>People want a 3D, main series pokemon game.
>Complain when they finally get one.

Because who needs logic RIGHT?!

I'm happy and sad about it. On one hand i've wanted this since i was a kid. But it means losing the art style of the previous games. Something that i grew up with and always loved.

Doesn't have to be the same people whining about the quality of the game itself that is whining about the portability of the console.
#345 to #268 - anon (03/11/2013) [-]
The difference is that we wanted it on the console (which would have amazing graphics, think pokemon battle revolution) and wanted it to be an rpg (like the console games, where there were shadow pokemon).

PSP.
Look at the graphics. Making stuff smaller is no excuse for graphics.

I can only think of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and be in the mines and have a fire trap on you
and you have to blow on the screen.
So you get all these weird ass stares as you're blowing on your DS

What about N64 emulators?
User avatar #18 - Blargosnarf (03/11/2013) [-]
Riiiiight, because the N64 wasn't a console that wasn't designed to fit in your pocket and be playable anywhere with it's own screen that also utilizes eye trickery to make it appear to have depth.
#20 to #18 - therobsorensen (03/11/2013) [-]
Can't really make that argument since PS Vita exists and is light years ahead of 3DS graphically.
User avatar #24 to #20 - xxgmanxx (03/11/2013) [-]
And the Vita has been selling horribly since launch.
User avatar #28 to #24 - sirbrentcoe (03/11/2013) [-]
because it costs as much as a console.
User avatar #45 to #28 - xxgmanxx (03/11/2013) [-]
No not because it costs as much as a console it is selling bad because it has no games on it. Why buy a console/handheld if it has no games on it? It may be as powerful as the sun itself but if it has no reason to want to buy it other than the specs it will sell horribly.
User avatar #47 to #45 - sirbrentcoe (03/11/2013) [-]
same reason I bought a PSP: I'm a slave to trends. no, just kidding. I like the psone classics you can put on it. also video and audio quality are outstanding.
#38 to #20 - meowthenin (03/11/2013) [-]
1) Light years is a measure of time. You wouldn't say "The PS Vita is miles ahead of the 3DS." It sounds silly. You use measures of time for analogies like that as in "The PS Vita is years ahead of the 3DS graphically because it would take years for the 3DS to advance enough to match the Vita.""

2) And the PSP was graphically superior to the DS. But the DS sold better. Why? Games. Vita has how many games? And how may of those are just crappy ports of PS3 games? 3DS had a slow start but it quickly getting killer titles like Fire Emblem.
#106 to #38 - stopsdropsand (03/11/2013) [-]
umm.......Light-years are a measure of distance. Just under 10 trillion kilometers.
#445 to #106 - meowthenin (03/11/2013) [-]
Dude, re-read what I said. I know light years measure length.
#450 to #445 - stopsdropsand (03/12/2013) [-]
Well you must have confused yourself because your first sentence literally says Light-years is a measure of time
#454 to #450 - meowthenin (03/12/2013) [-]
Read the rest of the post moron. It's called a typo.
#41 to #38 - therobsorensen (03/11/2013) [-]
"Light years ahead" is a common term when talking about technology. I didn't just pull it out of my ass.

And I'm not talking about sales or games. I completely agree. DS has better games, BUT I'm saying in the 20 or so years between Nintendo 64/ PS 1, and the current hand held consoles, Sony has made bigger strides than Nintendo.
#43 to #41 - meowthenin (03/11/2013) [-]
1) No. It's not.

2) Not bigger, different. Nintendo gave up on the way Microsoft and Sony viewed games. They innovate. Motion controls. A handheld with two screens. Glasses-free 3D. A touch screen on the controller. Sure, it's kinda gimmicky but it does work. You won't say "Oh hey, that Mario game looks so beautiful and vibrant! It's almost life-like!" but it plays damn well. Measuring bigger strides by how much RAM or the processor or GPU in a console means nothing. Nintendo takes gaming further by showing new way to play it.

