It's really not all that commonly used though, you learn about it in school, but only some physicists, mathematicians, and electrical engineers actually use it.

But it's used ALL THE TIME in those fields. Transmission lines, capacitors, inductors, any sort of filter ( like in headphones, speakers, etc.) all use i. Modern electronics wouldn't really exist if we didn't know about it.
