Hey guys, I need some feedback on a song I made. It's my first one, so please give me as much constructive criticism, but if it sucks don't get disappointed and leave me like my dad did. Thanks!

aint bad bro. If you are making it a rap beat add some kicks or 808, if it's just a simple instrumental just add some pizzazz to it.

Thanks man. I wouldn't say I'm going for a rap beat. I'm not really sure what I'm going for completely, but I'd say something a bit more ambient and noisy. I definitely want whatever I make to be able to stand on it's own without vocals. Did you listen to the second version? That's the better one. What do you mean by pizzazz?

Yeah the second one sounding good tho. By pizzazz i mean add some flavor to it and distinction so it isn't just a simple loop or a repetitive sound.

Get some synthy strings or guitar sounds in there but on the mixer make it quieter than all the other sounds so it is in the background and maybe add some reveerb effects and stuff.

This isn't bad at all dude. Try adding some new sounds into it. Cymbals help alot too. Even a simple 808 hat rhythm can make a difference. soundcloud.com/lolgan-bush/i-dont-get-enough-sleep This is a really simple tune I made but adding slight variation and introducing new sounds can really add alot to your tracks man. Keep it up dood. Off to a great start

Cymbals and bringing in other pads or synths even if it is only for a bar at a time can really change things. You're off to a good start dood. I have only been producing for a year this month actually. So please don't take everything I am saying as me being a know it all. I don't know it all I myself am still learning. I recommend watching tutorials. Asking for feedback is something I recently started doing myself and with the help people have given me I wish I had started doing it sooner.

Do you suggest adding even more cymbals? i added a bunch towards the end, which actually really helped with the sound i was trying to achieve. Forgot to say that I really enjoyed the song you linked. Sounds kinda similar in style to what I'm going for.

] Y'know. I think 2000s pop music is made specifically to break my heart. 'Cause I listen to songs like this and it's like "Oh my god, grunge is finally over, we're allowed to be ecstatically happy again on the radio, and it's so bubbly and hapy and I love it". So then I pick up the album and yeah, it's happy, but like half of the tracks are also shit. I guess it's always the case with bubblegum pop, Tony Basil never did another good song after Hey Mickey, but stil. It just breaks my heart.

Also Andrew WK who I've been studying lately, 'cause he's got like a primitive version of the sound I want to build for myself. Like, this very obnoxiously happy, bubbly major key rock that's still pretty heavy.

Can you tell I'm drunk? I get chatty when I'm drunk.

I'm sure insanity has contributed much to music, and other arts, throughout the years.

I agree with a lot you say, though. There's a lot of 2000s artists that are all way there, or popular stuff that's just lackluster. There's a lot of great music for every time period, of course, but to me, older pop is usually more enjoyable, though may contain more cheese.

I feel you when it comes to the stuff about happy songs, but I also believe grunge has been an important part in music, and still is, even if it's not in a pure form. We can see it in some britpop, for instance. Music is a fantastic way to take up problems. You often see it in prog metal and punk as well as many other places that is nothing like grunge.

If you want something more pop of that, then here are some nice songs that sound happy, but aren't:
Van Halen - Jump: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwYN7mTi6HM It's about jumping
The Clash - Rock the Casbah www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ9r8LMU9bQ A lot of stuff, like old vs new
Nena - 99 Luftballons www.youtube.com/watch?v=La4Dcd1aUcE Nuclear war

Yeah, I've always just hated the whiny attitude of Grunge. Punk is simlarly angsty, but it's equally angry, it's proactive. While Grunge is just fucking passive and whiny. And really that's not my biggest problem, I just feel like it's written like shit, musically speaking. But you know, opinions assholes and such.
I don't know, I feel like nowadays pop singles are way better than most old pop singles, but the albums themselves are way worse. I dunno, I'm just waffling.

Most new singles are just not very interesting in my ears, though I see where you're coming from. If you make a top 50 hooks of all time, I think none of them can be found in the last 10 years. For hip-hop singles, which is basically pop, some of the newest hits actually make my ears hurt. Other than that, there's a lot of great singles and one-hit artists, where there were more complete albums in the past. At least that's my opinion.

I was never a big grunge person myself, but I listen to some of it, and like how it has been integrated in other genres. So much grunge is similar, though, so get's boring so quickly. Punk is all over the place. I like the spirit of punk, to complain about stuff where everyone is wrong (at least in the eyes of the singer), such as anti-war and stuff. You also have very likable punk. Some friends I know call Green Day for pop-punk, which is contradictory. But just listen to Basket Case and it's pretty clear.

No matter what people's views are on styles through time, I am unaffected, as my heart really lies with Progressive. Unfortunately there's very little top notch progressive music, let alone new prog, or radio progTM

I can't say I'm the biggest fan of prog. I like most prog that I hear, but very little prog tickles the spot to make me love it. What do you think of Muse?

(10/11/2015) [-]
In my opinion, there is a "Muse sound" which I don't like. I like the Muse sound, but I get bored after one song, sometimes earlier. I don't have any actual valid critique of the band, as I haven't listened to enough of them, but they're not my favorite. I still have 1 or 2 songs of them on my phone, though.

To shortly cover prog, but in short: I look at prog a lot broader than what is often labeled progressive. For instance, every song that progress is progressive. I feel prog is music that "develops" during the song, or maybe simply change is a better word. Great example could be Dark Side of the Moon looked on as a whole. I also feel that every truly epic song must be progressive (epic=/=good, or powerful).

A good example of prog metal can be www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtiUoEbwD7Q though that might not be anywhere close to what you like to listen to

Any recommendations?

Guys, I'm in desperate need of some new bands. I've been listening to the same stuff for like 4 years.
Rock/metal/alternative.
Could give me some recommendations?

I'd recommend trying out some prog, like Rush.

Just to suggest something; here's my favorite Marillion song:
Marillion - Forgotten Sons

You can try to do something similar to what I'm doing. I'm going through every time period from the 1940's extensively looking at most popular and big impact songs, picking songs with great diversity, then following deeper in at areas I like. It's mostly pop, but that can be fine at times, too. Quite liked: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI9lo5BRJmg for instance

Prog thrash death southern.
Just nothing too extreme, I like some melody.

Týr - Ragnarok (Lyrics)
Heljareyga - Vetrarbreytin
Tyr and their lead singers side project, Heljareyga, are great on the progressive side of things.
Iced Earth - Angels Holocaust
Iced Earth I know is about 50/50 thrash and power.

I don't know if it's that amazing. After a while it just ceases to be that instrument as you understand it. And it's cool and all, but it's not a bass times three, it's... something built on the foundational elements of bass.
