Legally, they do in a way.

Unless a cyclist swerves into the center of the road suddenly leaving no time to stop, the car is always at fault.

Goddamn pedestrians are even worse because they seem to forget that if you see a bike to get out the way like you would a car, unless that cyclist has had more than enough time to see you. And they truly own the road legally. ANY hitting of a pedestrian even if they throw themselves at the car is cause for a lengthy investigation and the argument that "you could have stopped" even if no, you really couldn't.

Not saying the attitude is right though, since it's a 1 ton metal contraption speeding along at 40 mph. It kind of wins when it comes to the road.

Cars can also be dicks.. I've nearly been hit five times over three summers by people coming out of Duncan donuts and mcdonalds places and not paying the **** attention.

Learned the hard way to ALWAYS go behind a car whenever possible except at a crosswalk (and even then) because even if the car is more than 30 feet away from you, you never can assume they'll stop. You'd think the threat of a lawsuit (not that I ever would sue unless someone was TRYING to mow me down, I document the invents in case they sue because I scratched the car only) would make people LOOK before they go to pull out..

This is why i hate cycling it usually ends up in a lose lose situation from my experience. Nobody wants you on the road but nobody wants you on the paths either and i just get treated like **** since some drivers put your life at risk to save an extra 5 seconds.

I cycle and drive, today I had a woman shout at her after I told her to watch my space since she barely overtook me just to left hook me. She said I was riding too close!!! Crahayzee
User avatar #122 to #36 - elcreepo (08/07/2014) [-]
I had one person scream at me once to watch where I was going when I crossed the road because he almost hit me

Thing is, he was doing 60 mph in a residential area where the speed limit is 35, max.

I also hate the riding too close thing... when there is no way to drive except in the road, like around where I live, the law SAYS you have to stop if you can't give at least a few feet's length away from the person.. but nobody ever does stop. It's terrifying and the knowledge that if I lose my balance I could die doesn't help.

I love cycling, since I can't afford a car, but I'm not willing to risk my damn life over it.

Sometimes cars are dicks man.

The other day I was on a main road at about 11 at night, and there was a cyclist going along the middle of the road in all black clothing with no lights on his bike, no reflectors, no helmet and was cycling one handed with his phone as a torch in front of him.

The lights on the car weren't that great, and if we hadn't seen the person in front swerving ahead and hence been looking out for something they would have been hit at 60mph right up the ass and would have died. No question.

Some people are just stupid. MFW

Actually, bikers are subject to specific laws and if they're hit violating them then they're at fault, not the driver. Which only makes sense, if you're going 60 miles an hour it's hard to suddenly dodge some asshat who thinks he doesn't have to follow laws.

When I drive, it sucks so bad to come face to face with a cyclist. I understand that it's a cheaper alternative, but It's so stressful to be around them. Most cyclists don't give a **** about anyone. They bike between cars and speed through red lights and yeah, a cyclist will get pummeled if a car hits them, but the person who hits them is screwed. Hitting a pedestrian is going to **** you over.
One time I was at an intersection, and when my light turned green, I went to the left. There was a cyclist who was on the intersecting road, and although his light was red, he decided to bike around all the other cars and just keep going. He ended up crashing into the side of my car. I have never screamed so loud in my life.
Now I ******* hate cyclists and I avoid them as much as I can.

I cycle to get around. I don't own a car. I use signals when I change lanes (which is more than can be said for a lot of drivers). I keep to the side of the road so I don't obstruct traffic. I stop at red lights when there's traffic. And I don't "demand the same rights as cars"...I just don't want to get run over.

But if there's a red light, and there's not a lot of traffic (I'll always check), and I'm rolling hard..... **** that red light. Unlike driving a car, it actually takes effort for a cyclist to stop and get back up to speed, especially on hills (pic relevant). On top of that, when I do stop at a red light, half the time I get honked at by the driver behind me for not getting up to speed quickly enough.

I dare any one of you to ride a bike around a city and NOT get fed up with that.

And bring on the red thumbs.

Cause you know what Ya'll need? BETTER ******* BIKE PATHS!!

Seriously - city design in the U.S. is S-H-I-T.

We spend how much money on insane **** ? We ship how much $$$ to the Federal Gov't so they can do God-Knows-What with it? **** that - how about a 'bike highway' through town? How about designing new city blocks with a Cars-Only, Bikes-and-Peds-Only 'layered' system? How about trying to align bike routes along the busier Interstates / State Routes so that people can reliably make a 5-10-mile commute on their bikes?

I've come to hate all this anti-bike rage. Bikes aren't the problem - ****** city design is.
User avatar #105 to #101 - allamericandude (08/07/2014) [-]
That's true. But the reason for that is that most Americans commute by car or public transport. There isn't as much demand for bikes as there is in, say, Europe or Asia or everywhere that isn't America.

