/music/ Weekly album discussion thread.

This week's album is "I, Vigilante" by Crippled Black Phoenix.

It's a post-rock album I found on a sharethread a while ago and I really love the album cover plus it's pretty good. I adore the vocals. Nothing really else to say lol

Review of Purple by Stone Temple Pilots

Well, I'm not too into grunge so I can't say I was really digging this a lot while listening to it. I can say that stuff in this vein, or maybe just this album in particular, does give me kind of a nostalgic vibe. Probably because I was a young child in the 90's and my memories of listening to music in that period are pretty scattered. But certainly this sounds like something my dad might have played back then. Heavily distorted guitars, with chunky, fuzzy, somewhat almost bluesy guitar riffs and solos. And let's not forget those HURRRHEEEYYHEEEYYYY type vocals.

In fact, the vocals may be what gives me the most nostalgic feelings, and also is the biggest reason why I don't really care for this album. Like, I don't know what it is, but I just feel like nothing about that style really gets me excited, or has me go "well that's interesting." I can't say the singer is unemotional, cause clearly he's pouring his heart into his vocals, but it certainly isn't anything that makes me feel any emotion. Put that on top of kind of bland guitar riffs that sort of repeat over 3-5 minute songs, and I'm just kind of like ho-hum

I will say that when songs sounded like they were gonna be quiet mellow jams, like Big Empty, I was actually kind of feeling it. That song in particular.. what did it remind me of.. like some Collective Soul type stuff, a grunge band whom I actually dig a couple of their songs or maybe it was almost Smashing Pumpkins-esue. But then, as grunge will do, it just ends up with a booming slow guitar laden chorus and I'm just like ok, here we go again.

I can't say I hate the album, I'm just kind of like whatever. It honestly sounds like a band I'd hear playing a state fair. One of those bands where some of the people know them and are rocking out, but a lot of people like me just stand for a few seconds, check out the band for a song or two, then get on our way. It's that kind of music. It's decently put together and I can see why they were/are popular, but it just doesn't hold my attention very much.

I'll give it a 5/10 for that reason

Best track: Unglued. A nicely rocking track that sounds like it could have been written by a band like The Offspring if the vocals were different.

Alright, Stone Temple Pilots. Purple isn't really my cup of tea and they're another band I don't really know apart from maybe hearing some tracks on the radio over the years. The grungy vocals aren't something I've ever liked that much. This is another one of those albums that I don't mind hearing at all, but I wouldn't go looking to listen to it on my own. I wish I could give some more commentary to satisfy thebestpieever, so I'll try!

The harmonies on track 1 were something that I actually liked. It's a pretty small element in the whole album, but a lot of the time it's things like that that I remember. Apart from a few moments like that, the album sounded pretty standard to me. Still, I wouldn't say it was bad just because of that, but it didn't hold much value to me personally. The lead guitars in Silvergun Superman are a sound I've never found appealing. The last track was just weird following the rest of the album. Sorry thebestpieever, the joke fell flat for me. I wish there were more positive things I could say about it but unfortunately I can't think of any. I'd probably be into this more if I'd listened to their music at an earlier point in my life like ferrettamer. I wasn't too into music in the 90s beside piano and violin lessons I had to go to at the very end of the decade.

The Chinese baby is creepy.

TBH I think I just might be throwing in the towel for this one. Like, yeah, it's probably the first really interesting thing that gets picked. But me and Muffins seem to be the only people that give a shit enough to write more than two sentences. So Eh.

Post-rock has always seemened like one of those madeup fake genres by trendy people to me, most of it just sounds like prog-rock to me aside from a couple of indulgences that don't seem to justify a genre for me. I like the keywork on this one, and the drumming, and the guitarwork. But I do feel the songwriting is kinda meh... in that it's a bit too, well, tight, and prog rock ain't about tight songwriting, there's supposed to be a lot more breathing space. Seems like just really long songs with a lot of bits, but none of 'em particularly proggy.

I like it moment to moment, but it's not proggy enough for me to chew, or songy enough for me to just keep going back on it again and again. I feel like it's at its best on the instrumental sections, but there's not enough focus on those for me to feel satisfied. I prefer my proggy stuff with Echoes level of indulgence in the instrumental, and this isn't that. But it's alright. It's good.

