/music/ weekly album discussion

This weeks album is gonna be A Promise by Xiu Xiu.

Xiu Xiu is a band I started getting into about 5 months ago, and actually bought this album on my 18th birthday. The album is weird, emotional, and damn confusing. Expect noisy synths, whispers, screams, and sexually confused men. Jamie Stewart, the frontman, often writes in the perspective of a female in this album. The album touches on concepts of sex, suicide, a tracy chapman cover, and feels like witnessing Stockholm syndrome from a 3rd person point of view. Fits the album cover; a prostitute Jamie Stewart met while in Vietnam.

Ik im a bit late but i had to go to work but anyway

At first i was quite excited to see what else Sufjan stevens could do but i was unaware of the rapping in it it kinda ruined it for me as im not a huge rap fan and im rreally picky if i do like any, The beats were pretty nice but i got quite tired of them espically in tracks like "Flying ace" and "Booty call" for example idk its a pretty interesting album i through it sounds amazing either way the production is well good.

Dont really have a fav track all the sufjan parts are my favs

7/10 interesting listen either way

I took my time yes, but I am here still loyal to our little project to push it forward because I believe in the AOTW.

So.... Ssssssssssssssssssssssssisyphus.
First thing to mention is that I am not any familiar with any of the artists involved in this music project however I can say I enjoyed what I listened in every moment. Now I can't just stop feeling totally indifferent when listening some of the songs in the album but in general I liked the general of the album as a pop rap record more than an electronical rap record, I can also scense some synth pop in this which I liked a lot.

The first two songs are really easy to like mostly for be relaxing, not chill relaxing but more on the side of the simple production, it's all about the beat and the lyrics no extra elements that distract you from the songs enjoyment.

When listening to Booty Call you naturally think on a Kanye West song for the lyrics and the heavy beat, My Oh My gives me this same feeling rhythmically. Same continues in Rhythm of Devotion on his first part but then it moves into a Daft Punk vibe, I don't know if I liked that transition so I remain indiferent with that song.

I loved Lyon's Share, that funk styled rythm may not be the most original thing in the world but damn me if it doesn't work well. I wish I could say more about this song but is that simple, this is all on the rhythm, I loved it.

Dishes in the Sink is pretty much a really simple rap beat, it's good but can't find anything great in it, it even felt a bit odd so idunno :s
hardly Going on is like the semi-interlude follow up for Dishes in the Sink, what I liked here was the sound progression to an extended echo it's very atmospheric and I digged it.

Now, Alcohol. Man when Alcohol started Depeche Mode crossed my mind like a bullet and I loved it. I really dig the heavy electronical beats, it sounds like a Playing the Angel or Sounds of the Universe base with rap vocals, instrumentals and vocals go along with the more agressive atmosphere and I got to give more strong points in the songs progression as well.

Overall what can I say, I liked it. I see myself listening to this in the future when I crave some pop music that isn't mainstream. A solid 6.5/10, and maybe with more future listens my appreciation for this album might grown.
Strong points: Calm It Down, Take Me, Lion's Share, Alcohol.

Review of Sisyphus

Well, lemme preface this with my relationship to each of these artists, sans the hott butt sex. Sufjan is the one I've listened to the most. I am a big Sufjan fan as of recently and I think he's a proven genius. Son Lux is a dude who I got an album from earlier this year, not knowing he was as well known as I guess he is. I thought it was an alright album (I'm speaking of Laterns btw) but it was a bit repetitive so I haven't actually listened to it that much. Serengeti is probably the guy I've known of the longest, but also the one I've never actually checked out a full album from. I remember thinking he was a little strange, but kinda good, yet seemed slightly boring. But despite all that, I always did want to give him a chance and listen to a full album by him at some point.

Now, these three all together obviously make for an interesting group. My only experience with Sufjan so far has been his folky side. If I'm not mistaken Age of Adz is where he dabbles with some more electronic sounds, but I haven't heard it so this is my first experience with him over these kinds of instrumental backdrops. And I must say I like it. I dunno if it's because I like him the most already as a musician out of the three, but I found myself enjoying his parts the most.

Serengeti is... well.. he's there. If you were to tell me Sufjan and Son Lux were teaming up with a rapper for a project he certainly would not have been my first choice. He is kind of an oddball rapper who does what he wants, so without listening to this album, he makes sense. But once you start listening, he rarely stands out when he's rapping. He's kind of soft spoken, rarely getting too emotional or in your face, and I guess it was intentional but the end result for me is that he becomes the least memorable part of the album. I think Open Mike Eagle would have been PERFECT for this project if perhaps he had an in with Sufjan and Son Lux which maybe Serengeti does. I have no idea, but I kept imagining how well OME would work on this album. He also has a pretty mellow voice, but he's always doing interesting things with his rhymes and the way he uses that voice, sometimes shouting, sometimes sing rapping, etc. etc. I would have loved to have heard what he would've done in a project like this. Alas, it was not so. So there are my thoughts on Serengeti.

