I had a friend, who in middle school, refused to believe me when I told him that there was only one masterball in the game.

"Dude. You totally wasted your masterball when you could've used it on something harder to catch."
"So? I can just get another one."
"No. There's only one masterball in the game."
"No, there has to be more."
"But there isn't."
"See, I just don't believe that."
"Why?"
"Because there should be more than one masterball in the game."
"But there isn't."

I even had multiple other friends who played pokemon tell him that he was wrong and he still didn't believe us. I know it sounds like he could easily be messing with us, but trust me. He's stupid enough to have been serious.

Back when I was playing Pokemon for the first time (Leaf Green master race), I was pretty young. I eventually checked back in after a while, and decided to try and find out what happened to my master ball. After at least half an hour of searching, I finally found it. Apparently when I was much younger, I had used it on a Slopoke. To this day I still have no idea why.

Another notable thing in that run was catching Mewtwo with a regular pokeball. I swelled with pride, and tout it as a great accomplishment to this day.

Ha, ******* casuals.
I had pokemon gold, and there was this glitch you could use to copy your pokemon.
(sending it to your PC, and turn off power while saving or something)
Equip pokemon with masterball -> infinite masterballs.
also works with rare candy, etc.
User avatar #101 to #98 - Sethorein ONLINE (10/26/2013) [-]
That was pretty close. You put a pokemon in one of your pc boxes with an item, then switch pc boxes to an empty one. Then when it saves you turn off the power and you'll have cloned pokemon in the new pc

There was a similar glitch in emerald, but if you had a regular DS that could play both GB: advance games and DS games, then you could take games from your emerald, ruby, and saphire and put them one your pearl game and so i cloned my pokemon and masterballs in emerald and then transferred them over.
#145 to #132 - timetostopposting (10/26/2013) [-]
I did the same, had a bunch of mewtwos, legendary birds, and 3rd generation legendaries cloned and transferred to my pearl (with rare candies and master balls and whatnot).
It only worked in the computer of the "Battle Tower" (I think) You just saved the game, moved one Pokémon to a different position (be it in your PC, or from your party to your PC) and save it again, wait about 3 seconds and turn it off.
When you start it back on, you'll fined the Pokémon in both places with their respective items doubled.

Ill explain this again, IN THE POKEMON WORLD A LEGENDARY IS ******* HARD TO FIND, to be honest, nobody has ever seen mew, mewtwo, articuno etc, so a hard pokemon isn't a legendary, is something strong, like a fearow or a tentacruel.

OK so I got Y after not playing for 10 years (last played Crystal). I intend on going back through the gens. But wondered if I could have some help with shinies?

What gen did they start? How do you tell when the pokémon is a shiny (I haven't seen a lot of the new pokémon so I have no idea if it's regular or not)? What's the chance of it appearing?

Really excited to be back. The whole breeding thing seems super hardcore to get those high stats etc. so taking it slow. Just trying to play the game!

Well I started breeding to get one with max IV's in Attack, Speed and HP and after about 60 eggs I thought I'd just keep going 'til I get a shiny! I've actually had to release some and I've given away around 200 on the Wonder Trade D: I'm a bit busy at the moment but if you have any questions at all I'll get back to you as soon as I can!

Yes it does. Once a shiny... always a shiny.
#40 to #36 - masarua (10/26/2013) [-]
It started in gen 2.
When a Shiny Pokémon appears in the wild, or from a Trainer's Poké Ball, stars will surround it and make a pinging sound effect. In Generation II, this ping happens before the Pokémon's cry, while from Generation III onward, it occurs afterward.
#41 to #40 - kisushima (10/26/2013) [-]
Thanks man. I played both Gold and Crystal (for hundreds of hours) and don't recall seeing a shiny - but then again I never knew about them. Weird. Did Red Gyarados count..?
#42 to #41 - masarua (10/26/2013) [-]
Shiny pokemon (as far as I know) have a chance of 1 in 8192 of spawning.

Red Gyarados is in fact a shiny, but everyone considers this as one of the most worthless shinies because everyone and their mother has one.
#44 to #42 - kisushima (10/26/2013) [-]
Thanks so much for your help. Mind if I add you? I'm really trying to get back in to pokémon and every so often I just can't find an answer to a question.