I like the arrangements, guitar tone is killer, the keys sound... wonky, but I like the keywork a lot. A lot of the chord progressions in the more... songy bits are very trite, very regular stuff, kinda throws a wrench into the whole prog proceedings.

Good, not enough prog, not enough pop. Just kind of a weird limbo in between, with really good material for boths that doesn't coexist all that well.
So, one week earlier. There you go, m'out.

Boooooooooooooooooooooo

I like reading what you and everyone else has to say (when they have something to say). You've been good at giving some context to the bands/albums that have been posted so far. Like ultrablue pointed out, somehow you're familiar with everything that's been posted. The point was to bring up music that's new and interesting to at least some people. Honestly, I haven't found the past few to be that interesting even though they were new to me. I was vaguely aware they existed, but having no info or interest in them, it makes it hard to write about. We were just keeping it restricted to pretty widely appealing music for a little while so people wouldn't just get annoyed with it and stop, but I guess it didn't work out perfectly. I'm hoping we'll get some music that has more to discuss and it looks like with Theo's album we're getting there. I'll pick something hopefully new to everyone next week. I'm sure ultrablue will too.

Leaving before TMW and I choose the most interesting albums to be listened to yet?

FOR SHAME!!

Also, I think it's easier to say more when you have prior knowledge of the album/artist. Some of us struggle to say more when we aren't as interested, I can only scrape a decent paragraph together most of the time because I have a degree in Enlgish probably and am used to writing about whatever pretentious asshole alert! woop woop . You on the other hand seem to have heard of every band so far sans theo's choice. I'm just seyzin, I know I would write a lot more if someone were to pick a band I had a lot of experience with and I'm sure others would as well.

Maybe... lol

as for this week, tbh I forgot about it until 2 hours ago on the bus so I was distracted through out most of it, but I've listened to a lot of the songs before so yea. I remember playing Singstar on PS2 and singing Vasoline. truly they were simpler times. and this album brought me back to those times. I don't feel as if anything was done particular well on the album, but it felt good and was kinda nostalgic. so yea that was fun. i dont want to rate this one so I wont.

STP Have a special place in my heart through no virtue of their own. No, they have a couple of songs that I really dig, and a bunch that are alright. But really the only reason I care about them beyond a nod an acknowledgement of their alrightness is that they'e one of the few bands born in the smackdab of the nineties that I don't absolutely loathe.

Aye, had I been alive and musically aware during that shithole of a decade STP would have been my lifeboat amidst all that terribleness. Their debut Core might be my favourite Grunge record by virtue of having six tracks that not only don't make me want to punch a wall, but I actually kinda dig.

That said... acknowledging that STP are alright elevated for me because they're surrounded by anal leakage... there's nothing much that can be said about them. Purple is where they started drifting away from grunge and taking influences from actually worthwhile music, but there's nothing too brilliant. It's still grungy, a bit, so the distortion is insanely heavy for what are pretty pedestrian riffs, but not as pedestrian as normal grunge so I can kinda groove to them.

In another problem of grunge that persists here: Every single riff gets used, way too many time, and the song structures are so predictable it's a bit painful. I may love Vasoline but even that short song could really use a god damn trim with it's 2 riffs. At least there's no song about rape or sexual abuse, so we dodged that grunge bullet.

In all honesty I think Scott Weiland might be the STP's secret weapon. While he's not great at anything, he's remarkably solid at everything. There's no song he can't pull off, even if there's also no song he can elevate. So he can always help carry these tunes, that are somewhat solid, making for an enjoyable tracks. Through a bit of tedium, and predictableness, I never find myself putting any of it down.

Fairly amicable, really. Of course songs about motorcycles, highways and motor oil are going to get to me, and they do, but I also sorta dug most of the other stuff on a "Yeah, this is pretty good" level. It may not resonate with me, but I can appreciate it and even like it. Only exception being "Silvergun Superman" a song that builds its chorus around a pop culture reference... I hate pop culture references of any kind in my music.

