A video game has a characteristic books have tried to emulate since the first text was written: the ability to actually put you into the story. The artistic part is not only one part of it, but the whole thing. By playing, you're not just watching a character, you are becoming the character. Meeting Epona, catching your first pokèmon, facing desperation while crowded by zombies, watching Wheatley become evil, realizing the truth of your life in Bioshock, trying to save your son in Heavy Rain, even something as simple as getting your Sim a date, it's all you. You become part of the story, you live all those things not only as a watcher, but as a person. It's all part of you, your memories, your feelings. You learn from it, you change your view of the world for it, you are it. A video game is not art because it contains art, it's art because it gives to you the same things art does. You love it, you dedicate your time to it, you become one with your controls. If that's not art, then I don't know what is.

Pic slightly related.

If music is considered art, storytelling is considered art, and visual design is considered art, how i something that combines all three not art? I've played plenty of games with breathtaking visuals, amazing music, and complex plots with great character development and symbolism. I've played games that are as emotionally engaging as any films/books/etc., especially since you directly control the main character. There are dumb, mindless games sure, but there are also stupid generic pop songs and ****** uninspired movies. Honestly, I don't see how anyone can argue that video games aren't on par with other art forms.

Like this?
Dust: An Elysian Tail, everyone. It is easily among the best games I've played. It is by far the most beautiful. I mean, look at the animation. It is flawless.
And this **** was made by a single animator who, prior to beginning to make the game, knew zero coding.

Eh, I just finished it. There was a huge lack of combos ot make. At first, it was pretty cool. It got a bit tedious though, that you could only use that few movesets for a smash 'em up game. It might be a bit cringe-worthy for some since it's not really too professional. Good, nonetheless. I enjoyed it.

videogames are at that delicate stage where they're still made for mass appeal to males between the ages of 13 - 21 and toddlers. That's not very wide appeal. Unfortunately, AAA companies aren't as brave as indie developers when it comes to truly exploring the artistic side of the medium which ends up making it quite difficult for the game culture to mature...

Because most people that don't play games want to believe that games are for kids and kids aren't supposed to be able to appreciate art according to those people.

Videogames are as much of an art form as any other. I want to accent the word "form" here - it is a shape through which we can strive to convey meaning. Just as a painting or a movie can be considered a masterpiece, so it can be with a video game. It might take another 50 or so years (I hope less) untill we realize that. Just look at the history of recent art forms - film and comics (or "visual novel" if you want). Those were in the begging also only considered only a primitive form of entertainment but over the course of time gained recognition. You still have ****** movies and comic books for small kids (don't get me wrong, I'm not sayin those things are inferior), but in the same way, you have a lot of ****** paintings, awful novels and classical music which is unlistenable
What I'm trying to say that is that I think (and hope) that in time we will come to recognise video games (or virtual reality simulations) as art - we will have our Mozarts and Steinbecks of video games.

I mean if we really think about it, what the **** is art? What makes an artist? What's the difference between a glass sculpture of a dolphin and that same sculpture just turned into a smoking pipe? The pipe is tied to something bad? Schindler's List is tied to something bad and that won ACADEMY AWARDS!
User avatar #131 to #56 - daentraya (10/25/2013) [-]
Art is anything made by anyone for the purpose of enriching the world, communicating, creating thoughts in others, or getting ideas into the physical world. In terms of video games, i call it art, if it was made for that, more than being entertainment. Journey is art more than a game, and generic shooters are games not art; and Skyrim is a game and with those graphics and beauty, art.

I think yahtzee is a better comedian than critic. A good critic should be able to admit it when something is good.
#74 to #2 - jubajubejiblets (10/25/2013) [-]
The other thing about him that he admits himself is that if he was nice about his reviews he would not get the viewership he does. This is whey he puts waaaayyyy more emphasis on the flaws, but will briefly glass over the good parts. Its funny to brutally exagerate flaws and frustrations that gamers can agree with and relate

#102 to #2 - John Cena (10/25/2013) [-]
He's pretty open about when he thinks something is good (Portal being probably the best example, where he literally couldn't think of anything bad to say).

Of course, keep in mind, just because he spends the whole time complaining about things, doesn't mean those are what define the game. For example, he spent pretty much the entire review of Bioshock Infinite pointing out all the potential problems and logic hiccups, only to finish by saying "If it isn't boring and gives us something to talk about, then it can't be bad."
User avatar #104 to #2 - usernameisuser (10/25/2013) [-]
I was surprised when in his review for LittleBigPlanet all he said about the Story Levels was that they were "good".

And nothing else.

He likes Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 2, Killer 7, Minecraft, DAYZ and a few others. He does admit when he likes something, he's just really critical and nitpicks quite a bit.

You have to take all of Yahtzee's "reviews" with a grain of salt. Their not really reviews as much as they are roast sessions for most games. When he does have praise it's usually only in contrast to ******** games, and in the end his job is pretty much to point out as many flaws as he can find in as humorous a manner as possible. I've actually played Darksiders 2, beat it, enjoyed the game immensely, then watched Yahtzee's review and realized how much was wrong with the game. Doesn't mean I can't still enjoy it, though.

If you want a more positive, more balanced reviewer, I'd recommend checking out TotalBiscuit's "WTF is" series. Although he calls them "first impressions" and not actual reviews, because he acknowledges that he doesn't have enough time to go through the majority of every game he covers. He still covers the games in much more detail, both positives and negatives, than anything Yahtzee has ever done.

A comparison of Yahtzee's and TotalBiscuit's "reviews" on Darksiders 2:
DARKSIDERS 2 (Zero Punctuation)

It means the start of the game is **** , not the entire game.

Let's be honest though, he gave the gist of the game. Grind your ******* balls off, then just kill more stuff for the first time, then grind the rest of your balls of, repeat. Every Monster Hunter in a nutshell. Speaking as someone who loves the series.

If the start of the game is **** , it's a **** game. The start of the game should be the second best part, (after the ending, of course.) If a game doesn't suck you in from the beginning, it won't keep you. Because the sets the pace for everything else that will come. A **** beginning means the rest will be **** by default.

If directing a movie, animating a cartoon, and writing a book are all forms of art then I don't see why making a video game is not. Sure, there are inappropriate games that might be considered less "artistic" or "mature" but movies like dumb and dumber or the hangover are still considered art, so I don't see why video games as a whole can't be considered art. Technically hentai is art. It might not be respectable but it still technically under the art forms of drawing and animation.
