Once, when I was in eight grade, we had a test - and I wrote 8 pages. Was very proud of how I performed on that test. Was kind of disappointed when we got the test back a couple of weeks later, and the teacher hadn't graded my test because he was unable to read it. Although, tbh sometimes I can't even understand it myself.

Same here, except, a lot of the times not even me OR the teachers can read my handwriting, it's that bad

Took a highschool course in history where we were forced to take notes on every page we read and do a quiz every day with a test every week. A 5 paragraph paper was expected every two weeks and you had to have at least a dozen sources from special online sites you had to access with pay codes a lot of the time. Missing one class was worth a automatic zero and a letter grade off of your test. Our teacher told us she worked closely with the professors at a nearby university and that they demanded higher work than that.
When i went to that university class, for the highest level history class available i got. The professor told me personally that i never had to go to class and that there would only be 4 tests all semester with no hw or quizzes. The tests needed only 3 sources and wikipedia counted as a source. I aced the class and ended up going to the highschool to help other kids study. The teacher told me she did all that just so we would be ahead.
Mfw i lost all the sleep and stressed so much to just get a little edge

I have some counter-arguments.

*Write cursive; rapid note taking.
Answer; Use a netbook and type notes 6x faster than cursive.

*Learn algebra;
Answer; Unless you are going for an engineering degree, you will never hear the word 'polynomial'.

*Learn vocabulary words; Answer; if the user has no purpose for the obscure words, and the listener cannot understand what is being said, then the user will just look like a douchebag throwing unnecessarily advanced words for the sake of sounding smart.(Your move, hipsters).

*Learn Spelling;
Answer; learn ******* spelling. I don't want to see another 'your' in my life unless it is spelled correctly.

*Learn poetry;

"In the filthy streets,

I'd say that algebra is better than the basics of math. We have calculators for the basics, but algebra is about understanding math and logic, and dammit, logic is a nice thing to have.

Also, that spelling thing is grammar, but I agree. And a haiku has a 5-7-5 structure, not a 5-6-5. And having an extensive vocabulary makes communication faster provided that everyone has extensive vocabularies. What sucks is the attitude of teachers to motivate kids, as well as teaching methods. I'm sorry about the excessive nitpicking good sir, I'm very tired today.

Yah, I'm planning on a CS major, so a lot of the classes necessary currently I don't really need.

Luckly school systems are starting to realize this, such as now CS is a foreign language credit in Texas (After I took 2 years of French of course).

Also many of the courses are more centered around career prep. rather than pushing everything on students.

Now in high school everyone complains how they can't write in print for their exam essays.

I ****** hate cursive. When I was in H.S. it was still mandatory to use cursive for almost everything. I can't remember any time in my adult life outside of school that I've seen cursive.
#74 - dustypengwin (04/01/2014) [-]
I could never figure out how to write cursive and it pissed me off that I've never used it since "writing class" in fifth grade. When I asked why we needed to learn it, they told me "because it's faster and it's all you are allowed to use in high school." Bitch, that **** gave me hand cramps and it took my a ******* year to write one sentence.
Now my hand writing is some weird combination of print and cursive, with my letters resembling print but my pencil only occasionally leaving the page. Unless I slow down, then it looks pretty neat.

Where I'm from everybody writes in cursive, or a mix between cursive and print, since the cursive capital letters look like fancy worms contortionists, except for teachers with a very bad handwriting, but they would give up sooner or later.
You could cook an entire traditional Russian Christmas meal for twelve people before I could write a simple sentence in print.

People that waltz into college expecting it to be like that are in for a big surprise. I know, I was one of them.

Expect to work. Expect to work a lot. Notice I'm not saying it's particularly difficult although depends on your degree, some of these projects have been borderline insane but you will need to work at it. Constantly, thoroughly, and with little to no rest in between.
