Blackstar ht-5r 5w looks like a really neat little valve head, pair that up with a 2x12 and it sounds good for something so cheap and will get you a Metallica / Megadeth sound.

But if you're going 80's, JCM 800 or 900, that's the thing to aim for.

Every man and his dog used them, Megadeth, Maiden, Slash, Jeff Beck, Angus Young. Pair it with something like a Tube screamer and it's that 80's sound.

really recommend the ironhearth combo laney

The orange dark terror has some really rich tones and a pretty rocking distortion for what you want. It'd do well for the hair metal stuff and what not. Might fall a bit short of, say, Rust in Peace and everything they did after that, but it'll knock you over for Peace Sells and washington is next.

The Night Train is more cutting, not as heavy but more muscular, a bit more AC/DC ish, it's versatile but I'm not a fan of the tone to be honest.

But I think it really blew up in the 80s, that's when everyone was finally putting their attention to it.

Well, the whole hard rock thing started with zeppelin, and after it killed the beatles' pop sound, guys kept growing their hair long post hippy era. Then they were rocking out to Sabbath, Hawkwind, Deep Purple, Nazareth and Foghat. Heavy music always got attention, but the whole metalhead mentality and intensity of metal really started to pick up in the 80s since every sub genre of music had it's own social scene (Punk, Thrash, Hip Hop) the most popular genres had the strongest followings.