Remember back in 2000 when we all laughed and laughed and laughed about Brits and their $5/gallon Gasoline?

Yeah - it's here. Bikes are rising in popularity rapidly - problem is, the average medium-sized infrastructure project in the U.S. takes ~30 years and 10x overbudget to create (only slightly joking), so nobody can effectively use the bikes we so crave
#111 to #108 - allamericandude (08/07/2014) [-]
Actually, it's mopeds (specifically the "VIP" mopeds) that are on the rise in the US, not bicycles. They get like 100 mpg, so every broke ************ is buying one. I'd never be caught dead on one. And frankly I think they deserve more hate than bikes. They're faster than bikes but too slow for cars. Despite that, they insist on driving in the middle of traffic, and they're constantly weaving between lanes (at least in my experience). I hate driving when they're around. They might work in the cities of Europe, but in America (specifically in the south where I live) they're just dangerous.

I think they're the one group that car drivers and bicyclists can both hate.

So I take it you've never gone over the speed limit. You've never used your phone while driving. You've never changed lanes without using your signals. You've never made a u-turn where there's a "no u-turn" sign.

I challenge you to get rid of any automobile you own and only commute on a bicycle. If you can go a week without crossing a red light out of frustration or laziness, I will concede defeat to everything you just said.

It'll never happen though since I live in the suburbs where most of the time unless you get a speedy asshole you're safe on the back roads. Unless you're like me living in a deadend street attached to a narrow main road with no sidewalks, that is.

We have bike lanes in some places here, but they're often obstructed without any kind of penalty, completely blocking them off, and bikers get penalized for straying from the lane at all. So most people just decide walking is the best course of action. Also, in a lot of places, it's far too hilly for a bike to be any use. Riding it half the time, carrying it with you the other half. It's a waste of time where I live. Own a bike, it's sitting in my garage waiting to be put together. I just walk.

It's not US who are not paying attention half the time.

Five times I've been hit by cars coming out of food joints. Each time, car had more than enough time to stop and I assumed they'd see me. Five times before I finally gave up on thinking a car won't hit me if it's thirty feet away and pulling out, so I now either stop or go behind the vehicle.

Because you ***** won't look up and see a cyclist before you make sure you have your order.

Most cyclists TRY to obey the law. Most of us stay on the side of the road if there is no sidewalk, and that's the only law we'll break. Around my area, there are NO paths we can take except the road.

But you assholes don't have the decency to give us the legal FIVE FEET of space we require in case we wipe out during those times we are forced to share a road. I've actually gotten pretty hurt having to dive from my bike because a ford wouldn't follow the law and STOP until it was safe for him to go onto the other side of the road to avoid me.

Because I'm nice, I won't sue for any injury unless you try to kill me. But there are others who would have sued the first time a car hit them pulling out of dunkin donuts.

I'm not saying all drivers are assholes, I'm saying drivers who assume cyclists are at fault when most times they aren't are assholes.

Ya know, for someone that has tried really hard to make a name for themselves and garner a reputation on this crappy site, I've seen you be a really vocal, ignorant asshole a number of times. Maybe you should ease up on being a cunt sometimes, or take your cunt-ness to a different account.

big brother admin and Phanact both did that too i noticed. It's wierd. They aren't cunts anymore, but they both had periods of being assholes.

The thing about fagmin and phanact is that people were still defending them while they were trolling.

They're both incredibly unintelligent so it makes sense that if nobody points out to them what assholes they are, they won't notice themselves.

I don't care about your opinion

And nobody cares about yours, shut the **** up faggot.

You shut the **** up faggot. Jokexplain is 20x better than sciencexplain but people like you will press the wrong colored thumb as illustrated in the OP.

What the heck is with the explains? Why do they all tend to be such huge assholes whenever they aren't explaining something?

You don't understand how much I enjoy seeing you stumble around so much you illiterate **** .

You're proving everything I assumed about you correct.

>gives **** to other people for giving their opinion as well
you're a special kind of retarded aren't you
#4 to #1 - pfccross (08/06/2014) [-]
sometimes yes you stupid **** . I've actually seen news reports of people who were driving on hilly roads when suddenly there is some retarded cyclist riding in the road and they have to quickly swerve to avoid hit and killing them, and end up either crashing off the side of the road, or into another car in the other lane. It is stupid and unsafe.
User avatar #2 to #1 - maybetraffy (08/06/2014) [-]
never seen a cyclist sit on a red light, they all ******* pass
and ofc you will die if you run into something bigger, but they harm pedestrians too

Only time I ignore a light is when I press the button to cross safely. And I walk my bike across because that's the law.

I wait on lights when it makes sense. only time I ever ignore a light is when I'm on the side of the road at a T intersection and I'm literally never going to be in anyone's way. As in I'm never actually on the road. if there were a sidewalk, there would be no crosswalk.
