yeah, i'm a fan of the early descendents albums, which can get pretty silly in terms of lyrics. but when you clearly say that cutting is okay, that's where i draw the line on faggotry

Not all lyrics are meant to be taken as earnest thoughts. Particularly metal. There are Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Metallica songs all of which endorse and celebrate beating the shit out of people. Obviously not the type of song that you're supposed to live your life by, even if the people who wrote it do.

Which is just a thought in the abstract about lyrics, I don't get the impression that the members of Korn understand anything other than literalism. But still.

yeah i understand that. it's just the way some of their songs are written. they're clearly made for the emos and misfits of high school that are prone to cutting. it just bugged me.

So? Who cares who they're made for, just take what you can out of it. Which if it's nothing that's fine, but judging a thing because "other people like ti this way" is pretty silly.

I only know the lyrics to one Korn song, which is Blind, and I rather like them. They're fun. But yeah, they do sound ridiculous at times when I read the lyrics to some of their other songs. And some just plain make me uncomfortable. But I've never been much of a lyrics guy. I care about every single other thing in a song more than I care about the lyrics.

So I just watched Frank, now I'm sad.

So this film, it's about a musical eccentric called Frank. Pleb joins the band, plebs about a bit, drama happens, pleb leaves. END
The first half of the film is basically the story behind Trout mask replica where the band shut themselves inside a house for a year, write an album, perfect the album, record the album then go out on tour or something. My problem is that this is what I have always fucking wanted. Perhaps not to the extreme of the Trout mask sessions, but at least something. I'm a third year uni student and I thought that coming to uni (composition course) would help me find some people that could push me musically and push my experimental mind. In reality, I know a few guitarists, a pianist and a few djent ... fans. The closest I have to pushing my experimental side is someone who has a slight interest in 20th century classical music.
I'd love nothing more than to find a group of unstable people who I could create some truly experimental music with. Minimalism, repetition, microtonality, twelve tone it's all been done. I want people who can find creativity anywhere, but all around me I just see, well, people who just enjoy music instead of living it.

Uni isn't the place for experimental music, on the course at least.

if you want that you'll have to look around for underground clubs which might be available outside of your course. with out trying to sound "I'm so smart" uni is the one place you'll find plebs that listen to really shitty music and think dupstep is experimental.

keep in mind that the film will romanticize the fuck out of it all, the real Frank was.... not as cool as I first thought he would be.

I've been wanting to watch it for a while, but I haven't had the time.
Anyway, I enjoy experimental music, sometimes. But I don't particularly care to create it or value it a lot. See, here's the deal: I value songs that I enjoy. That's... well, that's about as broad and useless of a value system as you can have, but that's as far as I can break it down. Sometimes that means a trite, generic but sweet beatles ditty, sometimes it's lovely Ravel concertos, sometimes is swagger filled cutting riffs like Megadeth, sometimes it's brutal genre bending like Ne Obliviscaris, sometimes it's weird virtuoso exploration like Buckethead and somtimes it's just... weird like The Residents. And I just care about how much I enjoy it. I don't care if it's new, if it's been done before, if it's in this or that style, all I care is how much I enjoy it. So I don't really care to make experimental music, I just want to make music I enjoy, and whatever sound happens to land in my head is the one I make.

These are the most "out there" pieces I've made, and they're still fairly mundane. But they're what I wanted to make, and they make me happy. That's enough for me.

I really dig Annihilator for some reasons.
First of all, it was one of the first bands I've listened to when I really started with Metal (Iron Maiden doesn't count because I wasn't into Metal at all by that time, I was really young. Love Maiden tho)
It sounded really different to me, appart from the Thrash Metal sound I was accustomed to. It was really technical but somekind of raw at the same time (Alice In Hell). And then the next albums blew my fucking mind. The lyrical themes, the composing, his signature riffs...
Also, I admire Waters so much. How he fell in drugs and lost his family, but he rose from his ashes, and became an awesome and cool person. (He reminds me a bit to Robert Downey Jr, about how he recovered and became a better person). Metting him was one of the best experiences in my life.

damn, that's a story... He sounds like an awesome guy, I'll get into more annihilator most definetly.
The two metal bands I can remember music videos for is enter sandman and seasons in the abyss which is why I have such a deep love for Slayer and Metallica. Before the glorious world of metal took me, I was a rap guy and I could've ended up a dindu defender... Metal changed me for the better imo, it started with hard rock like Clutch fav band ever <3 then Sabbath, then Metallica and Motorhead, then mastodon and it's all spiraled since then - every metal band on my "the metal" playlist is loved by myself although my favorite is definitely Sabbath and Mastodon, I like them for pretty much the same reason you love Annihilator - and cus of Ozzy's biography, I've grown a major man-crush for Bill Ward

By Warlord you mean Warlord from USA? The ones who released "And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun..."? Worth listening to, but I would advise you that you leave that band for later, because maybe you'll not enjoy them at this moment. US Traditional Power Metal is not the typical sound, it's far different from the Power Metal stuff people are accustomed to.