The album as whole I enjoyed for the most part. The best songs, or at least the most interesting songs, are when all three's contributions shine through. Rhythm of Devotion is the perfect example of this, and is definitely my favorite song on the record. It sounds like it belongs on a Gorillaz album. Serengeti's rhymes are a bit repetitive and odd ballish, but the beats carry him, and when he works off Son Lux, and the Son Lux beat is awesome, then everything jells so well. This, compounded with Serengeti bouncing off with Sufjan... yes. Clearly the best song.

I found some of those thoughts of mine to be present through most of the songs: Often the beat will carry Serengeti. When the beat is simpler and less interesting, Serengeti is as well. When Sufjan and Serengeti are bouncing off one another, I like the song more. The only exception being Take Me; beautiful song regardless of the fact that Serengeti's missing.

Overall, I definitely like this, and I feel like it is an album that will either grow on me the more I listen to it, or I may realize that it is what it is, and what I'm saying now will ring true for as long as I will every hear it. It's Gorillaz-ish which is good, but y'know, there was so much potential for this to be a lot better than it is. I'd love to see another album from them sometime down the road if this wasn't just a one time collab.

8/10. Best track: Rhythm of Devotion.

If Theo didn't listen to Sisyphus, I'm going to be slightly more upset with him than usual.

Sisyphus proves once again that anything Sufjan Stevens touches turns to gold. His vocal contributions reminded me of Age of Adz and Carrie & Lowell at different points. Some of the instrumentals also could almost fit on Age of Adz.

The parts by Serengeti on Rhythm of Devotion remind me heavily of Yeezus but I actually like it. The instrumental on it blends Sufjan and Son Lux's production, if my ears can be trusted. They seem so similar on this it's not even like they're complimenting eachother with any noticeable differences from their own solo styles. It's like a midpoint between them where you can't tell which is which. They blend right in together so completely, at least on that track.

At other points it's more noticeable. The first time I listened to this album (a while ago) it seemed like a Sufjan album with a rapper. My Oh My flips back and forth between Son Lux and Sufjan in a great way. Where they blend together on Rhythm of Devotion, there's a pretty stark difference on this track. Both ways work so well.

The format of Serengeti tracks followed by softer, more emotional Sufjan fronted tracks is one of my favorite things about Sisyphus. Serengeti, Son Lux and Sufjan are 3 noticeably distinct individuals instead of a totally blended group and it's pretty nice to hear them all having varying degrees of prominence across the different tracks while still interacting with eachother.

Serengeti does a great job with every track he's on. His inflections are right in step with the tone of the instrumentals he's rapping over and he also doesn't totally dominate the tracks, and Son Lux and Sufjan still shine through. I wouldn't have thought rapping would work with Sufjan's music so well (I'm not as familiar with Son Lux) but it's like Serengeti just belongs there.

Great production, nice layout, writing, performance, album cover, lyrics

I wanted to kind of preface this with a shout out to my city, because besides creating the best rap label (Rhymesayers), Minneapolis is also the reason Sisyphus is in existence – it was a commission from the Walker Art Center. I think that’s really fucking cool.

Sisyphus presents an album that comes off as a strange mixture to begin with, however, it still showcases a strong chemistry between singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens and rapper Serengeti. It works well particularly in the song “My Oh My”, where Serengeti chimes in with Sufjan on the hook, followed by synthy hits in the instrumental. The end dribbles off to a confused beat, Serengeti and Sufjan challenging each other with their reprises. This leads into the Sufjan-lead “I wont be afraid”, a somber ballad with hints of Son Lux’s electronics, along the lines of The Age of Adz. The album goes in a fairly consistent pattern of Serengeti rapping about various topics, frequently falling into the concept of love, followed by somber Sufjan-lead tracks. There’s an interesting glimpse into both of these personalities, and tying them in with Son Lux’s instrumentals works very well.

Where the album lacks is the variation. While all tracks are enjoyable, they’re presented in a fairly similar manner. The album gets exhausted by the end, yet ends with a climactic track, “Alcohol”. If the album didn’t end on such a high note, the repetition would have made this album extremely exhaustive by the end.

Sisyphus was a damn good album. Serengeti is clever, funny, and flows as well as ever. His rhymes have depth, especially in the song Rhythm of Devotion – one of my favorite tracks on this project. Sufjan’s lyrics are as emotional as usual, presenting himself in a light that we’re all familiar with. Combined with the weaving synth instrumentals by Son Lux, these personalities clash and create one of the most interesting collaborations I’ve heard in a while.

8/10

I dont really focus on how a singer sings, as long as they are bearable and the lyrics are good, I like them. I can understand what you mean and thats why I hate singers like Ed Sheeran and all those types of singers with their shitty chord progressions and generic voices and no drum songs.

Good lyrics don't make me like a song I don't enjoy listening to. Bad lyrics, as long as I don't consider them flat out disgusting, also don't make me dislike a song I already like.

I just think Buckley was a boring musician.

yeah, he was incredibly boring but I just love his combination of genres - I dont know, I just clicked with his music. Maybe its a breath of fresh air from my routine taste of metal and hip hop and 70s hard rock
