In Bioshock, you get powers by splicing your genes. You do this by injecting "Adam" into your body. Adam are stem cells from the sea slugs that are inside of characters called "little sisters". When Adam is injected into the body, it replaces normal cells and creates new cells that usually are not seen in the human body. When this happens it gives the person powers (such as telekineses or lightning bolts), but at the price of both cosmetic and mental damage. It acts like a drug because the person needs to take more and more over time so that they can remain mentally stable. I am gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you already know Swiper is a character who steals things in the children's show Dora the Explorer
