#22: Scallops Hotel - Plain Speaking

Scallops Hotel is a project of milo's, and it was my understanding that previously, Scallops Hotel differentiated from his regular rap in that he lowered his voice with an effect (a la Captain Murphy and many others) and that a lot of the release would be self produced. Well, gone is the low voice effect, and what we get with Plain Speaking is an album with moments of straight "bars," and then moments of peace and simplicity. First of all, I have a lot to say about milo this year because another one of his releases is on this list (the only spoiler I'm going to give the whole time I'm doing this hopefully), so I'll try to keep some of my overall statements about his growth confined to the next time I speak of him.

milo is so prolific, that in a whole year, from September of last year to September of this year, he put out four different projects. Last year's "a toothpaste suburb" was a pretty anticipated release, but since then, a lot has changed for milo. Not only in life (listen to his podcast with Kinda Neat and you'll see what I'm talking about), but I think his three projects after that one represent a sonic and at times lyrical change in style, without completely abandoning his old style. Plain Speaking, and last year's (Boyle) and Piles EP as REDWALL, are very experimental, which is why I think they aren't represented under his regular rap name. As I mentioned before, there are some straight bangers here, "lavender chunk" and "bookoo bread co" as some examples, but then there are tracks like "true nen" where a simple beat is the backdrop for milo rhyming in a, I think, more cynical manner than his fans are probably accustomed to, which I think is a theme on this album. And I think consistently throughout there are switches from upbeat, very lively tracks where milo goes in, to slower, more laidback experimental tracks; whether it's solely instrumental, or milo is just singing the whole time, overlapping his vocals (sabil's lullaby), or where he almost kinda of slurs his words over a very slow, airy instrumental (roc marciano riff suite 1).

Overall, Plain Speaking is definitely a very cool and interesting listen, and I think serves well as a precursor to milo's next release...

Best track: lavender chunk (feat. Hemlock Ernst)

Also, I've been seeing Hemlock Ernst on a fuck ton of releases recently. I haven't checked anything of his out, but it seems like he's gaining a lot of features in 2015. You heard any solo stuff by him?

He's in that one band that has that one popular song that I don't know the name of right now.

And I remember seeing that he put out like an EP with Madlib that sounded pretty cool from what I checked out. Haven't listened to that fully yet, but I'm sure I will eventually.

I actually really did enjoy this release. Things That Happen At Day is also something of his I really enjoy, I think milo works well over a specific type of instrumentation and mood yet kills it on both of those fairly different releases. Very hit and miss for me.

Sorority Noise - Joy, Departed

I fucking love emo, man. And this is good emo. A lot of emo is whiney and doesn't go anywhere, which doesn't bother me all that much because i love listening to whiney music. It makes me feel less like I'm whiney and makes me feel fun.
The first track opens and already makes you think this is gonna be a victorious album. The small, slow guitar strums mixed with the quiet ballad singing of "These ghost limbs were never taught to swim" followed by a crescendo-esque, climaxing set of guitars a la Godspeed feels so fucking great, an unapologetic confession setting the tone of the whole album followed by that victorious instrumental is amazing.
While this is all definitely midwest emo, there are really strong changes in mood/atmosphere with some tracks. Art School Wannabe opens like a pop song, by far the catchiest track on the song, while the track "Using" falls into an intense screaming when the chorus sets in.
The second half is essentially about getting over his depression, and it feels great. This album is a really nice album to listen to.
The lyrics are good, while the subject matter can be a little embarrassing, that's totally the point. It's unapologetic, emotional hardcore about this guy in his mid 20s who feels like shit and is trying to feel way better.

Check this out if you love emo/post hardcore, it's catchy, fun, and lyrics make you feel really good. And the album art is some of the worst album art I've had in my library. Can't believe I have this shitty cover in my record collection.

Tolgahan Çoğulu & Sinan Cem Eroğlu - Microtonal Guitar Duo

Tolgahan Çoğulu is a Turkish guitarist who performs Turkish/western classical music, along with a variety of other styles. He plays custom modified guitars, designed by himself with adjustable and non-adjustable frets to preserve the sound of classical guitar while allowing for the microtonal scales used in Turkish music. On this album he teams up with Sinan Cem Eroğlu, who plays a fretless acoustic guitar. Their musical selections consist of both eastern and western music. Kara Toprak (Black Earth) is a classical Turkish piece by composer Aşık Veysel. French composer Erik Satie is also represented by arrangements of two of his short pieces originally for solo piano: Gnossienne No. 1 and Gymnopedie No. 1. The two pieces contrast eachother very nicely, serene and disturbed. This album actually has one of my favorite interpretations of Gymnopedie No. 1. I don't listen to many guitar albums, but this one seriously caught my interest after hearing about Tolgahan through his youtube videos demonstrating his instruments.

Favorite track: Kara Toprak
www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJsUqzQndQE

I haven't listened to anything by Milo other than a couple tracks here and there. A couple of those tracks were on Dimming Awe, which is coming up (there's my spoiler). Is this the one where he name drops random authors and philosophers with no context just to sound intellectual, or does he do that all the time? From what I've heard, I like his choice in instrumentals to rap over. His laid back style works for him too. I'd probably like him if I was into rap.

What is this? I thought AOTW was on thursdays? Anyway, this is somewhat interesting, if only 'cause it's new. And I also happened to have listened to it via my actual-musician friends. T's gud, but I mean... I don't know why people act very surprised about microtonality, if you play sax or violin you already know how to play with it fairly well. Hell, even if you're bend-happy with your guitar you can throw in basically any pitch imaginatible in between E2 and E7. But yeah, good album, I liked cavatina.

