The Gambia (the Listeni/ˈɡæmbiə/; officially the Republic of the Gambia) is a country in West Africa. It is surrounded by Senegal, apart from a short strip of Atlantic coastline at its western end. It is the smallest country on mainland Africa.

The country is situated on either side of the Gambia River, the nation's namesake, which flows through the country's centre and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Its area is 10,689 square kilometres (4,127 sq mi) with a population of 1,882,450 at the 15 April 2013 Census (provisional). Banjul is the Gambian capital, but the largest cities are Serekunda and Brikama.

The Gambia shares historical roots with many other West African nations in the slave trade, which was the key factor in the placing and keeping of a colony on the Gambia River, first by the Portuguese and later by the British. On 18 February 1965, the Gambia gained independence from the United Kingdom and joined the Commonwealth of Nations, from which it withdrew in October 2013.[2] Since gaining independence, the Gambia has enjoyed relative political stability, with the exception of a brief period of military rule in 1994.[3][4]

Due to the fertile land of the country, the economy is dominated by farming, fishing, and tourism. About a third of the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.[5]

Main article: History of the Gambia

Arab traders provided the first written accounts of the Gambia area in the ninth and tenth centuries. During the tenth century, Muslim merchants and scholars established communities in several West African commercial centres. Both groups established trans-Saharan trade routes, leading to a large trade in slaves, gold, ivory (exports) and manufactured goods (imports).

Serer civilisation
The first picture is of the Senegambian stone circles (megaliths) which run from Senegal through the Gambia and which are described by UNESCO as "the largest concentration of stone circles seen anywhere in the world".

By the eleventh or twelfth century, the rulers of kingdoms such as Takrur (a monarchy centred on the Senegal River just to the north), ancient Ghana and Gao, had converted to Islam and had appointed Muslims who were literate in the Arabic language as courtiers.[6] At the beginning of the fourteenth century, most of what is today called Gambia was part of the Mali Empire.

"Enter Sandman's guitar solo was ******* fantastic"

Enter Sandman solo is instantly recognizable, indeed, but it really one of Kirk's weakest solos.

Trust me, I'm a pretty big Metallica fan and an amateur guitar player. Sandman solo is very easy to play, granted it's pretty fun to play it too - but solos like The Unforgiven one are on a whole other level. Not technically, mind you (Kirk really is a lousy guitar player) but the feel of the solos.
User avatar #200 to #178 - hopkinator (04/25/2014) [-]

User avatar #205 to #200 - tkfourtwoone ONLINE (04/25/2014) [-]
Implying he wrote anything other than the solo.

If anything half of Dyers Eve goes to Jason, if I remember correctly. You really think a guitar player like Kirk could come up with those kind of off-timed riffage? He's still so proud he came up with the "Die, die, die" riff from Creeping Death (yes, I know it's a very good riff, but simple as **** )

As for the Dyers Eve solo... well, I think that the Blackened solo is much more interesting and harder to pull off.
User avatar #209 to #205 - hopkinator (04/25/2014) [-]
oh no i was implying only the solo. yeah hes not the best at riffage, but thats what hetfield is there for.

Depends on the day. Let's just pick from the albums:

KEA - The Four Horsemen
RTL - Fight Fire With Fire
MOP - Orion & Leper Messiah share no. 1 spot. Orion though is just ******* brilliant
AJFA - Blackened. Definitely Blackened
S/T - Wherever I May Roam - Commercial and simple as **** , but it sounds really good. The oriental theme **** also sets apart from miles
Load - Until It Sleeps - Easily one of their hard rock (definitely not metal) masterpieces
ReLoad - Devil's Dance
St. Anger - The Unnamed Feeling
DM - All Nightmare Long. By far the best song on the album, along with My Apocalypse (which I always relate it to Dyers Eve, another AJFA masterpiece)

I agree. I like pretty much every kind of metal except for most black metal and really gay metalcore and deathcore (so not the early/first bands of those genres)
And yeah, I think metallica's good, also some of the later albums, but they definitely are overrated. There are just SO MANY bands out there who are just as good, or even far better.

But then again, opinions, ya know

If you want a real unpopular opinion, I prefer modern metalcore and post-hardcore bands. A bit like the old nu-metal of the late 90's and early 2000s, the metalcore and post-hardcore scene is 80% ********* and 20% ******* gold.

Depends on how you look at it.
When they started it was highly innovativ and new for their time, they are in comparison to other metal bands from today "overrated" as you said, but they still have decent albums like Metallica ( or the Black Album I don't care what you call it) and Master of Puppets (which are my favourite).
I just think their new albums suck except for a few songs.

I am to lazy to find a pic so I'm gonna roll one
User avatar #92 to #47 - whiplasher (04/25/2014) [-]
That's because their last 3 albums weren't good. St. Anger was decent, but not nearly as good as Ride the Lightning (my favorite).

They are more of a mainstream metalband than a "real" metalband
User avatar #142 to #47 - secondlawprevails (04/25/2014) [-]
I think that the reason so many people like metallica is that they are probably the most accessible of the old metal bands. They get a lot of airtime on radio and their more recent songs lack the intensity/controversial lyrics that is the hallmark of so many better metal bands. Therefore, even non metal heads can join in a discussion related to metallica and not feel clueless or out of place and that makes them feel good. I'm not saying metallica is a better band for any of this, I'm just saying it's why they are more popular.

I can respect that, I mean, if thats what they want to write its not like I have any reason to say their wrong. I just don't care for it. I've always been a fan of the more extreme end of metal, Death, Carcass, Immortal, stuff along those ends. I'm not really that into thrash, though Slayer's Seasons In the Abyss will always be a great album.
#190 to #184 - jubajubejiblets (04/25/2014) [-]
Symbolic is one of my all-time favorite records dude, and Surgical Steel is easily my favorite album of last year. I've dug the stuff i've dabbled in with Immortal to give them a real shot, but I can't decide which album to start with. As far as black metal goes, Tvangeste's Damnation Of Regiomontum impressed me quite a bit a while back. I honestly can't listen to Testament or most thrash bands much, but certain songs are great.
User avatar #193 to #190 - isaapostasied (04/25/2014) [-]
Hell yeah man, I always love finding people with good taste on here haha. Symbolic is also my favorite Death album. As far as Immortal goes, I would say start with At the Heart of Winter and Sons of Northern Darkness. They are somewhat later in their career but its at the point where the production has cleaned up enough to really let the songwriting shine through. Man do they have some tasty riffs. Sons of Northern Darkness was the first metal cd I ever owned along with Mastodon's Leviathan. My favorite band is Opeth though, all the proggy goodness you could want and still heavy as balls haha
#214 to #193 - jubajubejiblets (04/25/2014) [-]
Yeah, I get the appeal of the "kvlt" basement-tape level production, but I much prefer high production value in my metal, so I should probably dig that. I freaking love Opeth too, Still Life is amazing for their transitions from heavy to soft parts. Just totally seemless. It doesn't hurt that Mikael Ankerfeldt is one of the best vocalists in metal too.