Meatplow was way too repetitive and hookless for me to even begin to care about. And Weiland using his chameleon voice to ape Kurt Cobain's droning, bored and apathetic strammer didn't help matters for me.

I dug the bonus track even if I hate the joke "Ha, ha, why would we do a soul track? Soul's dumb, we're a rawk band full of tr00 people." But it was the 90s, where happiness was outlawed and dancing was vapid because reasons. Still, it's a fairly solid soul track even if it was just made for a larf. And Weiland rises up to the occasion very well, because of course he does.

Kind of disjointed, really, but there's nothing much I can say about it. It's alright. I dig it. But, y'know, eh.

Okay my opinion on Purple.

On general aspects, this is a good album. The most important is that here the STP actually set a defined and more personal music identity from what it was their first album Core which was grunge in every way, this here is alt rock/hard rock/bits grunge, like if this was what the band wanted to do from a begining but couldn't do because they just had no idea what they were doing but they were having fun doing it. The higher voice pitch of Scott Weiland is an absolute plus in the new music and the instrumentals are more like Jane's Addiction than another Pearl Jam-alike band, it's more elaborated music.

My favorite song is Lounge Fly, it's a song that has actitude and makes me want to sing it and do the scene while being drunk. Interstate Love Song is charming rock and roll to my ears, a sweet melody and great lyrics that go along one for the other. Pretty Penny is another really enjoyable track, the acoustic scheme makes it the sweet touch to the album. The rest are all good songs but nothing I can highlight, in general all of them good rock and rool tracks with grunge vibes that try to be a little like Jane's Addiction.

Overall, a 6.7/10 album. Good rock, but for the general audience it can be like just more rock and roll.

We should probably set who are the true "´participants" of the weekly album thread, like apart from the mention list. Participants should be the ones who truly participate on the debate and can give a minimum of compromise when they are choosen like how bestpie gave me his place because he wasn't sure if he could be here on his day.

Yeah, let's just keep it to people who have actually participated. That's still a pretty good number. I guess we should hand it off to somebody else for today. The list of people who have consistently responded is:

masterofmuffins (X)
themagicwizard
haydentheviking (X)
ultrablue
thebestpieever
ferrettamer
teoyeezy
shibe (X)
skeptical
badmotorfinger (X)
kaisakuenkou

It's half of the songwriting Slayer. Slayer's songwriters were King and Hanneman. Hanneman god spidered, so it's half of Slayer. Araya's only contributions in their entire career have been the lyrics to like eight songs, and like seven other lyrics he co-wrote with either King or Hanneman.

For practical purposes Metallica and Anthrax have been dead for ages, occasionally twitching back to life and then going away to be a legacy act again.

Doesn't really matter. Using the name hurts no one. No one with anything to do would really care. It's just a name. Like "Yeah, it's not slayer" but then... like who cares? It's the kerry king variety hour, sure, the name doesn't really matter.

I mean. Sabbath was toats dead for like 15 years. And Slayer probably wouldn't go away, King will probably keep it going. Hell, maybe he'll let Holt do some writing, the guy has shat out three of the best Thrash albums in history in a row during the last 8 years. He'll probably get a third hired gun to take Araya's place... What's Jason Newsted doing these days?

slayer isnt anthrax or exodus. they cant just change vocalists. slayer fans threw enough of a shit fit over dave who contributed the least. then Jeff, which of course was justified, but at least he wasnt the vocalist. It'd be like Testament getting rid of chuck billy

Besides Sober and 40 Oz on Repeat, it turned out pretty great. I really enjoyed the incorporation of bluesier riffs and the slight self awareness, while keeping those sick surf fills. Although they do go a bit overboard with the lyrics, to the point where it loses it's sincerity, though If that was the goal, I don't think irony is Fidlar's strong suite. Biggest turn off was the telephone skit/intro to Sober, pretty fucking obnoxious. Also wasn't big on the digitally altered bits. Almost early wavves-like that they couldn't quite execute right.

Trying to figure out how I feel about sober, I like the chorus there but the phone thing felt a bit dated, like panic at the disco or something even. Overdose was probably the most interesting one I thought, but I thought they pulled bad habits off fairly well and kinda sums up the album "boo-fuckin-hoo"