This is my/ultrablue/teoyeezy's self-indulgent 25 day-long series talking about our favorite albums of 2015 before the year ends. I don't know if anyone's surprised about microtonality, it's mostly Turkish/eastern Mediterranean music and that's one of its defining features.

This just reinforces my suspicion that you've heard everything I can bring up.

Ahh yes, I remember this guy. I liked one of his videos on youtube to remember him. Pretty good stuff.

My point in that his style is changing, or rather evolving, is that he doesn't really namedrop philosophers anymore (I'd argue that they probably aren't necessarily without context, but whatever floats your critical boat, nigga). I think he become conscious of criticism (like you and teoyeezy) and reflected that. There's a song on his next album that kind of delves into that, but I can't talk about it YET.

#23: Woob - Adaption

Woob is an ambient/electronic artist that I got into last year when I heard his album Have Landed, which I loved. But what I've come to discover with Woob is that he pretty much never sticks to the same type of sound from album to album. In the case of Adaption, we are given an spooky concept electronic effort with hints of industrial thrown in. In his own words, "‘Adaption‘ is a psychological thriller / horror musical adaptation of a story centered around a small coastal town’s abandoned video-arcade that mysteriously springs to life after midnight transforming all its unsuspecting visitors into the undead." I remember when I first read that, I was super excited to hear what that could possibly sound like in album form. The first couple tracks definitely are what set that whole concept up I think. We get these first two tracks that build up slowly, ambient sounding and atmospheric, before the third track springs to life with these pounding drums and bright, loud synth melodies. I imagine that is the arcade coming alive, as he described. I think Adaption balances quite well between being a electronic haunted house soundtrack, to like an 80's dance party. And I feel like the theme is kept present, with similar moods present in the ambient tracks and some similar melodies and drums in the louder industrial-esque tracks, without being too repetitive and making the tracks as single pieces of music stale.

Best track: The Midnight Arcade

Did I ever tell you how much I hate the word "effort" in that context?

I didn't know woob varied his sound so much that he ventured into retro brotronica. ;^)
I'll give this one a listen, the variety in this one album sounds like it could be interesting. Have Landed and Ultrascope are great albums so I'm sure there's a good amount I'll connect with on this one.

Too bad so sad

There's only a few brotronica songs on it, but they fit in so well. The song Dead End sounds like it could be right up your alley. Spooky and quite synthy.

Aphex Twin - Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2

Come with me on a trip all the way back to January 2015...
This was my introduction to Aphex Twin after years of successfully avoiding his music. The title basically tells you what you're in for: electronic music performed on acoustic instruments - mainly prepared piano and drums. There are some delay effects used, but other than that, the tracks are pretty sparse on effects or distortion of any kind. They're pretty bare in general, with limited instrumentation that doesn't crowd in together to create any dense textures. If it was a sculpture it would be made up of a bunch of sticks and small objects arranged with lots of space in between. I hope teoyeezy cringes at that sentence. The tracks vary in development, ranging from a 20 second recording of a snare drum being hit faster and faster or a short solo piano compositoin to what sounds like a small ensemble of robots jamming.

Favorite track: diskhat ALL prepared1mixed 13 (no video so here's an alternate version)

I think this song sounds like the word "woob" does. This is really cool. I think the production is astounding, and it does feel like a psychedelic run through a haunted house. I really like this, I'll check the full thing out.

**note - I'm not doing these in order. I'm just kind of using these 25 days to show 25 different album I enjoyed this year. At the end I'll have a comprehensive list that ranks them all, but for now I'm just kinda going back to things and listening to them and using this as a way to keep track.

Doomtree - All Hands

This album was announced in late 2014, and I pre ordered it in late November I think, for the January release. This is one of the January releases, along with Joey Badass, that I've still been really enjoying. Doomtree are the rulers of indie rap shit, man.
Cecil Otter did the bulk of production on this record, with additions of the other doomtree producers.
The chemistry is probably the most impressive part of this, the way each member of Doomtree works so well with each other and how they all produce a cohesive product.
While each track is essentially a posse cut rap song, the production and general atmosphere to each one completely changes. The second half of this is super hard hitting, fast, intricate rap, too. Generator is one of my favorite Doomtree cuts, it shows how well Mike and POS work together. I love how fearless this album is, it's all an homage to teamwork and winning. I love that feel to it.
It makes me super excited for the next POS project, he's by far always my favorite part of this album.

Doomtree is tight. Still haven't gotten a full album from them, but they're always in the back of my mind. POS is definitely the fucking shit, and everyone else is dope too.

Also, the reason mine are in order is because I knew I was going to do this already so I thought about it before posting so I already have the whole order predetermined.

I guess not. I myself find it hard to put recent releases on my list just because I haven't listened to them enough to really judge them in the grand scheme of things. I'll probably list a bunch of albums at the end that I like that didn't make the cut for that and other reasons.

Whatever mane, in like 4 days I won't see her ever again. I'm listening to sad music about this, i'm sad

Also, I was asking about bandcamp because this winter break I'm going to play around with my MIDI and stuff because I've been recording a lot of strange sounds and textures from life and I wanna do something with them, so I think I'm gonna do a thing where I make images and corresponding ambient soundscapes. I figured bandcamp would be a good way to place both the images and the sounds and whatnot, it'll give me something to do at least for the 5 weeks

Sorry to hear that, friend.

That sounds like an interesting idea. Bandcamp would probably be the best place since you can clearly see the artwork and enlarge it and what not, in comparison to soundcloud which is shit for doing stuff like that. Bandcamp > Soundcloud in general.
