Would you feel it'd be better to call them both a symbol of hope or an idol?

Half of Europe so to say. There were neutral states as well as those who fought and prevailed.

You may as well say he brought America and most of Europe out of a depression, too. The thing is, most of that was just a side effect, an accident. Wars tend to do that, and Hitler started the worst war in history.

although at the same time, he was foolish enough to believe he could conquer Europe through oppression and military strength, even though when the resulting order of things could in no way survive in the long-term, as the different cultures under repression would be in a constant state turmoil against the regime

Are you trying to imply that it was a bad idea to rally behind the man that pulled your country out of an economic depression that would be in history books for centuries and rebuilt it's military as one rivaling those of nations many times' it size?

Ever read Mein Kampf? All he does is spill his hate towards Jews throughout the whole book, and it was published on 1925. So yes maybe following a moron blinded by hate isn't such a good idea. Then again I suppose most people were just looking for an escape goat to blame all their problems on.

The problem here being that Hitler wasn't an idiot. He appealed to the German masses; Justin Beiber just appeals to young and dumb girls.

Actually, he made several fatal errors that definitely cost him the war, fortunately.

The bombings of Britain accomplished nothing other than drain large amounts of the Germans' resources, for example. He also failed to recognize that his alliance with Italy was a massive drain on resources; Mussolini invaded the Balkans and failed there, forcing Hitler to delay his invasion of the Soviet Union. This delay was just enough to cause winter to come along at the worst possible time for his armies during Operation Barbarossa.
Breaking his non-aggression pact with the Soviets is definitely the biggest mistake he made in the War, though. The amount of resources, both in terms of natural resources and manpower, crippled Germany's ability to fight off Operation Overlord, considering that fighting on two fronts is pretty much impossible when facing such large amounts of resistance.

He made quite a few other mistakes, but these examples should serve the purpose of showing that he was not quite a genius strategist. He was too idealistic and narrow-minded to realize that other people aren't pathetic compared to the Aryans--the Nazi ideology viewed Soviets as sub-humans and incapable of any significant resistance, and they ended up losing the war to them.

Sorry for the essay, but I get slightly irked when people say that Hitler was some sort of genius at waging war.

hitler was a terrible general but a good peoples person.

thou he did manage to snatch a win from stalin when he attacked russia(stalin himself acknowledged that hitler had won this round when he attacked soviet union) but this was only because stalin thought hitler to be a sensible logical person like he was(but it turned out hitler was a dreamer)

the bombing of britain wasnt that much his fault as the leader of luftwaffen promised he can destroy the resistance of great britanny if he was given time.

they have theorized that had hitler appointed someone else to run his army germanny would have won the second world war.

Actually, although Hitler was a dick, he wasn't an idiot. He did study quite a lot of psychology. The ones that were the idiots were the ones blindly following him. The rest were just dicks as well (those who agreed with him).

Wouldn't say the people were idiotic. They were in deep **** following all the economic and political turmoil after World War 1. Hitler seemed like a guy with balls that could get **** done and made a lot of promises. He was a strong leader and that's exactly what the people wanted. A crisis is the perfect opportunity for radical extremists to gain influence as they usually have very clear and driven perspectives/ideas, which makes them come off as determined and willing to act. So the people weren't idiotic, just very desperate. It's not like Hitler said he was going to start a war and kill a ******** of people either in his campaigns.

People are herd animals. There are leaders, and there are followers. Hitler simply knew how to lead.
