I'm a Brony, but I actually signed the first petition. No matter what the actual definition of the word "derp" is, the connotation that goes along with it IS stupidity or retardation. I tried to see it your way, but being on the Internet as long as I have I find it hard to believe that any internet frequenter sees the word "Derpy" and doesn't think of stupidity or retardation.. Not only did they not need to call her "Derpy", they didn't even need to make her canonical in the show: In the end it's just pointlessly offensive fan service. I think that not only should they take her out of the show and apologize, I think they should also stop pandering so much to the Brony audience. Season two so far has been extremely disappointing due to unrelenting fan service.

By that logic we could ban hundreds of anime and cartoons around the world for being 'offensive' like Dragonball Z which can promote violence to children who watches the show. Or pokémon who says it's ok to let animals fight against each other for glory. How about South Park for it's constant swearing and cursing. Or the Simpsons that may give children the idea it's ok to strangle others and don't get punished for it. Every famous anime or cartoon out there has something offensive in it. So stop whining and live with it. Cause it's not going to change.
Note: I do not agree with these views, but some are feeling this way and it's just as much ******** as Derpy is offensive.

I'm actually not a troll, I just think they're doing something ethically dubious for the sake of views. Believe what you want, but I am 100% Brony. I will happily concede, however, that I have next to nothing in common with people such as yourselves outside of that common interest. The fact that the part of your community of "love and tolerance" that I'm seeing here would suppress my opinions by 'hiding' them (which I presented respectfully at first, by the way) and then try to make it seem right to yourselves by labeling me as a 'troll' honestly just makes me sad. I've moved past irritation by now. I just hope for humanity's sake that you wouldn't behave this way in a big group scenario outside of the Internet.
Another interesting thing you decided by my one post was that I can't possibly be a Brony because I disagree with you about one aspect of the show. I don't know about you, but I happen to think that diverse opinions are a beautiful and neccessary part of the human experience. I'm just thankful that the hateful, ignorant, and downright wrong people I've talked with in this thread will probably never hold positions of power. They have a word for people that operate like this in the political world, you know: They're called fascists.
I can honestly understand why some people dislike all fabulous fillies now, though I still don't agree with them; people that act this immaturely can make us all look bad.
Hopefully you can read this with an open mind and not be offended, as I'm not aiming to offend. I just hope that you can see that you were a bit quick to judge me as a liar and a troll.

your probably a troll but whatever. First like many other people said Derpy isn't the first challanged cartoon character in a tv show and even in this show. There is Timmy in south park, Ed in Ed edd eddy, cheese in foster's home, Ralph in the simpsons, Patrick in spongebob and Snails in MLP Fim and I can go on even more. So it isnt a bad thing to have a slow character. And Derpy you can't really classify as mentally deficient really just because she is clumsy and has a very unique voice. Also Derp I always view as a funny cross eyed face. I known plenty of challanged people and they don't have eyes like in the derp pictures. So that why I love Derpy's character the way she is. And to season 2 apparently sucking because of fan service I completely disagree. Wasn't really much fan service in the episode this morning, wasn't much in the Cider episode, and I didn't really see much in Cake twins episode. I have seen it here and there but not enough where it detracks from the show. I view season 2 as very entertaining.

Ah, by the way, I can give you an example of fan service during Season 2 thus far.
1: Forcing songs into places they clearly don't belong.
The songs they made for season one actually transitioned smoothly in and out in order to give a lot of information in a relatively short amount of time; this is an age old method in TV shows and movies, perfectly fine. In Season 2, after being pressured by the community, they are trying to release songs as much as possible. That would be fine, but they don't actually progress the story or make sense time wise in the episode.
For example:
The song in the Cider episode gave you almost no information despite the fact that a) they were brothers, and b) they sold cider. The song took almost four ******* minutes of airtime. In my eyes, that's pretty obvious fan servicing.

i think flim and flams song is ******* brilliant. the voices and the music just go so damn well together. and it didnt fit in? how? they were advertising their super speedy cider squeezy 6000! did you see how everypony reacted to the song anyway? they were drolling and they even joined in!

Derpy is absolutely the first of her kind. She's in a ******* kids show directed at young girls. I have absolutely no respect left for the Brony community in general after what's been going on recently. Sure, you could argue that little girls shouldn't care because they dont understand the joke, but that logic is twisted and sick. They shouldn't be subjected to predispositions of thinking of the mentally challenged as "funny" at that age. Also, you guys preach love and tolerance yet toenail clipping down anyone who expresses an opinion other than your own. God, the fabulous fillies on this site are absolutely demented. Absolute sheep in search of a shepherd.

And girls can't watch spongebob? And toenail clippings down? Really? You're crying over a virtual currency you can't even spend? I'm glad you're not a brony, you represent the worst kind of sheep. One who claims he is free, yet is a slave to peer-pressure.

