They're supposedly using some new animation technique/tool/program. But, after rewatching sun/moon since episode one, it seems they're only using it well for important battles and a couple of scenes from the first 6 or so episodes. The animation is still as "stiff" as the previous season, so any justification for Ash's new design is bs

At least the Ash in the upcoming movie looks normal

It doesn't need a justification beyond the fact that the art style changed.

Ash is drawn the same way as all of the other characters.

If he has the night form of lycanroc as well as an umbreon, they're clearly setting up a day/night parallel with gladion and ash. Therefore his lycanroc will be day form.
