I'd like my fellow americans to get this. and stop caring more about Xbox One than the fact that the NSA has literally every email, text message, and phone call

and stop caring more about Xbox One than the fact that the NSA has literally every email, text message, and phone call you have sent in the past 7 years.

The mission of the law is not to oppress persons
and plunder them of their property, even though
the law may be acting in a philanthropic spirit.
Its purpose is to protect persons and property.
If you exceed this proper limit - if you attempt to
make the law religious, fraternal, equalizing,
philanthropic, industrial, or artistic - you will
then be lost in uncharted territory, in ‘vagueness
and uncertainty, in a forced utopia or, even
worse, in a multitude of utopias, each striving to
seize the law and impose it on you."

The only law is natural law, and it can and should exist without a state.

Funny though that the NSA claims that they do what they do to protect persons and property. They make no claims of being religious, fraternal, equalizing, philantropic, industrial or artistic. So the image does not match the description. Frederic Bastiat possibly would have approved of the NSA.

first sentence, where the law is oppressing people and plundering their property, is what the NSA is doing under the guise of protection.

You really managed to misunderstand that statement completely. His statement was directed against states that redistribute wealth from rich to poor people. That's all.

The NSA does not "plunder" anyone's property. You're confusing the IRS (which Bastiat would be complaining about nowadays) and the NSA. Also, even though the NSA might violate some of your basic rights by spying on you, they are not oppressing you in the way that Bastiat understood it. Once again, read the whole statement, he clearly gave the state the mandate to protect persons and property, and that is what the NSA claims to be doing.

Bastiat was not complaining about spies, soldiers, police. He was complaining about taxes and redistribution of wealth and that is what he saw as "oppression".

Your emails are your property, and they are being plundered. it's a violation of the 4th amendment, which details the protection of your private property from seizure by the government. I know the overall context was directed at other ideas, but the statement itself can work pretty easily for what the NSA is doing