Oi, I've been playing for the last 14 years.
You need anything, just ask.
EV's, IV's, Chaining, Egg moves, I know my **** .
#49 to #48 - kisushima (10/26/2013) [-]
Adding you to! Thanks so much. Mind explaining what all you just said was in a line ? The egg thing in particular. Like so far I think I know you need a male and female of say a pikachu. Does that make a pichu or a pikachu from the egg? Also you can have a ditto and the pokemon right?
User avatar #53 to #49 - luxray (10/26/2013) [-]
Wow.
Okay you're way out of it.
Egg simply need a male and female (or anything and a ditto) that are in compatible erg groups. Like ponyta and say Eevee can breed because they are in the field egg group.
The baby will be whatever species the female is.

Now, some pokemon have the ability to learn special moves from their father that they couldn't learn any other way. Such as shellder. Shellder can learn rock blast, but only if its father knows it. To learn a move in this way, the father must know it and the child must be able to learn it this way.

Now, onto baby pokemon, two pikachu will produce a pichu, every time (and if one holds an item called a light ball the pichu will know volt tackle).
Clefairy will make cleffa, and Jigglypuff igglybuff.
Some pokemon like budew, wynaut, and munchlax (roselia, came out in gen III, budew in IV) (Wobbuffet), (and snorlax, respectively) need the parent to hold a certain incense in the daycare, or the will produce themselves.

EV's and IV's are similar, they stand for Effort Values, and Individual Values.
EV's are earned by figting other pokemon, and raise stats by one point for every four EV's in the stat. A pokemon can have 510 EV's, and 255 in one stat. The number of EV's a pokemon gives out is equal to it's evolutionary stage (magikarp one, Gyrados 2.) and are usually in a stat in which the pokemon has great skill.
IV's are unique to every individual pokemon, and work like EV's except you can't train them, they have them from birth, and they range from 0-31.
#54 to #53 - kisushima (10/26/2013) [-]
Jesus I am. Will have to look at compatible egg groups.

Thanks for all that help. So you can make a pokémon that otherwise wouldn't be able to learn a move, learn it through the father linked breeding? Or is it a case of that TM doesn't exist so it's a way to pass it on?

Makes sense - I really need to start learning all of it. Not gonna lie, it's exciting having this massive world being reintroduced!
User avatar #56 to #54 - luxray (10/26/2013) [-]
Little of both, some egg moves TM's that the pokemon cn't normally learn, others you have to breed onto one pokemon, and breed onto another to breed it onto the one you want.

That's so cool. Heh bulbapedia - I've had like 10 tabs open all morning deciding which base moves to have for my pikachu and then which I might give in terms of TM etc. Also, I've seen mentioned the idea you can have a pokemon with like 2 or 3 of the HMs for simplicity when travelling to save moves on fighting pokémon? Is this a possible thing?

Last message before I bugger off. I'm playing through Y now. Got my fist badge and just caught Snorlax. Do you think I should just play through the game, do whatever? Ideally I want to have every pokemon I can get in Y (max evolved so not both a pikachu and a raichu, just a raichu) to max level. Is it still possible with planning and trading?

P.S. When my pikachu evolves in to a raichu, the pokedex shows I own both because it evolved. However not a pichu (quite rightly). If I was to get a pichu then release it, would the pokedex still show that I had owned it or does that disappear?
User avatar #58 to #57 - luxray (10/26/2013) [-]
If you release a pokemon it does show in the pokedex. Also it s possible to have an HM slave as it's called, alms always bidoof as the only one it cannot learn is waterfall, also you get a lapras in game, and surfing on it actually shows up as a lapras.
As for pikachu movesets, breed it from a pichu so it can learn nasty plot, then thunder, Volt switch, and I personally go with double team.
Honedge is a great new pokemon, and azumarril is very formidable with the new fairy type.
#59 to #58 - kisushima (10/26/2013) [-]
Thanks man, really helpful. But.. my faithful pikachu.. I think I may just play through once then replay it with a full pokedex in mine. The whole non attacking moves like double team etc., which ones do I keep and what are useless?