#39 to #29 - therobsorensen (03/11/2013) [-]
Ok that's fair, but if Sony went from PS1 to PS Vita, which has like PS3 graphics and is smaller, then Nintendo should still be able to step their game up.

#264 to #261 - retrochris (03/11/2013) [-]
all I'm saying is, that back then you were pretty limited on what yu could do with the graphics. Of COUSE there were some games that managed to realize the full potential. Still I'm in love with the old games for their high value in gameplay. I'm retro, it's in my name, it's running through my veins.
User avatar #267 to #264 - tylosaurus (03/11/2013) [-]
Yeah, but you can't deny all new games from being addicting and having great gameplay. Just hoping that you're not a retro-freak that denies everything that is new from being good. Good graphics + good gameplay beats good gameplay with worse graphics. I totally agree that you shouldn't use graphics as a decisive factor for whether the game is good or not.

Star ocean : till the end of time. The graphics for the time were awesome and the cutscenes were incredible. The fighting was incrediblely fun to play, but it looked good. If it didnt look good it would just get boring even though it was unique Diverse and challenging.

Well worth owning the system Oh and the 3DS market has some GOG's on it as well.

I personally think that they just took the art style a different direction and that why it is noticeably much better. Its leaning further toward wind waker type graphics while back in the day they were pushing for realism.

Despite what other say, i find it kind of impressive they were able to essentially shrink down the N64 which was that big back then because it had to be. That being said I still wouldn't buy one and think its ridiculous they are still making the same games since then.

User avatar #364 to #361 - AresX (03/11/2013) [-]
Well, the 3ds is 2 gens back, where-as the psvita is only one. I do understand what you're saying though. Nano-tech is a bit harder to develop than regular parts so it makes sense.
#370 to #364 - Hightower (03/11/2013) [-]
Maybe if you're comparing Nintendo to Sony, but the 3ds matches or beats the 2 gen old Nintendo console, Gamecube, which is only 2 gen old at this point because of the Wii U.
User avatar #373 to #370 - AresX (03/11/2013) [-]

Somewhat good point OP is making here but the battle scenes shown in the trailer look like something a N64 could never do.

- That image is much better than the quality of games on the n64.
-That image is very much dated as the game was only set to release almost a year later.
-Its on a portable system, of course the graphics won't be as good.
-The main part of the game, the battles look great.
-Taking the above point into consideration, there are 700-800+ 3d models of pokemon and trainer, plus forms and variants. ON A HANDHELD.

That image used has to aa done to it whatsoever, which would only take a a mere proportion of their time to, that will easily improve the aesthetics of the game.

And must I repeat the fact the battle scenes are much higher quality to the overworld, and with that in mind, there are 700-800 3d pokemon models, plus trainers, forms, and gender variants, which for a handheld is pretty impressive.

Also, move data, pokemon data, maps, dialog, overworld, character models and so on. 3ds games with much higher graphics than this have much less space being used up by models. there is only so much a handheld can do my friend.

problem is it's an RPG with hundreds of detailed 3d models that are using up the memory space on the game cartridge. The game is already using an extra-large file size cart as it is, if the out-of-combat graphics were as advanced the cart would have to be three times the size, which is possible but would make the game was more expensive to create and probably cost like $120

a normal 3ds cart is only 2 gigs of data though. They CAN go up to 8gb, but have yet to do so to my knowledge.
The important things aren't the file sizes, but game freak's time investment and design choices. Clearly they want to keep the overworld in a symbolic, recognisible style that evokes previous games. I don't necessarily agree with this design choice, but it's not my choice. (I wish they'd give us full analogue movement already though, it worked fine in Colosseum/XD)

It so doesnt. uncharted looks significantly worse than 2 and 3 on the ps3. and it runs in sub native resolution. that pissed me off. yaaay 960x544 screen. and then half the games run in like 720x480. and thus have blury aliasing.. :( All i want is an Awesome GTA game on my vita. that actually looks really good too. i dont mind them scaling the graphics back a little to make it run in the right resolution either. thats what the gorgeous screen is for right?