And so what if the show gives the majority of what audience wants? How is it bad for a show to say "people like this, let's keep doing it". Would you rather have them say "People like the songs, let's stop?"
New information? What new info did you get from suited for successes song? From the best night ever? Everyone of those points was pointed out previously?

Get off your damn high horse, judging others yet complaining when they judge you.

I'll break my response into two replies for easier reading:
1 I don't mind toenail clippings down as a currency, but rather what it represents here. At a certain point of negativity a comment becomes hidden. The way I've been viewing this experience is as a representation of how you'd act in the real world, given a mask of anonymity. Suppressing my opinion and then claiming that I'm not a part of the community anymore due to the fact that I disagree with the majority of you on a minor issue would really be quite the damning measure of a man outside of the Internet. As I mentioned above, it's called fascism, and it's considered evil and archaic in regions where it's not used. Good examples of this would be the way China and North Korea have been known to imprison political opponents or journalists with unsavory reports about their countries. Please note, however, that I don't mean to imply that I'm the same as those people; clearly they had nobler causes and intentions, and had a far worse suppression.
2 "The Art of the Dress" (Suited for Success song) told the audience quickly and effectively that Rarity's motivation for this was a concern about satisfying her friends with their dresses, and also provided a major timelapse from the beginning of the dress making process to post production. Doing all of this normally would have taken twice as long.
"Best Night Ever" went into more depth about each character's motivation for wanting a ticket, as well as reminding the audience about the original motivation (It's been awhile since it was last mentioned.)
Young girls can watch Spongebob. They can also watch South Park.
The question is whether or not they should, and since parents can't watch every show, the rule of toenail clipping is for young girls to watch shows directed at young girls. If they realized that this show was now influenced by an adult male fandom, they might not have wanted their kid to watch it.
Hope this helps you see my reasoning.

first i didn't toenail clipping you down. second it doesn't matter whether it is a girl, boy, or unisex kid show. it isn't right to throw out a character because of mental ability. I was taught from a young age were all people, in this case ponies and it isnt right to pretend that these people dont exist and not put them into tv as fun loving characters. I understand some people get offended but people can be offended by anything so I'm sorry you feel offended by Derpy and i doubt she is a first of her kind
User avatar #30 to #8 - augginator (02/05/2012) [-]
First off, I'd like to say that I'm sorry I offended you with my earlier post. I'm very passionate about the issue of misrepresentation of the mentally challenged in television; I definitely lost my cool and said things I shouldn't have in several of my earlier posts.
Now that that's out of the way, I completely agree with your latest response, and I think your heart's in the right place. However, I think faulty logic has led you to the wrong conclusion.
I never meant to imply that Derpy should be thrown out because she's mentally challenged; in fact, my argument couldn't be further from that. I think Derpy needs to be thrown out because she, assuming she represents them, is completely detrimental to the mentally challenged.
Think about her role in the show so far: Rather than give her a complex personality like the normal ponies, the writers made her into nothing more than a slapstick comedy act. If they had done the former, I would absolutely celebrate a mentally challenged character on a kid's show.
I think that what people don't realize here is that the show should always be, at base, a kid's show. While you and I have high enough cognitive skills to realize what they were trying to get across, a six year old girl will just see a pony called Derpy hurting itself to be funny; the writers must keep this in mind. When they wrote Derpy's scene, I think they sent the opposite of their intended message: Her role as a "Three Stooges" type character is a step backward in tolerance, not forward.
This wouldn't be the first time that's happened, by the way. Episode 15 of season 1 was meant to be a lesson in religious tolerance, but came across to many as a preachy advertisement for religion. If they do here what Lauren Faust did with that episode, and admit that the message didn't come across as they had intended, I'll be perfectly fine with it. However, until then, I need to make them aware of my concerns. The petition was one of the ways I did so.

ok i'm glad that you want to debate calmly and everything. First she is a back ground character so it isn't like they could give her as complex a role as the mane six or zecora cherilee and so on. Second i've been watching a bunch of what is considered kids shows recently and found that there is alot of subjects in any kidshow that can easily be consider out of the range of comprehension for children. also the whole pinky sense episode is basically can be up to determination by the viewer about believing things that are hard to explain such as religon or the fact i cant study right until I make sure everything is just right.. I'd be the first to admit her scene in the last round up could have been done better. However i love the character derpy she has her flaws and has her charm that i cant help love. She is always trying to help in the episodes that she is a background character and something just happens to go wrong. And in her talking scene she is trying to help out but somethings are just going wrong. Also Derpy is a character with all the content from the bronie community i have gain another connection that while derpy is depicted to have problems we wouldnt want to have her any otherway. Sorry with being so long winded but when you talk about one of my favorite characters ill write essay, speaches and articles defending derpy. Anyway it is great that you express your opinion which differs from mine. Sorry for any big spelling or gramatical errors had a crazy time at friends place tonight.
