How do you actually get rid of the whitespace on photoshop cs2?

Create a new layer, copy/paste picture in there and delete background layer. Than its just to delete white space.

TIP: You have to open the picture in an image editor ( You need to login to view this link is free) and make the unnecessary white space around it, so to say, invisible. You just need to select that area then delete it, making it a gray-and-white checkerboard style.

How do i make it a transparent background?

cut out the background using eraser tool in gimp or photoshop (brush with soft edge)
save as PNG

you can also use the pen tool in photoshop like i do, and make a mask and adjust the mask however.

Mines just plain white, the mouse cursor disappears as soon as it touches the white space.
