally I have an adamant Scizor, with a characteristic "likes to thrash about" which makes me want to reset its EVs to find out its IV. So I'm just growing a crapton of berries in Emerald. Thanks for the explanation.

Also you said level twice.

Not in Gen IV. You have to level or put them in the PC to refresh the stats.

Also how would I know a pokemon's IV number of it's characteristic, if they already participated in battles?

Online calculators ask for only newly hatched pokemon.

They ask for newly hatched because otherwise you need to know how many EVs the pokemon has gained and in which stats to find out its IVs.

I know that, but if there a way to find out IVs after you train it and gain EVs?

I suppose not, so I'll just reset my pokemon's EVs to 0 then.

You know what grinds my gears? All of Pokemon's dice rolling. Random chance to hit, to activate an ability, to inflict status, to naturally cure one, to deal more damage, to boost stats, etc.

Sure it's just a fun game, but there's a competitive scene, and I just don't understand how people put up with such randomness when they need to be serious.

IMO, it takes away some needed skill to play effectively. I can switch into a type effective pokemon that will tank one hit and outspeed the enemy, but what about actually hitting them? "Whoops, I missed, there goes the chance I had to come back."

Could say it's like gambling, but in Pokemon I can't stack the odds in my favour. There are moves that boost accuracy sure, but they're not very common. I could boost my own evasion to maybe avoid attacks, but boosting defense is at least guaranteed to do something.

TL;DR: Pokemon's randomness ruins competitive battling for me.

I tried to do the 20 win straight thing. I hurt myself in confusion 18 times in a row. Immobilized by love 15 times in a row. Paralyzed by body slam 2/2 times, that fish 1/1 times.

Also, that fucking 2/3 chance of paralyzed can't move...

There is a bit much RNG, but randomness s needed in almost every game for it to not be stagnant. Any game that has 0 lick in it must bas as perfect as Chess.

If pokemon didn't have RNG it would be a case of spamming the strongest moves until one of you dies. That's boring, I like strategy in my games. I like that I can either choose a strong move with a low chance to hit or a weaker move with a guaranteed chance to hit, or I can risk a status effect and go for a third move.

Fyi if you're one of those people who whines about "muh hax" when the RNG doesn't favour them FUCK YOU DIRECTLY.

The argument is that there's too much of it, which might be fair. Losing because 8 attacks in a row doesn't go through because of paralysis or something similar doesn't add to the game, for instance.

Crits are an incredibly important part of the metagame; they ignore defensive boosts. Otherwise you could have a magic guard clefable use cosmic power 3 times and become literally invincible.

abilities don't activate on chance, they either activate on specific circumstances or apply a passive boost.

things like 10% - 30% secondary effects such as burn and paralysis are also a crucial part of the metagame. They prevent you from making careless switches without making switches completely useless. Simply running scald on a pokemon makes someone think before they switch into their scizor and start sword dancing, but there's still a 70% chance he'll not get burned, so if he absolutely needs to switch, he still has that option, it's just not ideal. You might think the random chance in this scenario is dumb, but it was the player's tact that put the other player into that position into the first place.

Pokemon is a strategy game, very similar in this regard to chess, where you must think ahead to put your opponent into a position where they have no safe options.

There are also checks and balances that prevent rng from ruling the metagame. There are pokemon immune to scald, immune to burn, immune paralysis, immune to flinch, immune to stat boosts, immune to crits, etc, etc ,etc. Having a bisharp on your team will make your opponent from using their intimidate user, having a choiced helioptile could prevent your opponent from scalding.

With this 50/50 playstyle, the pokemon metagame rewards reading your opponent correctly far more than a few lucky breaks.
