I don't play Grey Knights, but from what I've heard/ read online, is that they're pretty good at close combat due to their force weapons and op gear. If you want to beat them, you'll probably want to get devastator squads, stay out of their range and shoot them to bits.

Ever sense i created this post i have signficantly altered my lists and now play at a regular of 2k points instead, but thanks for the advice

If you are playing against anything with an armour save of anything, in this example 2+ make sure you equip a bunch of AP 1 or 2 weapons to deal with them, that's all you have to do, make sure you can kill them easily and they won't get in your way.

a friend of mine has a 1k list that only has 8 models in it. it goes something like, Astorath the grim as Hq, 5 deathguard with jump pack and power weapons, Lamarties, a death company dread. and a storm raven. it sounds mad but he has won most of his games.

but no. Terminators arnt much of a problem when you roll 100 attacks. eventually your friend is going to roll a bunch of 1s. Your problem is mostly Grey Knights being Grey Knights. Its just what happens when the you let someone who collects the army write their rules.

thanks all for the great advice for fighting the termies, and with mephiston in general you've been a great help

ur gonna need autocannons in place of the bolters, throw power-swords on you sargents and the like, don't forget to bring a furioso dreadnaught or two. and some meltaguns for squad support. tell me how it goes.

and. grey knights love to rely on their thick armor. lots of krack grenades, a special suprise treat for pre-melee.

Do not charge Mephiston into GK terminators. You will hit first. They will make their saves. They will hit back and force you with a daemonhammer.

In fact, don't charge him into any terminators. His weapon is AP 3.

GKs don't have much in the way of long range fire power that isn't really expensive. Stay out of the range of their psycannons and shoot them to bits.
User avatar #3 - pjotor (02/23/2013) [-]
Did you charge a terminator squad with only Mephiston?
#2 - wenst ONLINE (02/23/2013) [-]
well honestly i was just talking about termies in general not just grey knights specifically

Standard termies in CC really aren't that great, they can take a beating against like 10 units or so where the low number of dice rolls can help them save quite a few wounds. I have killed a squad of terminators using standard boys, 30 man squad with very few casualties. I have also seen players even kill a 5man squad of terminators using tactical, it required some hilariously bad dice rolls but still is doable. Always remember, close combat is about risk management, you don't want to commit your assualt units to a fight they can't mob up quickly, or you risk being tarpitted.

Numbers are what kill termies, throw enough dice against a squad and even the best will fail the occasional roll. Though I wouldn't suggest assaulting any squad of terminators that remotely assault kitted. Even their powerfists can be deadly if you can't guarantee the bulk of the squad will be dead before their turn to strike. If you are using assault squads on them be mindful if they have heavy flamers, a heavy flamer will RUIN YOUR DAY as standard space marines thanks to overwatch.

Another thing you will learn to stay away from is burna boys if you ever face an ork player who fields them, since you seem to have heavily geared yourself towards assault(Like the player above me said, pick up some devastators.) a unit of burnas could potential kill your entire squad before they make it to the enemy. That is not to mention if you actually fail the charge and have to try again later, opening yourself up to even more D3 auto-hit.

I'm kind of confused to your post though, did the HQ specifically kill your HQ, or did the squad of terminators? Because if you have faith in your HQ being able to kill his, you should really force a challenge. Never put Mephistion into combat with Terminators by himself, bring in back up and use a challenge to pull his HQ into 1v1 or to make him take no part in the CC.

his hq challenged mephiston when i charged with him and two assualt squads so there was no way he could of declined it and his HQ was the grey knight pally with the force sword and ET so even though i did wound him with a S10 sword he couldn't be instant killed
User avatar #6 to #5 - deadrifler (02/23/2013) [-]
Why couldn't he be instant killed? Unless there is an errata I am missing, you had the instant death on his HQ.
#9 to #6 - wenst ONLINE (02/23/2013) [-]
the rule ET makes it so instant death effects just apply a wound instead of instant killing (Et = eternal warrior)
User avatar #12 to #9 - deadrifler (02/24/2013) [-]
Yeah I just double checked my GK codex, and only Draigo has ET.
User avatar #10 to #9 - deadrifler (02/24/2013) [-]
None of their HQs have Eternal warrior...
User avatar #11 to #10 - deadrifler (02/24/2013) [-]
^non-named HQs have ET
#13 to #11 - wenst ONLINE (02/24/2013) [-]
yea and the HQ that meph fought was draigo
User avatar #14 to #13 - deadrifler (02/24/2013) [-]
Ah gotcha, yah never commit a HQ to fighting Draigo 1v1 lol.
User avatar #15 to #14 - lobsternewburg (02/24/2013) [-]
Mephiston can't decline a challenge if he's the only character in combat. And I don't think he'd fare that badly against Draigo anyway.
User avatar #18 to #15 - deadrifler (02/25/2013) [-]
I'm just used to always keeping my HQ in squads since thanks to Chaos I can't decline challenges and I must challenge, so I have to keep my HQ in a squad wit ha sergeant XD
#16 to #15 - wenst ONLINE (02/24/2013) [-]
he didnt he got a couple wounds off on draigo its just that dragio has ET and a force wep so he cant be instant killed BUT he can instant kill mephi
User avatar #17 to #16 - lobsternewburg (02/24/2013) [-]
I suppose if you fail 1 wound he can force you, didn't think of that.

And he's S 10 against you.

I'd recommend not charging terminators with Mephiston, his weapon is only AP 3 with 6E.
#19 to #17 - mephiston (02/25/2013) [-]
Screw that, those Terminators look like pussies, bring 'em on.