About Manowar, well, when I was younger, I was into their new stuff but nowadays I can't stand it. I enjoy them from "Battle Hymns" to "Louder Than Hell". It's a pretty important band if you want to understand US Power/Heavy/Epic Metal.

About Overkill, they hardly have any bad album, all albums are good to me. But their early stuff kills!

I can't say a lot about Municipal Waste, but "Hazardous Mutation" and "The Art of Partying" are esentials if you want to understand this last wave of Thrash Metal bands.

Not that black and white, or bland colors are terrible, good art is good art, but I tend to fall in love with the colorful stuff more often.

I think it's the most key to start off with if that's how you're discovering music. If I hear something playing somewhere and I like it without knowing what the album art looks like, it won't matter so much when I find out what it is. Most of the time, I do see the cover art either at the same time or before I hear the music, so it plays a big part in whether I choose to listen to it and what I think of it when I do hear it. I don't think I have any albums in my library where I actually dislike the artwork. Sorry ultrablue, I can't bring myself to add Long Arm just yet.

Along with album art, I also think track titles have a big part in determining my impression of the music. My favorite albums all have really consistent themes. If the music itself pulls me in, having those other 2 elements reinforcing it is the best.

I only really care about track titles if they're: A)Misspelt or B) contain a cuss word. In which case I go in with terrible expecations. But my expectations really don't matter all that much to whether I end up liking something, because I don't form expectations that are too strong. Otherwise I don't really care, but I am particularly fond of rhyming titles and bible reference titles.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT, BIANNUAL PAUL GIAMATTI THREAD! IT'S FINALLY HERE! AFTER TWO LONG YEARS, IT'S HERE!!

POST YOUR PAUL GIAMATTI PICTURE REPRESENTING YOUR PAST TWO YEARS, AND POST YOUR FAVORITE TWO-PART SONG! Fleet Foxes - The Shrine / An Argument

The Shrine/An Argument by Fleet Foxes is definitely one of my favorite two part songs, the first half especially is so fucking beautiful. i can't believe Robin went to college after making one of the best indie folk albums of the decade.
The transition is fantastic, the faster first half falling into the second half followed by the noisey brass...its so sparkly. I love it.

Please man, don't make me choose between these 2 two-parters.

Tim Hecker Live Room + Live Room Out The sound design is so damn impressive. I'm blown away every time I hear it. One of my favorite things to just sit there and really listen to. I'm so glad Tim Hecker stepped out of the tranquil ambient realm to make Virgins something that's really gripping.

*shels - Plains of the Purple Buffalo (Part 1&2) Plains of the Purple Buffalo is right at the top of my favorite albums I've found in the past 2 years. That beautiful atmosphere with those simple but totally captivating riffs. The music, track titles and cover art create such a strong image in my mind every time I listen to it.

I'm struggling to find a Paul Giamatti picture that really captures all of my feelings towards the past 2 years. I've had a lot of great experiences and some very shitty ones. You can't tell for sure what Paul is feeling in this shot, so it comes the closest.

also, I agree about the pic of paul giamatti

i chose mine because he looks slightly troubled, but hes still clean shaven. he still has hope in his eyes. he's hanging in there. he's a renaissance man.

Massive Attack-Angel (Mezzanine album) I need opinions; is this too dark to play in the background during sex? It has a bit of a creepy atmosphere but everything else is on point.

I'm not too familiar with Com Truise's stuff, but I'd be so excited to see a show with all of them.

I want us to get to the point where we can tour with live animals. No more of this low budget youtube sampling.

LOL it's like when solo artists get a whole band or orchestra together for a live performance. I must say, what a spectacle that would be. Either the most beautiful thing anyone's ever seen, or complete and utter chaos. I'll grab some popcorn.

I wonder if that's been done by anyone. It's not like you'd ever be able to control the animals to the point where they'd consistently make noise when you wanted them to. Especially dumb animals like frogs and peacocks.
