I thought Pokemon Red and Blues internal batteries were all dead by now?

Internal batteries? I booted up Red on my original 1989 Game Boy recently, works fine.

You can open the game and replace the battery.

I know that you can do that, but I know it will erase the memory. I just started a new game a few months ago, it's a copy I got from a used game shop, and I don't want it to get deleted. I'm pretty sure that there is a way for me to do it without clearing the memory, I just don't remember it. Anybody know how?
